It is a shame to mix ad hominem with technical commentary

Ten generations, maybe.

Nuclear: hundreds

You are being silly!

You cannot predict t that any place on Earth will be stable, or stay local, over hundredsof millenia

Wishful thinking so you can make future generations pay for your consumption

There is no place on earth that is geological stable for the required time periods

We have no way to communicate the danger of the waste to people 55,000 years in the future

That greed, yours and mine, could create that dangerous pile of rubbish, that will be deadly to people who will never know of our existence

What astounding recklessness and hostility to the future

For current consumption

Unbelievable

I oppose nuclear for a very simple reason: there is no way to deal with the long term waste. Not just the small amount of waste from the fuel, but the reactor components.

The waste will burden hundreds of generations for millenia and the reason? Our current consumption

Such greed and disregard for following generations

Climate change is a minor problem in comparison

Good job! I despise advertising billboards.

Yes

> no way I am going to ship the code as written without actually reading through it

Interestingly agents can help, not replace, this process

These tools will make us more productive, they will disrupt (have disrupted) our industry, but they will not replace us because they cannot

Here we are again, thirty years after I was taught the "waterfall" paradigm at business school.

When asked about "customer satisfaction" we were told, awkwardly, that became "political"

The paradigm did not survive its encounter with reality, and I do not think this one will either

The "only" 175% increase in productivity is very impressive, and seems realistic to me, when you remove the chores of writing code (thank you to coding agents)

What you build is still very dependant on what you need, and you do not know that until you build it

It is a paradox only for the "waterfall" paradigm. We rejected it, in the 1990s for a reason

It did not work

Re:It's now official, tech is the new tobacco on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:49PM (#50279862)
Would it be terrible thing if the answers to all of your rhetorical questions was "yes"?

As we become more democratic we can control these greedy, careless and horrid people.

Ignoring negative externalities is such a twentieth century way to get rich.

Re:Emacs Turns 50 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:37PM (#50279663)
For me one of the main attractions of Emacs is I can use it in a terminal over a shitty wire, or on the desktop with all Gui bells and whistles.

Same in both places. Bliss

Re:Emacs Turns 50 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:28PM (#50279498)
I ran Emacs for ~25 years with almost no custom configuration. I could not be bothered, and the defaults were great

In the last decade I have started to add configuration. When GPT-3 became available, and I did not have to learn Elisp (another f%^&*n computer language - with no other use) I have extensively configured my Emacs

My point is it is very usable with no config

This will damage Meta's business. As the meme that they cannot be trusted spreads alternative methods of communication will revive, and start to flourish

Trust does matter. Hard to win, easier to loose, and no matter how big you are, how mean you seem, you can still sicken and die

> A lot of people are implying that people that object should leave the company

Another obvious point is: those computer programmers, and related professions, are now precarious employees.

Times have changed, there are redundant computists all over the place. Telling people they should leave the job that feeds their family because of short sighted management is cruel

The studies that showed rats would suck on a morphine feed until they got very sick had a floor which was demonstrated in the 1970s

apart from criminals for crime, politicians for corruption and grandma sending her savings to a scammer, who is using crypto?
Re:Musk Ordered Starlink Slowdown That Blindsided Ukraine on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @07:56PM (#50174329)
Yes. There should be a law against it....

I think the USA has laws against private citizens involving themselves in foreign policy

Edit: The Logan Act

Ironically the "Oxford comma" is American.

The Guardian is English, I am surprised they tolerate it

> obviously crows don’t understand us at all.

What is not obvious. Not at all.

Very interesting. I never heard of that. Where can I learn more about that?

USAnians: This is your tax dollars at work - blowing things up, destroying, killing. How far your republic has fallen - you should defend it

What a time to be alive.

You can change a contract before you sign it

Let the other side know, ensure you make the change clear and initial the change. 8f they sign the contract too, your change sticks

In my country, anyhow

At my (old) work we used Google Meet for meetings

I could not get audio on Firefox

It was the only site I ever found where I could not get audio and I suspect some Google malfeasance

When I initiated a meeting I used Jitsi, no such troubles

Re:Why we turn Left on Sunday October 11, 2026 @03:49PM (#50047120)
There is no bilinear I can see on this, no source, nothing.

But it is very cute - typical for our city's newspaper...

Planting trees as "carbon offsets" has been a hugely profitable rort

The idea that we can lock up land, forever, planted in trees to offset our consumption is blissfully naive

In New Zealand large swatches of land are being taken out of production, for a onetime big payment

It neglects two things:

1. Trees burn. Forests left untended for years choke with fuel and then catastrophically burn releasing all that carbon

2. We need the land. Future generations, this generation in a few years, will not be sympathetic to the vast swatches of unproductive land (that due to 1. above create costs)

We must stop producing carbon. It will mean many obscenely rich will be downgraded to wealthy. And the prospect of that is enough to burn the world

Why do either?

There are better, much better, choices.

A poster child for popularity!= quality

Yes

And the statements of the "doomers" tells us a lot about them, and nothing about the technology
