It's similar to how "Yookay" is now a word that has certain overtones that aren't conveyed by writing "UK" which is fewer letters.
Seeing this makes it hard to believe that I actually used iTerm2 for a few years back when I was still on macOS.

Heinlein's preferred title for this essay was "Our Noble, Essential Decency."

Most Filipinos cannot grok why Meta and its properties are a toxic waste dump, because they are part of the problem. They're addicted to those "data only" plans you're talking about. To them, Facebook is the internet. It's as simple as that, and because their culture is so docile and submissive, they don't think outside that very limited box.
If you have kids in school there, you can't keep up with school news, closings, etc. unless you're on Facebook. The schools, teachers, PTA, everything is on Facebook. All restaurants are on Facebook. Every single government entity and office is on Facebook. All DM traffic is on Messenger. Anybody selling anything is on Marketplace.
"What's so bad about that?" you might ask. It's this: in many cases, the only way you can contact any of these entities is on Facebook. When you try to explain to Filipinos that Facebook is a walled garden and a silo, they look at you as if smoke is coming out of their ears—they just can't comprehend data freedom and independence because these concepts are extremely impaired in their culture.
It's really depressing to think about these people's lives, but nobody should get too depressed because they don't know any better and are satisfied to be cattle. They'll happily use their device for absolutely nothing else but to flip between Facebook and Mobile Legends all day, every day, completely unaware that there's a whole other online world out there.
Facebook is dead among young peopleUnless they are in a developing country or a place where young people have very low agency, such as southeast Asia. For instance, in the Philippines, Facebook might as well be the internet. People there actually do believe FB is "the internet" and it's the only app they use on their phones.
Nextdoor is one of the most depressing social media sites I've ever seen. It's even more depressing than Facebook, if that's possible. It's a platform that seems to be built on the paranoia of lonely, socially isolated people.
They have been around forever. I registered my first domain from them sometime during the early internet era.

Did you tell him that one day, he can be the CEO of HTMX?
In all seriousness though, thanks for writing this, I found it helpful.
I
loved Google Wave. The first time I used it, I said out loud, "Wow, this really has possibilities."
The double-whammy of them killing Reader and Wave was super deflating when it came to my view of Google as a company.
I like Signal a lot. I would much rather use Signal than Discord, or :::shudder: Facebook (because in SE Asia a lot of people think that's the internet).
Looks like somebody got it. Do you remember what the squatter's terms were then, or was it simply not for sale at any price?
Correction: SCOTUS is not owned by any political party. Activists can claim whatever they want about the voting record of the justices, but SCOTUS is above petty politics.
That is one of my fave quotes from that book, and I use it often in situations just like this one. It's a shame they didn't include it at all in the movie!
Yep, I was just about to comment about this but you beat me to it. You know something's amiss when you have to use incognito mode in order for the site to look the way it's supposed to.
Still no confirmation or obituary.
So 12 hours later (or so), there's still no confirmation that he actually died.
...and the edit wars begin.
Packt? Avoid, avoid, avoid. This is true. Their stuff tends to be slop grenades thrown over the wall. And as you correctly point out, this was the case before generative AI.
My experience with Manning, OTOH, tends to be good. Most of the material I've seen from them was human-written.
As a bonus, you can become the president of HTMX.
A bigger question is why Last.fm did this, and why they don't do it again now that they're independent. I've been on Last.fm. since 2005 at least.

That is actually a smart move. You only have to learn SQL once to use it for 50 years.
But it's not at the top because of the AI ad copy.
