Until there is a clear successor, I don't think we can bury reddit.
No one mentions it so there you go: mataroa means "hope" in Maohi
Re:A neuroscientist prepares for death on Wednesday January 05, 2022 @04:07AM (#29806790)
If there is an afterlife possible in our universe, the information necessary for it must be compatible with its physics.

But so far, down to particle physics, nothing seems compatible with the idea of an out of body soul that is able to process this information.

Re:Only 90s web developers remember this (2014) on Monday November 22, 2021 @04:12AM (#29304401)
The best thing back then (as a young adult with too much time) was how easy you could hack a lot of the online forums or servers.

searching altavista for phpbb forums using a version vulnerable to a given exploit or using cross site scripting waiting for someone to bite it, and then upload 99 shell everywhere you would gain access.

It really felt like having superpower.

Most people don't know this truth, in particular here in France where the name Cousteau still holds its aura.

I know because I watched and enjoyed the shows as a kid and most people at the time liked him. The only person I knew back then who didn't like the man was my dad (a sailor).

What I mean is the name is still strong enough to attract some interest.

The idea behind individual solar energy is not consuming it real time but associating it with a storage solution to allow bigger throughput. You're not going to make toasts all day

Re:Six Months at Riot Games on Thursday August 09, 2018 @08:17AM (#17723485)
Well I still think it shouldn't come as a surprise. We've got many example of successful industries with such culture, why would video game work any different.
Re:Six Months at Riot Games on Thursday August 09, 2018 @07:59AM (#17723375)
> I am simply surprised they manage to produce anything at all in such a culture, let alone a hit game.

The same culture you can find in Holywood, where hundreds of successful movies with unrivaled popular impact were produced.

Re:Mecca Then and Now – 128 Years of Growth on Monday October 05, 2015 @09:50AM (#10331767)
Read again,

I said it IS interesting ... to anyone.

You see the content drive the audience and then the audience drive the content.

Too much broad interesting articles and it's not Hacker News anymore.

Re:Mecca Then and Now – 128 Years of Growth on Monday October 05, 2015 @09:39AM (#10331701)
The difference is the audience.

While I found this article interesting in itself, it's something that can be interesting to anyone, regardless of its background.

While harmless at first look, this can be an issue if too many content fall into this category.

Then you end up with a reddit clone instead of HackerNews. I'm here to see hacker news, not interesting stuff for anyone.

Re:Mecca Then and Now – 128 Years of Growth on Monday October 05, 2015 @09:05AM (#10331521)
Well you just said it: "Anything that good hackers would find interesting" and not "Anything that anyone would find interesting".
Re:Mecca Then and Now – 128 Years of Growth on Monday October 05, 2015 @08:29AM (#10331330)
While a cool and nicely illustrated article, I fail to see how it's relevant to HN.

Re:Why Can’t We Fall Asleep? on Wednesday July 08, 2015 @06:58AM (#9850848)
if you want to wake up early eat very early dinners.

Have a full breakfast to avoid sleeping during the day

Those 2 facts seem conflicting to me. In one case food deprivation helps you wake up while the other case it would make you feel asleep?

Re:Google has quietly launched a GitHub competitor on Thursday June 25, 2015 @09:08AM (#9777564)
When they went out of beta/preview, the prices skyrocketed to absurdness and many people had to shutdown their app because of everything being coupled to their specific API and the notice being to short to adapt.

So yeah, don't invest into something when you don't know what the final pricing will be.

Re:Google has quietly launched a GitHub competitor on Thursday June 25, 2015 @04:14AM (#9776558)
When I go to princing and quota I get:

> This Beta release of Cloud Source Repositories is free and can be used to store up to 500 MB of source files.

No thanks! I still remember what happened with AppEngine.

Re:Ask HN: A coding test or working for free? on Wednesday May 27, 2015 @12:25PM (#9612454)
Yes. In some countries, laws are strongly in favor of employee protection (for a good reason).

That's the case here. One employer could severely abuse paying candidates for some quick job without any contract being even mentioned between the 2.

Re:Ask HN: A coding test or working for free? on Wednesday May 27, 2015 @10:51AM (#9611747)
Except you cannot do that in every country. You know, Labour right.

Is the water choice important, what do you recommend?

Model references are defined so that it can call any object, with the ability to define conditions to access objects, perhaps looping through lists of objects via SQL select statements and using TEMPLATE tags to create new DOM objects.

What - the - fuck

Re:We have broken HTTP on Monday January 12, 2015 @09:30AM (#8874002)
You can't expect everyone to master everything. It's like ranting about how the whole classroom haven't got A+.

It's pointless ultimately.

The real question is how can we improve a protocol so it's better used by most people. Hence why it's evolving. Nothing should be set in stone forever and then expect everyone to comply to it or die.

Re:We have broken HTTP on Monday January 12, 2015 @04:29AM (#8873051)
What a pointless rant. Things evolve, even norms and specs.

There's a reason why URNs are not used in the code, there are not enough by themselves, if you need use URIs.

There's a reason people don't use every status code in every webapps. It's a waste of time, better spent elsewhere.

Most webapps uses more then GET.

Etc. Anyway, HTML is not broken, it's used everywhere by billions of users every seconds.
