You absolutely don't need a Mac Mini - Plex/Jellyfin runs great on a cheap Intel N100/N150/N95 Mini PC (with hardware transcoding). Prices are still up from two years ago - but you can find them for $250 if you know where to look.
N150 isn't really what you'd want to use for a gaming machine. At a budget of mid $300s - the best (new) Mini PC you're going to find right now is probably this unit[1] with a Ryzen 7 7735U (680M iGPU) and 16GB RAM. Not the most powerful device - but I have a similar one I use to play emulator games, indie games on steam - throw Steam OS on it and it's a great living room device. Expand that budget to $530 and you can get this guy[2] with a Ryzen 7 255 (780M iGPU) - which will play modern games (on low settings for many).

Very useful! I found this article a really good summary of the gtld situation:

Re:Butterflies use optical illusions to dodge predators on Thursday October 01, 2026 @08:37PM (#49928621)
> The team combined multiple lines of evidence. They used a high-speed camera to film real butterflies taking off at over 1,000 frames per second to capture how their patterns behave in flight, as seen through the eyes of a bird.

> To test how patterns affected real attacks, 100 volunteers acted as “predators”, trying to catch virtual butterflies on a touchscreen.

This sounds fascinating, and I'd love to see footage demonstrating the barber-pole effect. If that's not available, I'd alternatively love to see footage of volunteers trying to tap butterflies on an iPad.

The winning model (Cloud Agent) is Promptless, and in very small grey text, you might be able to spot a "Built by Promptless" on the page if you look closely.

While I'm sure this benchmark is one worth optimizing against, and some real thought was put into it - it also seems possible that the rubric was specifically designed to be one that helps promote its creator. If one runs a contest, it's a dangerous situation to also have an entrant. Either the contest can be favored for the entrant, or the entrant can have special training privileges. To put it another way, it can't be assumed you'll have a fair trial when your judge is also your uncle.

Not saying that this has happened here, but third party, unaffiliated benchmarks are always preferred for this reason.

Re:Big Tech's Capex Is Half of Wall Street's Profit Growth on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:35PM (#49926100)
My goodness. It's the first sentence of the article even. At least it's only the third post from the top of HN right now. I guess favorably we can assume a human wrote the Korean version and just translated it via ChatGPT.

Your twitter link is a summary of the linked article - from the editor-in-chief - in case someone else sees "this guy" and assumes it would be a different take than the one in the featured article.
> The LLM is not playing a game where it will be punished for good-faith argumentation, so it can afford to do more of it.

I suppose that's a fair point as well. Though, if I'm arguing with a human - and they pull up ChatGPT to make their points and do their arguing for them, I would consider that bad-faith. Even if it might be the same exact dialog as if I pulled out my phone and discussed it with AI, without of the human middle-manning. Maybe I'm just particularly sensitive, but for me, there's something about my argument being with a real human that makes it much more emotionally charged, and prompts my mind to close. I'm aware of this and try to resist, but it's I think very natural

I think it's not just the persuasiveness of the models that make them "experts at changing minds" - but also the fact that they're not humans.

When disagreeing with a human, it's very easy to view it as a competition. One is right, one is wrong - the one who is wrong is the loser. To change your mind is to be submissive to the other. I exaggerate, but I think we all feel this way at some point or another. It's why political arguments at Thanksgiving get heated. It's the fact that there's people who think something different, and think YOU'RE wrong - and vice versa! With a model, there's no person to get upset with, or to feel competitive with - to muscle for rank - or to temper your affection for while wanting to correct them.

The AI is only interacting because you asked, and clearly has no emotional stake in winning the argument. To change your mind in this context isn't to lose a contest. This makes it much more palatable to read rebuttals to your ideas - not to mention the tone and style seek to avoid offense to the reader as much as possible.

Thanks for defending your friend, I respect it! I didn't mean to entirely undermine the content - it's clear a lot of thought was put into it - though that doesn't change that it is a bit of content marketing. Nothing wrong with that, I just think I instinctually "downgrade" articles when there's a CTA "Book Consultation" at the top.
Re:YuE2 · Frontier Music with Symbolic Planning on Thursday September 10, 2026 @10:09PM (#49652724)
Absolutely agreed. Art made by humans is interesting not just because it sounds it looks novel, but because it reveals something about the artist.
Re:Genuine Creativity Is Your New Moat (2026) on Thursday September 10, 2026 @04:21PM (#49649668)
I both agree and disagree with this article (which is mostly an ad for the studio, but such is life). The premise that now taste is the differentiator is one I see shared a lot. I think it's easy to agree with the sentiment because it's sneakily optimistic - we all think we have good taste, so we're all going to make it out of this alright.

> What the Gen-AI-enabled world needs now is better taste. It’s easy—trivial, even—to stand up a site or a basic app. But so what? Are you looking at the user experience from end to end? Are you questioning your own premises? Have you considered a completely, fundamentally different approach?

