News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

yahoobing

I think you are right in the near future but not today. I don’t think we are quite there yet with AI but the pace of improvement is breathtaking and producing code (and more generally “logic” which could be code but also machine code, system design, LLM prompts and so on) is such a pot of gold the AI companies will go for it.
2% time is superficial review.

For a 40h all week job that is less than 1h

Not enough time to even understand the requirements of a 40h job.

10h would be minimum.

Unless you are just checking that the style guide is correct and obvious missed null checks.

For this reason I feel code reviews are a bit silly and pair programming is way better (pairing with a mix of sync and async work) but that is an aside.

In addition a code review being short is usually because the coder and reviewer are both very competent. Once AI enters the chat the reviewer needs to look very closely at every line.

Can an AI make a useful PR on a 1million LOC project even.
Re:Ask HN: Is it worth working two 90% Jobs? on Monday May 27, 2024 @02:14AM (#40488100)
Fired for what though? They are saying they’ll do the hours. They are just “working 2 jobs”. Just make sure the contracts allow it and don’t conflict e.g. both require you to turn up at 9am.
Did I pay attention to my kids? 100% otherwise 0%
Re:Ask HN: How would you chunk a large Excel file? on Monday May 27, 2024 @01:14AM (#40487767)
One liner is a file of any size without the 10 or 13 ascii codes?
If 7 out of 10 coders are made redundant because of AI right now in May 2024 then you had very bad coders to begin with.

If you do the same with translators now in May 2024 you will provide a horrible service.

June may be a different kettle of fish!

“NFT Rug Pull” is a redundant expression.
I would think intuitively it is a different brain process.

I wonder if brain-wise reading code is similar to a judge reading through various laws to make a judgement?

Is it also similar to reading a math proof? Are all these things different?

Re:Ask HN: What sites are similar to Hacker News? on Sunday May 26, 2024 @09:11PM (#40486752)
Reddit gets a bad rep but many communities are great. Obviously the UX sucks but there are workarounds. Some subs are moderated more strictly than HN, many less so, so there is a mix. There is nothing quite like HN but you could join a mix of subs to get the same spectrum of programming, science, tech and a touch of politics.
Re:The one-year anniversary of my total glossectomy on Sunday May 26, 2024 @09:06PM (#40486719)
One thing I get from this is you need to be really on the ball when you are this sick. Make hard decisions, do tonnes of research and so on. It is probably important to have support people who can “Karen” for the need of a better word the medical and insurance system when it isn’t working. Probably could be a job in itself. Probably is. The follow on is it helps to be wealthy before you get sick.
Re:Ask HN: Have you tried weight loss drugs? on Sunday May 26, 2024 @08:43PM (#40486623)
It will be hard to pick apart why. Muscles increase metabolism plus I suspect after a workout you feel like protein not carbs/sugar. You eat that and feel full. Then there is plain old confounding of people who have a good diet and people who exercise.

It is very fast. Is it using a small Llama model?
