It's crazy how much of a marketing footprint they have considering they're only the 19/20th largest exchange

I think the chances of them seeing out their stadium sponsorship are near 0%

Re:Twitter plans to comply with Musk’s demands for data on Thursday June 09, 2022 @10:10PM (#31689202)
I found this tweet very naive and an indication that Musk really doesn't know what he's getting into.

I don't see how he thinks tweet content alone will be enough to verify the 5% of monthly monetizable users

The other poor indicator was his tweet about sampling _100_ of his own replies to detect bots. That's a horribly small sample and horrible selection bias

The firehose is terabytes a day, add storage + indexes and it's pretty far from "fitting on an USB stick" in order to analyze.

CH4 is the larger concern with natural gas

If you use anything but the Tor Browser on the Tor network you're going to stand out like a flare

Further - many of the privacy enhancements in Firefox, such as fingerprint protection, were adopted from the work on Tor Browser

Re:$1M bounty for details on Tether’s backing on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @11:30PM (#28926432)
This argument has been done to death. I personally find the conga line of analysts and hedge fund managers who appear on CNBC and talk up their book of shit picks a lot worse than the best short selling shops.

There are so many bad companies that are public today, they really need somebody nipping at their heels.

Re:Backblaze S-1 IPO on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @12:24AM (#28914854)
Carbonite - which is rarely mentioned on hn, had a $300M+ run-rate when they were acquired in 2019

I think brand awareness of Backblaze is insular - I remember Carbonite had the strategy of advertising on right-wing radio in the 00's which seems to have worked for them.

Re:Backblaze S-1 IPO on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @12:16AM (#28914812)
How did you ever think backing up 80TB for $60 a year was good for the company? You didn't need financial filings to know it wasn't.

Finney didn't mix British and American English the way Satoshi did in his writing.

Finney was also an experienced and much better developer[0] than Satoshi[1]

I was at the TC conference - wanted to buy the stock then!

Have bought since the IPO and am super bullish. It seems most Wall St analysts really don't understand the company or business.

You can have one ass and buy a thousand rolls of toilet paper. You can't have one car and buy a thousand liters of fuel.

This is pure supply shock

Wordpress with a bunch of plugins and a theme from themeforest. Figures.

I wouldn't be poking any bears had I been running that setup.

Not following up on that investment is a pretty strong signal

kudos to them for reclaiming it. always found it ironic that the alt-right co-opted the creation of trans women
If you use youtube-dl and haven't noticed that it hasn't been receiving updates it's worth aliasing youtube-dl with this project
Re:Ask HN: Reliability reports for USB flash drives? on Thursday August 12, 2021 @05:11AM (#28153897)
Thanks for the link - checking it out now

We want to ship the users a USB stick which they'll then plugin during setup and it'll save a (password protected) private key to it for long-term backup along with some metadata

So the goal would be that we can read the stick if plugged in again after a year, or two or three even after it has rattled around the bottom of a drawer or cabinet somewhere

I've found that it doesn't require much in terms of minimum unit order numbers to get a custom build - but I'd like to have a source of reliability data that is independent.

I'm contemplating doing a test lab ourselves - buying a bunch of keys and putting them through their paces, as there seems to be a real gap in comprehensive testing+benchmarks here

Ask HN: Reliability reports for USB flash drives?

Hi HN - I'm sure you're all familiar with the Backblaze HDD reliability reports. I am wondering if there is a similar report or just shared experience with USB thumb drives?I am working on a project where we need to buy a bunch of them for a specific application that requires the storage to be reliable (write once, read only in emergency and hopefully lasts)I'd be interested in hearing if there...

Thought his Scotland trip was a bit reckless. Ironically he caught covid last week.
Or they have become emboldened because there has been a vacuum in global moral leadership the past 4 years
I’ve also noticed an ironic overlap between the “solar is toxic” and “windmills can’t be recycled” crowd with being pro-nuclear
Re:Conspiracy: In Theory and Practice on Wednesday June 30, 2021 @01:08AM (#27685098)
Not to mention that the post-911 NSA surveillance program leaked to the NYTimes within a few years
> No country has run on a high percentage of wind/solar/battery for a long period of time.

Only because it's early. The first grid-scale battery only went online 3 years ago.

In that example (South Australia) you only have to look at this chart[0] to see what it done to grid renewable demand and where the trend is heading.

There are multiple GW more of additional battery coming online over the next few years

[0] https://opennem.org.au/stripes/sa1/?metric=renewablesProport...

You don't have to supply the entire grid demand - only smooth out the brownouts, which something the size of Hornsdale would likely be able to do for Costa Rica

Note that Hornsdale is also tiny compared to batteries currently being developed in Australia. The new battery in the Hunter will be 1200MW - which is enough to nullify the need for all gas-generated peaking capacity in that state