I think it's not just better taste that gets people to consider user experience end-to-end, or to question their own premises, or to try different approaches. It's effort. It's going in, using your app, considering how it will be used, and tweaking it (manually or through AI) until it's reached a standard you set. This process will also refine your taste and improve it - your taste is not something you're born with that sets your apart.

This process of repeated incremental effort and improvement is one that ultimately imbues the resulting work in your own style and creativity - not just the fact that you are a 'creative person'. Effort is still the moat. I struggle to explain this point as well as I want - I wrote about it a little here, but it's still messy in my head:

Ask HN: Is there any solution to the AI infestation?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed, but nearly every post on Hacker News is getting LLM comments now. For anyone who works regularly with LLMs, it's very obvious from the tone alone - and a quick check to previous comments will confirm it. Some have gotten slightly more sophisticated and auto-add typos, or other tricks. I'm sure there's plenty that I don't recognize as AI either.I...

Re:Kids These Days on Monday August 31, 2026 @04:23PM (#49514451)
The article intentionally is giving an overly optimistic view of the modern day, when giving the argument that "kids these days" are better off, and it's quickly contrasted with a pessimistic view:

> children and adolescents are more likely to spend their time alone; they devote hours each day to staring at their phones; they play less, sleep less, and read less for pleasure.... Our children are living in a time of crisis

Yes it's stated less technically proficient than your version, but the point remains that you can look at the current internet as a blessing or a curse, and is mostly just an intro to the rest of the article

Re:Mario Meets Pareto on Thursday August 06, 2026 @11:04AM (#49197717)
Apologies for the self-promotion, but I learned about the Pareto Front from this site a while back - and applied it to Mini PCs with https://minipcs.zip which plots Mini PCs based on Compute vs Price (and other metrics) - highlighting the pareto front to find the optimal unit.
Re:Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro? on Saturday July 18, 2026 @10:39AM (#48958559)
> there are dozens of no-brand options on Amazon and Ali that do 4K60fps

I have to very strongly disagree with this sentiment. I have personally tested quite a few no-name "4K 60fps" cameras from Amazon and AliExpress. Many of them upscale from 1080 - which is fine I guess - but then in 60fps will use a crop sensor and upscale from like ~640. Even with the more recognizable SJCam and Akaso brands, unless you're paying ~$200 - you're going to get upscaling, bad color science, bad image distortion. When comparing against a GoPro 5 (first 4k 60 entry) or 8 (first with USB C) the difference is astounding.

Though perhaps this is the difference between good and great that you refer to - but for me, it's certainly worth getting a used GoPro vs any of these modern cheap alternatives.

Unfortunately current new GoPros don't improve on their existing line enough to justify paying current prices. I wish I could get a new 2018 quality GoPro knockoff for <$200

Ahhhhh I'm guessing that's a Device Pixel Ratio issue I completely forgot to consider (EG rendering 4x pixels than it should makes it slow, and the nodes smaller). I'll play around with it, thanks for the heads up
Thanks for the feedback - horrible how? It works fine on my Android but someone else said similar that uses iPhone, just not sure exactly what the issues was
I intentionally have them excluded - I guess because my use case is mostly gaming, homelab, plex server type stuff. But people use them for OpenClaw and whatnot right? I'll add em back in
Re:I am a person who will look at the Steam Machine and cry on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @12:59PM (#48662707)
I've always worried about latency for that - but it's ironic since I regularly stream over dedicated WiFi to my Quest VR headset. I'll have to give it a try some time. If they have some asynchronous reprojection tech for streaming that would be ideal
I have a desktop with a relatively powerful 5070 (I think) GPU for playing VR games. But my priorities for couch & controller games is not really around super high graphics performance.

Lately I find myself playing classic games on emulator, or generally games without huge graphics demands (been playing that climbing game PEAK a lot lately).

For me, getting a random no-name-brand Mini PC is such a fantastic deal these days. Throw bazzite or now real Steam OS on it, have access to your whole library - it's a linux machine you can configure to your hearts content. I love it. Probably the best deal on amazon right now is this machine, though there's others if you know how to search.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DK34WJ84

Example of real-life gaming performance here - nothing mindblowing, but more than you'd expect from a tiny box that costs like $400.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlup85AxRd0

Just wipe windows immediately and put SteamOS on it and you're good to go

Exactly - I just built myself a knockoff Steam Machine by putting Steam OS (might switch to Bazzite but so far real Steam OS is fine) on a $300 Mini PC and I'm super pleased with it. 16GB of RAM and a Ryzen 7640HS runs all of my library just fine, though to be fair, I'm not much of a AAA super modern high-graphics gamer. Doing a lot of emulation these days.
https://luke.zip/posts/zip-defense/

I get asked this a lot, so here's my defense!

Fixed!
An earlier version included a rainbow color scale but it felt cluttered - I'll definitely bring it back in some capacity for sure - thanks for the feedback
