I only found this post because I decided to check HN after getting HTTP 500 errors pulling some repos.

People don't hate them for trying new things, they hate them for making the new things the only option.

> That said ... putting part of your soul into machine format so you can put it on on the big shared machine using your personal machine and expecting that only other really truly quintessentially proper personal machines receive it and those soulless other machines don't ... is strange.

That's a mischaracterization of most people want. When I put out a bowl of candy for Halloween I'm fine with EVERYONE taking some candy. But these companies are the equivalent of the asshole that dumps the whole bowl into their bag.

This reminds me that I was recently using tracy to profile a program and found their own list of valid grievances, altough it's a bit more GNOME inflicted: https://github.com/wolfpld/tracy/issues/505#issuecomment-136...
I'm still surprised by how much inertia there is for Ghostery.

People should have stopped using that extension nearly a decade ago after being sold to an advertising company.

Or after they went closed-source.

Or after they were caught selling user info about blocked ads back to the advertisers so they could figure out how to avoid being blocked.

Or after they started showing their own advertisements to users.

In that example foo is the important aspect, so it should be the leading element:

  foo
  fooModified
Good to know. I think this should probably be it's own post

Re:I think Zig is hard but worth it on Thursday June 01, 2023 @10:03AM (#36151152)
Not only that, but zig makes linking against old glibc versions easy. For example, to make an x86_64 linux build linked against glibc 2.9 when using zig build all you have to do is pass:

  -Dtarget=x86_64-linux-gnu.2.9
Re:Reddit Data API Update: Changes to Pushshift Access on Monday May 01, 2023 @04:50PM (#35778958)
This is probably going to be Reddit's Digg moment for me. The sad thing is there isn't really a suitable replacement available. HN is the closest experience to early Reddit and I wouldn't be surprised if the site's traffic ramps up noticeably over the next couple months.
Re:A Eulogy for Dark Sky, a Data Visualization Masterpiece on Wednesday March 22, 2023 @04:41PM (#35266791)
https://merrysky.net/ comes pretty close!
I never said you shouldn't? I was only backing up the other commentor's claim since many people might think he's being hyperbolic rather than them overtly spelling it out on their site.
It should be noted that this isn't an exaggeration. For a long time they actually had in the sidebar on lemmy.ml that it was the main Marxist instance. I'd link an archive but the site's design makes every one I can find pull the new info.
Re:Open Source PC That Fits in Your Pocket on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @11:31AM (#33009138)
This may be a weird recommendation but the steam deck may be something to consider if your docks have a usb c connector.

It's nearly as powerful as my desktop, and I can't find any laptops/portaPCs with similar specs at that pricepoint.

Re:Ask HN: Discord banned me with no recourse on Thursday September 15, 2022 @12:18PM (#32854275)
They probably use the user's social graph. Taking all those precautions won't help if the new account just rejoins the same servers and talks to the same people as the banned account.
Sorry for being obtuse, but FF only allows me to put in a website to save passwords. How would I use this for an extra-browser application (steam for example)?
How do you manage passwords for things outside of the browser?
Re:Ask HN: I feel trapped in my job and city on Monday August 16, 2021 @03:56PM (#28202149)
So, in earnest, I don't see what the parent comment said that deserves them to be called an asshole. I actually see you calling them an asshole as much more rude than anything they said.

I figure there's some social implication that I'm missing. Would you mind breaking down the thought process for your reply?

Re:Git undo: We can do better on Monday June 21, 2021 @04:07PM (#27583710)
I feel like an outcast after reading all the comments here. I've never really had issues using git. I didn't realize so many people had trouble with it.
Re:Show HN: Find Subreddits for Your Niche on Wednesday May 26, 2021 @05:54PM (#27296593)
> I've used reddit for 10 years.

I believe that's why you think that. I feel that reddit started to go downhill after 2011, which was 10 years ago. So if that's when you joined you wouldn't have experienced what it was like before to feel that way.

It's because SMS works without data.

I doubt that most of the people that complain about SMS live in rural areas. It seems to be more of a US thing. The country is so large that unless you live in a city you just won't be able to get data reliably. This leaves SMS as the only form of phone communication that isn't a voice call.

Kallithea[0] has support for both. You might want to test it out and see if it's a good fit for your setup. I enjoyed working with it when when I used it.

What point are you trying to make?

Throwing around the n-word makes him a bigot, not right-wing.

Re:Pi-hole: A black hole for Internet advertisements on Thursday May 30, 2019 @12:20PM (#20052767)
If you're using pfsense, why not just use pfBlockerNG-dev?
While it supports tor, ZeroNet is more about decentralization than it is about anonymity.
