There also was a site like this with images and a GUI.

Does anybody remember the name?

Found it, it is:

Does not work at all for me.

Is this a commercial product?

Re:Google discloses YouTube ad revenues of $15.15B on Monday February 03, 2020 @04:38PM (#22229459)

overall ad spend which is $150
    billion per year
According to statistica it is $560B:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/236943/global-advertisin...

Then YouTube would be about 3% of it.

Re:Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @12:46PM (#22183494)
For iOS, can't you just wrap your web application in a thin native app layer that provides the push functionality?
Re:Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:48AM (#22182620)
Is there a reason that the web is not a target of react native?

It seems somewhat insane to have a cross platform approach and leave out the biggest platform of all, the web.

Or - looking at it the other way round - what approaches are there to take a working pwa website and turn it into an app? What advantages over such an approach can react native bring to the table?

Re:Off-Facebook activity on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @07:33AM (#22179781)
Even if the app had it in their privacy policy, that would not mean it is legal to send your data to Facebook.

GDPR requires the users consent to do so. Having a statement in a privacy policy is imho not enough to qualify as consent.

Re:Off-Facebook activity on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @06:42AM (#22179492)
I am in Europe, so by law (GDPR) I have the right to make them delete all of this data.

How do I do so?

Also, I never consented to this being collected. How can their practice of collecting this type of data be GDPR compliant?

At what point are video and sound getting out of sync?

At 12:50 the policeman slams shut the door of her car and it is in sync with the audio.

At 25:55 the same door gots slammed, but no sound is to be heard. Maybe because the policeman is carrying the microphone? Is he that far away?

At about 48:00 the door of another car gets slammed. Its clearly on the audio, but about 1 second too early.

Re:Slavoj Žižek on GReferendum: The Greeks are correct on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @05:12PM (#9848149)

    You wish poverty on millions?
How much does Greece have to pay per year? I think it's something like $5bn? AFAIK they have a GDP of $300bn and $100bn of that are converted into taxes. Why would paying $5bn result in poverty of millions then? Isn't their spending on military alone in the billions?
Re:Slavoj Žižek on GReferendum: The Greeks are correct on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @04:58PM (#9848056)
Greece has tax incomes of what, $100bn a year? Why do you say they cannot repay their debts? I don't know the numbers, but I guess it is less then $10bn per year they have to pay.
Re:Slavoj Žižek on GReferendum: The Greeks are correct on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @04:47PM (#9847995)

Meanwhile people sleep on the streets in Greece,
    from children to pensioners.
GDP in Greece is $18k per capita. Why do they sleep on the street? Where do people in Slovakia sleep? They have only $16k per capita.

I have friends in Macedonia. They have a GDP of $5k per capita. And I witness nobody sleeping on the streets, when I visit them.

Isn't Greece a relatively wealthy country, compared to several others in Europe?

Re:Slavoj Žižek on GReferendum: The Greeks are correct on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @04:37PM (#9847935)
Pacta sunt servanda - contracts must be adhered to.

Greece has to pay back its debt. You can philosophize all you want. There is no way around it.

The question is if one should "fix" this at all. If you change the behavior from "foreign keys do not activate triggers" to "foreign keys activate triggers", everyone who uses triggers will have to audit their applications for potential problems. And for large applications, that can be a lot of work.

MariaDB documents "foreign keys do not activate triggers" as the standard behavior:

https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb/trigger-limitations/

Personally, I am grateful for software that changes as seldom as possible. I don't want to spend time on "updating" my application because something down in the stack changed.

Giving an app full internet access is still too much for me. I wonder why Android does not implement a permission to access a specific domain. A Facebook app that has access to facebook.com would be fine with me.
Re:Why I dislike systemd on Monday June 15, 2015 @04:15AM (#9718100)
> This page's horrible readability

It might not look fancy, but the readability is way better then on most sites these days. It loads fast, it has enough contrast, there are no distracting elements like images or animations that make it hard to focus on the content, scroll works as expected, the content is not split into useless pages, it does not make my fan spin up because some elements use insane amounts of computation power, content is not squeezed into some tiny box as it often is on other websites...

If the average website would let me read as comfortably as this one, that would be a huge step forward.

Re:Why Go is doomed to succeed on Saturday June 13, 2015 @12:06PM (#9711414)
Without a definition of "succeed", this cannot be argued against or agreed to. Like every other language, Go will be used by some people and not used by other people.
Re:Hello World: Windows 10 Available on July 29 on Monday June 01, 2015 @08:00AM (#9637912)
Is Windows a good citizen on the harddisk nowadays? I stopped trying Windows releases because they used to change my bootsector or something, so my machine suddenly only booted Windows. Instead of showing me a menu (grub?) of partitions to choose from.

If you sold every share of every company in the U.S.
and used the money to buy up all the factories, machines
and inventory, you’d have some cash left over.
"So by this theory the value of a tech startup is the developer's laptops and the value of a yoga studio is the loaner mats."

Where do you see a "theory" in that statement? I only see a calculation.

How about Linux on the new MacBook? It's a nice machine and my old lenovo looks a bit "unhipsterish" when I work in a cafe. Also it's heavier. But I live in Linux, so I would have to be sure it works.
Hmm.. what do I have to do to experience those performance problems? I use Mint and Debian on my machines and I never have any problems. Nothing ever stutters or lags or whatever.

I mainly use Firefox, the Terminal, Gimp and Libre Office. No performance problems whatsoever. And I have pretty old machines. An over 5 years old lenovo laptop and a similarely old desktop machine.

C64 please!
Nice!

Do you use one of the HN APIs or do you have all HN posts stored locally?

I am a bit confused about the interface. Sometimes I get charts and sometimes I don't. The "Yearly" and "Monthly" links don't work for me. I am using Firefox.

It would also be nice to have a percentage view that gives relative numbers.

The results are somewhat fuzzy. For example "coder" and "coders" give the exact same graph. Looks like "coders" also finds posts that don't contain "coders" at all but only "coder".

This is the chart I refer to in the title:

http://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/BT-AB408_GOOGLE_16...

Why would adsense banners bring in 12% less then last year? The internet is on the rise, so you would expect a healthy gowth.

Are these the adblockers that are at play here?

Re:Ask HN: How do you log application events? on Monday April 27, 2015 @04:19AM (#9444955)
I track them via the analytics event tracking API. It is really useful and full of surprises when you look at the stats:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9444862

I run a bunch of websites. Each has over 100,000 visitors per month. Most are pretty old, look like complete trash and are a nightmare to use on small screens.

Over the last months, from time to time I redesigned one of them. Make them look good and work nicely on small screens.

Feedback from users has been great. I get "Wow, looks so much better!!" and "Awesome redesign!!" messages sent to me all the time.

But surprisingly, the metrics I follow did not change a bit. Not even when I only look at the analytics for mobile phones. Bounce rate, pages per visit, time on site, events on the site - it all just stays flat. A site that had 6 pageviews per visitor before making it mobile friendly has 6 pageviews per visitor after.

Strange, hu? How can a site where you have to awkwardly zoom in after each click get the same pageviews per visit on a mobile phone as a site where everything is layed out on the screen in a nice way?

How are your experiences with making sites mobile friendly?
