News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

xnx

This keeps getting posted, but it doesn't seem interesting to discuss. Money is the way we decide how scare resources are allocated.

If Sam wants to buy 16GB of 6 year laptop RAM, he can send me a check for $2000.

Better analogy might be that instead of everyone having gas powered generators they run for 14 hours a day, we should put them all in one place and run extension cords to peoples homes.
I sell the GPUs I have now for $2B for the right to buy the same number of GPUs in 10 months for $1.6B when my datacenter is complete
Is #3 true? This seems very inefficient. Aren't futures markets supposed to fix this type of thing?

Phones (Google Pixels at least) use sensor data from inertial sensors and slight hand movement as part of their depth calculation: https://research.google/pubs/depth-from-motion-for-smartphon...

Don't let Ford PR crowd out the primary message that they collect and sell your data.
> AI Can Write More of the Code. We Still Have to Engineer the System

2 years ago AI could not write most code well. Today it definitely can.

AI will probably do just fine at "engineering the system" in another year or two.

Sounds cool. Do you have patents on this?
Cool that Google did this so quick to take the wind out of the sails of other space datacenter hucksters.
Also no telling that AI will be more lucrative than some "boring" industry like power generation.
Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:32PM (#50342355)
The data sounds interesting, but the visualization is so bad that I one-slopped an alternative: https://www.alwaysleaveanote.com/gender-swapping-names/

Came here to say the same. Anyone doing data visualization should think long and hard before using something beside a line or bar chart. Almost everything else is worse in multiple ways.

Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:03AM (#50337761)

AI is getting so good, it will probably be both.

Can we go back to calling thm sysadmins?
Re:OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:47AM (#50313288)
The end state is OpenAI as a division of Microsoft.
I was never interested in gamedev, but I am interested in gameplay design.

GenAI lets me toy with gameplay design without having to first spend a lot of time mucking with code or assets.

Gemini 4 Argon was released in October. It was a big part of the PHP2Shell story.
People are desperately looking for signs here, but I just see Intel returning to historical levels. Intel is still up for the year.
Have safety maxxers had any effect on model releases? I see no slowdown caused by them.

Good point. I forgot about Gemini Nano too: https://developer.android.com/ai/gemini-nano
What data does this method retrieve?

yt-dlp already gets a lot of metadata like: duration, title, description, timestamp, view_count, like_count, repost_count, comment_count, save_count, etc.

Re:Reddit will require an account to access on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:04PM (#50296810)
Reddit going the way of stackoverflow? Such a huge portion of posts on any city subreddit are direct or indirect content/submarine marketing.

This seems to kind of mirror the move by Discord to make public messages discoverable.

Had to look up "DRM" to see you meant "Direct Rendering Manager" and not "Digital Rights Management".
There are ways it could be handled. Waymo imports Chinese made Zeekr vans, but Waymo probably replaces all onboard software and hardware.
