Re:RuneLite – open-source RuneScape Client on Saturday June 22, 2024 @05:03AM (#40757545)
I tried getting into OSRS a few weeks ago. I noticed the official Jagex client doesn't run on Linux, so I installed RuneLite. However Jagex recently mandated the transition of email/password logins to a fancy proprietary OAuthy thing that _requires_ their official launcher.

Apparently the kosher way around this is installing RuneLite and the Jagex launcher in Lutris or Wine, but I just gave up.

Re:New way to have complex discussions on Tuesday May 07, 2024 @04:41AM (#40283537)
The communities are generally significantly smaller but yes. Двач, 8chan, lain, and sharty come to mind.

They're rarely "nice" places though (lain is fairly pleasant).

Re:I don't want to fill out your contact form on Saturday May 04, 2024 @11:50AM (#40258507)
Yeah, Canonical asks you how you performed in your high school English class as if that's something you're supposed to know.

Is that really a valuable metric for a software engineer?

Re:DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android on Saturday May 04, 2024 @12:50AM (#40254942)
I don't. Deliberately exposing people to risk for fun?
Why would I buy something that kills me the day after the warranty expires?
Re:00Key a 75% Keyboard on Friday May 03, 2024 @12:06PM (#40249257)
Caps Lock is my layer key, so Caps + 1 is F1, and so on.

I've always preferred holding Shift when SHOUTING AT PEOPLE ONLINE anyway, so I've never missed lacking Caps.

I don't want to spoil the surprise, but this is worth the read just for the "twist" at the end.
This is fantastic. Great idea!
Re:Google Made Me Ruin a Perfectly Good Website on Sunday April 28, 2024 @07:05AM (#40187664)
Not only did they choose to make their website worse for money, doing so encourages Google to continue doing this.

This all coming from "an anticapitalist tech blog" humoured me a little.

Testing multiple DEs would be great but I think there's merit to calling Plasma more Linux-y (or hacker-y?) than GNOME.
Thank you.
I really wish there were something like this for Phoenix. I want to like it, but I feel a little inundated with all the codegen.
Re:A New Era for Mixed Reality on Monday April 22, 2024 @03:10PM (#40117703)
Yeah - while I've never dived too deeply, I have modded my 3DS a fair bit and didn't know what the OS was codenamed. I've always just seen it called 3DS OS, native firm, etc.
Re:Pico.sh – Hacker Labs on Monday April 22, 2024 @07:00AM (#40113129)
I have a thing to sell you, it's only $50 and you'll definitely like it; it's great.

I won't tell you what it is though - I'm not here to hold your hand.

It seems you and the GP agree, though, that gig work shouldn't be treated full-time employment, which was the topic at hand.
Re:The dangers of "decentralized" ID systems on Monday April 22, 2024 @05:03AM (#40112585)
I understand its shallow of me, but I stopped reading exactly here.

Your government needs to know who everybody is. That means illegal immigrants can't get drivers licenses, and that's kind of the point.

> Even IDs for undocumented people (such as Californian AB 60 driver’s licenses) require a foreign passport, national ID card or birth certificate, and can’t help people who have no state-issued identity documents at all.

> This existing ID system is harmful, inaccessible and a single point of failure

Necessity is the mother of invention :)
Re:Short Stack: World’s smallest Nintendo Wii on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @10:04PM (#40072232)
Is this seen as any less of a "Wii" than a trimmed board? What if parts were replaced with newer, functionally identical ones?

This is kind of a Wii ship of Theseus.

I must admit I'm honestly not impressed with my Framework. I'm sure it's decent for a Windows laptop - the repairability alone is certainly enough to set it apart there - but coming from a MacBook, everything's just.. worse.

Were MacBook upgrades not so expensive (all i want is 16GB!) and my love affair with NixOS, I'd probably have regretted buying one.

Re:Phanpy: A minimalistic opinionated Mastodon web client on Sunday April 14, 2024 @07:41PM (#40035537)
Minimal graphically, perhaps; the homepage alone downloaded and executed 96 separate JavaScript files.

It does look pretty though.

Sounds malicious.
I completely understand the desire to not implement such things, but I also understand why they exist.

Unfortunately, perhaps due to a mixture of elitism, protectionism, and market dominance, writing cross-platform software in any capacity, let alone cross platform software that requires low-level hardware access, Bluetooth, video, geolocation, etc., is far harder than it deserves to be, and using the web as an abstraction layer makes these things a million times easier.

edit: It's also far easier to distribute this stuff. I just want my video game controller working in slightly better order - I don't want to have to install some bluetooth library and then choose between an x86 Mac, ARM Mac, x86 Windows, x64 Windows, AppImage, deb, flatpak, .tar.gz, snap, my package manager (if it's even there), try install it, shit, it doesn't run on my distro, patch it, use it once, then uninstall it.

Re:Twenty years maintaining the WiX Toolset on Saturday April 06, 2024 @11:16AM (#39953011)
In what way do you feel Nix doesn't achieve this? Because software can still ultimately rely on system state?

I'd contend Nix is the best package management system yet, and while its certainly complex, much of that complexity only exists to hack around decades of bodges.

Re:FFmpeg 7.0 Released on Friday April 05, 2024 @05:05AM (#39940265)
I'm not sure I'd describe FFmpeg's CLI as "too good"
Not at all, I just have WebGL disabled by default.

I wasn't sure if the entire page was being rendered through it, that's all :)

Curious because your static landing page requires WebGL - what's your FE stack?
Re:Xr0 Makes C Safer than Rust on Thursday March 28, 2024 @07:48PM (#39858878)
Their claim that

    let s1 = String::from("hello");
    let s2 = s1;

    println!("{}, world!", s1);
is in fact safe code would suggest they indeed don't have much concern for thread safety.
