Re:Ask HN: Why do I have to call for cancellation? on Friday September 16, 2022 @08:06AM (#32864983)
Sounds like you live in Germany;)
It happens to me as well. All the time. My explanation is that the brain feels rewarded when discovering a new interesting article. And in the age of information the addiction is so high, that when you get back to old articles, the brain does not get the high, so instead it seeks its dose back to the front page of HN. And this goes on and on. We are the mice on the information treadmill.

Another good addition would be the phrase "to open a can of worms"
It really gets me that Mozilla has adopted this political / activist marketing style. It feels so fake.
I'm surprised that everyone here thinks that Kaspersky makes only antivirus products. They have a ton of security products, including their own microkernel-based OS: https://os.kaspersky.com/technologies/microkernel/

Ask HN: How do you protect your emergency fund from inflation?

So far inflation in Europe has risen to 5%, and many think that it will raise even more. Naturally, the question comes on how to protect any savings that are not being intended for investing, but rather for a rainy day, from inflation. Banks (at least in EU) offer a much smaller interest rate for locking funds for a predetermined amount of time. What are the alternatives?

Re:Ask HN: How do I get over constant failure? on Sunday January 09, 2022 @11:05AM (#29864427)
After a couple of decades in the field I have concluded that the hardest part in this job is not the technical one, but the dealing with yourself. Yet, through the process you get to develop virtues that eventually make you a better person. Don't give up :)

Re:Ask HN: How to Become an Artist? on Monday January 03, 2022 @04:35PM (#29787268)
Isn't becoming an artist supposed to stem from a genuine need to express one's self, and everything else (recognition, being invited, making money) something to consider at much later time along the way, if at all?
Re:New muscle layer discovered on the jaw on Monday December 27, 2021 @03:31PM (#29706463)
To me it seems a surprise that this has taken so long to be discovered in general. I thought we would know all muscles by now.
Re:Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China on Sunday December 19, 2021 @06:04PM (#29619483)
I'd guess nowadays it doesn't make a difference
Re:Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China on Sunday December 19, 2021 @11:03AM (#29614912)
Exactly. Moreover, countries that support Taiwan don't do it to liberate "poor Taiwanese people from bad China's tyranny". Instead, they will use that as an excuse to back actions that support their own national interests. Exactly like what China does. Personally I understand everyone's point of view in this game, yet I wish Taiwanese people could be left alone to live as they wish. What's certain is that it's a more complicated situation that people tend to oversimplify, as usual.
Re:President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment on Friday December 17, 2021 @05:38PM (#29599220)
Not necessary. There's a chance that they support their government, and they didn't want to hear the usual western stuff about freedom and how bad their country is. I had many similar experiences as a student. Western students would start this discussion to Chinese students in anticipation of hearing how oppressed they feel. What they would often get is an irritated Chinese student who will tell them that it's hard to control 1.3 billion people and that their government has done a lot of them etc. And the western student's brains would hardwire unable to accept that answer and conclude "Clearly they're brainwashed" :D PS: I'm not taking sides here
My boss recently transfered to my team a lady that was lacking very basic skills. I was, and still am happy to mentor her, and have her in our team, like everyone else who joins us. But I suspect that the only reason we keep her is my manager's KPI that is driven by the (well known) views of higher managent in our company. This makes me feel very bad towards all those candidates I rejected that had much more experience than her, but still not enough for the roles we are recruiting for (we set the bar pretty high). This favoritism is implicitly discrimination against these candidates. But you don't fix discrimination with more discrimination. Instead of moving forward, we repeat the same mistakes with different decoration. I want to move somewhere far away :(

Re:German Court Rules Against Internet Security Non-Profit Quad9 on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @12:04PM (#29406125)
Hmmm okay, so first of all I should had said Berlin, as perhaps my experience does not necessarily reflect the situation in the whole Germany. So about Berlin: Aside from the internet paper-based communication, and general love for bureaucuracy, I found the city's infrastructure to be generally deprived. When I arrived Tegel and Schönefeld were the only airports, the state of which I frankly found shameful, especially for the capital of Europe's biggest economy. And the new Brandenburg airport that took 10 years to finish is not great either. I found the state of S-Bahn and U-Bahn pretty disappointing too, and parts of the public transport system to be constantly broken. Also the general customer service is very bad, a lot of places don't even accept credit cards, and overall people seem to be reluctant to adopt new technologies. I have the feeling that Berlin is stuck in it's golden age, and doesn't want to move forward. As for the point of reference, I moved from Hong Kong (not my native country), which I consider to be very modern in these aspects, so the whole experience was like a time-travel back to the 90s :)
Re:German Court Rules Against Internet Security Non-Profit Quad9 on Wednesday December 01, 2021 @05:39AM (#29402509)
Since when is it okay to say these things? People not up to date to do their jobs are the problem, not "old" people. Blame behaviors not groups.

PS: I moved to Germany and I want to move out asap because of how outdated everything is here.

Quite possibly. But still, what happened to personal responsibility? Having ADHD does it mean I have no judgement at all. If I evaluated the risk of forgetting is too high, I could choose not to subscribe in the first place. Or if I still think this app is important enough, I could make sure I find another way to be reminded to cancel.

What I mainly question is the demand culture, that a lot of users have towards developers - even towards people voluntarily put their time to do opensource work.

Agreed, and that's what I would expect too. In fact, if the app works as they claim to be, users would rush to subscribe after the 30 day trial. Yet, criticism doesn't necessarily need to be accompanied with unjustified accusations and demands. I find this attitude to be a very common pattern nowadays. Criticism can be constructive and to the point without any of these.
While criticism can be good when constructive, I think these comments are a bit dramatic and make way too many assumptions.

I would expect that it's more financially lucrative to have a happy userbase, which translates to a good reputation and thus larger user-base, rather rip-off a few who will eventually give bad reviews and create a bad reputation. To me the current pricing model sounds more like a bad decision rather than anything else. But in any case, if I didn't like it I would just not use it, rather than throwing accusations around on malicious intentions without having any evidence.

PS: I am not even remotely affiliated with the creators of that app

I don't see anything wrong with it. Surely a lot of people with ADHD would be happy to pay for an app that helps them overcome their problem, and the monetary price most likely exceeds the benefit (assuming the method used by this app works as advertised). In fact the price is much cheaper than a regular visit to a therapist. The problem I see here is the current subscription model. If people are happy with the trial, and see results, they would be happy to subscribe for a monthly fee along with their Netflixes and Spotifys.

Re:The Mom Test – How to talk to customers on Monday September 27, 2021 @12:38PM (#28672881)
Why? It is still true. Maybe in the future it won't be, but currently 99.99% of moms in this planet are not tech savvy, whether we like it or not. Remember that moms being born in the 1930s are still out there - not everything written has some hidden political intention. As we move forward, if more women happen to get interested into technology, this might change. But until then, jumping on someone for the sake of political correctness - because there may be a tech-savvy mom somewhere out there that you decided to defend, or because it shouldn't be true in your ideal world - is toxic. And as you see people are downvoting you for being this kind of person.
