News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

One important step I've found helpful is asking if the candidate would like to receive feedback before sharing. This should also curb the risk of litigation.
Re:Using HAProxy as an API Gateway, Part 1 on Tuesday October 02, 2018 @11:06PM (#18127370)
The biggest problem with GraphQL in this regard is that it is a single endpoint. API gateways often define authorization rules, throttling rates, and caching times differently for each route. Consequently, you may need to write authorization, throttling, and caching logic in a separate layer or perhaps even in your microservices themselves.
Re:A New Face for Pebble on Wednesday September 23, 2015 @02:19PM (#10266900)
I wonder if the bezel allows for a normal square display underneath?
Re:Pebble Reveals Pebble Time Steel and a Smartstrap System on Tuesday March 03, 2015 @10:53AM (#9138275)

Their branding is great. Now whenever i see "time", it reminds me of the watch...

Re:Get Started with the Microsoft Band SDK Preview on Monday February 23, 2015 @03:01PM (#9096610)
FWIW, I currently get two-factor auth codes on my band just because it shows text messages out of the box.
Re:List of available 2 letter domain names on Monday February 23, 2015 @12:11PM (#9095409)
Haha. I also attempted this one and failed.
Have you seen pictures of what drone props can do to skin? Even the handheld drones draw blood easily. The $500 phantoms can cause damage requiring stitches... Not sure a baseball is the best analogy.
Re:Nginx Tutorial: Developing Modules on Monday July 28, 2014 @12:36PM (#8097816)
I was hoping for a performance related answer, but you are right. I might walk through this and see if one way is faster than the other. Thanks!
Re:Nginx Tutorial: Developing Modules on Monday July 28, 2014 @12:18PM (#8097676)
In a cursory glance, this appears to be logic (token, redis, etc) that can be handled by Nginx+Lua. Is there any reason to do it this way vs the other?
Re:Google I/O 2014 on Wednesday June 25, 2014 @02:49PM (#7945982)
Being an attendee from last year, I can guarantee you that it's people still filing in to find seats well into the presentation. The exit is towards the back left of where the camera is. People going to the right are looking for seats. It's still not an attractive angle.
Re:The utility of switching lanes when stuck in traffic on Monday April 21, 2014 @04:12PM (#7623450)
I do agree that it isn't the best idea, but I find name-calling the worst way to support an argument.
Re:Lens Blur in the new Google Camera app on Wednesday April 16, 2014 @04:40PM (#7600390)
"Bokeh" is specific to photo characteristics. "blur" is more general but still applies: "a thing that cannot be seen clearly".
Ten cents says it's Tencent.
This is exactly what has happened.
It actually makes it great for sharing certain funny bits with friends.
I just realized how important the number 4 in this whole deal. #classickitkat
I'm interested in seeing Google's Compute Engine show up in some of these benchmarks. Any reason why someone would not want to use them? Some benchmark's I've seen show them with awesome stats.
Re:Google Glass hands-on: Not a good device for consumers on Thursday May 09, 2013 @01:29PM (#5681726)
Well that's one way to handle a big review about technology of the future: don't write a review and suggest weaning yourself off of technology.
Re:Why You Make Less Money on Friday March 29, 2013 @12:16PM (#5461421)
Same logic with Real Estate agents. My friend's agent tried to get him to sell his house with every low-ball offer that came in...
I would think it's relatively easy to swap in refined data after the fact. The attraction here is the process to consume the data.
Re:Automatic: Your Smart Driving Assistant on Tuesday March 12, 2013 @01:22PM (#5363273)
Progressive already does this with a similar gadget: http://www.progressive.com/auto/snapshot.aspx
Re:Python at Netflix on Monday March 11, 2013 @12:34PM (#5357828)
I'm pushing for more python use at my company as well. It's tough as everyone is drinking the ruby kool-aid.

P.S. I really enjoyed your talk at QCon SF last year!

Welp, there goes every plan I had this weekend. Thanks.
My first thought is that companies would not want to forward data to a company that enables a current customer to possibly leave for better rates.

Re:How Megaupload was Investigated and Indicted on Friday January 20, 2012 @03:56PM (#3491185)
Great article. This might cause some downvoting, but perhaps they really did bring all this upon themselves and the Anonymous attacks are not warranted in this case. Who stores those kinds of emails in plain text on American soil?
Re:MegaUpload has been taken down by the feds on Thursday January 19, 2012 @03:19PM (#3486463)
Haven't we already proved that piracy can't directly equated to losing $500 million?
Re:Forbes: If Facebook Can't Stop SOPA, We Can Do It For Them on Thursday January 12, 2012 @01:16PM (#3457362)
This article pointed out something I hadn't really thought about: random album pictures on facebook get more real estate than profile pictures in the news feed. If I started posting political items through that huge block of news feed, I bet people will start ignoring all my posts...
Re:Hourly Hacker News Snapshot on Tuesday July 05, 2011 @01:54PM (#2730804)
I really like this idea.

I was messing with the hours manually, and realized it would be very cool to have a timeline-toolbar at the top that would allow the user to fly through hours of the front page.

It would allow us to see the comment count changing over time and seeing which stories quickly disappear and which stick around.

/my two cents
