To me, passive income is to make content based sites, streamline traffic sources, paste ads and check back twice a month to see how it goes.

So, if I have 10 sites each making $100/month "passively", that's some nice passive income on the side.

Good to know the old school way still works. Kudos.
My parents were on Human OS, never tried to switch them to Linux. Have I missed something?
How do you find clients? Can your mantra work from someone outside US trying to offer exceptional services? :)
Everyone dies.

"you live only as long as the last person who remembers you"

I am in the process of moving my digital life to Notion. This includes my huge collection of bookmarks, 40+ browser tabs, dozen or so text files and content of some spreadsheets.

Here's my work in progress: https://imgur.com/a/LKY7RlP

Re:Ask HN: How do you organise your hard drive? on Sunday January 06, 2019 @04:18AM (#18837417)
My go to folders that are usually backed up.

/downloads - for all downloads under respective sub-folders like /media, /books, /software etc

/projects - personal projects

/freelance - for the freelance / consulting work with a sub-folder for each client

/business - accounts, taxes and stuff

/my-name - personal stuff including scanned documents, pictures etc

/archive - random stuff

I currently have lots of files on the Desktop which requires sorting out. Most of these are either text files with notes and ideas and some PDF. I am planning to move them into a system like Notion.so

Do you blog? It would be great, and beneficial for most of us, to read more about your thoughts and reflections :)

Have you checked her latest series, Mindhunter?
Re:Ask HN: How do you schedule your life? on Monday November 19, 2018 @01:32PM (#18488518)
I use Todoist to plan my life (and work), and try to stick to it.

If you are interested to know what is Todoist and how does it work, I have written a blog post on it. Have a read.

Built http://www.vitiligotreatmentinfo.com/ some time back. It generates income through Adsense and Amazon associates program. Planning to update the content whenever I have a few days off. So far, it is on auto-pilot.

I have experience of PHP (WordPress), Python, SEO and Content Marketing. I am working with Python since last year and am very much interested to have an intermediate level position to further enhance my Pythonic skills.
Sorry to hear about your ordeal. With my experience of working from both sides of the table, I can say for sure that you get what you pay for. Quality is not cheap. Companies in the west usually think that outsourcing to Asia and Eastern Europe would mean they can hire slave labor and pay peanuts for work that would cost an arm and a leg back home. As I said, you get what you pay for.

I am working with clients in the US, Europe and Australia. I know my limitations and never bid for work that me, or my team, can't deliver. This is why I have clients giving repeat work since last 7-8 years.

Most companies in my part of the world opt to hire a new employee on higher salary than given raise to existing person. Can't fathom the logic.
> Chinese assumptions when a Chinese-Canadian I was dating explained she always goes to busy restaurants on the assumption that a lot of customers means they have good food.

Same concept here in Pakistan [guess we Asians think alike ;) ] - we go to busy restaurants and shops assuming they are full because they meet the requirements (good food, low prices etc)

Re:Show HN: A simple interactive resume-making tool on Sunday August 12, 2018 @04:53PM (#17746362)
Although I have my resume in plain old MS Word, I'd love to automate it to create resumes on the go for various areas I apply to (web dev, SEO, content marketing etc)

Started my word processing with Wordstar (and spreadsheets with Lotus123). Those were the days.
Re:Ask HN: Depression and job on Saturday July 14, 2018 @12:47AM (#17528875)
Recently left a job because it was not aligning with my values. Have to rely on freelance projects for a while.

This is not a professional advice, but IMO if the job doesn't match your values, you feel depressed thinking about, and aren't in position to change anything - better walk away while you are sane enough to take the decision.

Best of luck with your future endeavors.

Wagtail looks good. Wonder what's the learning curve from someone coming from WordPress development background.
So, what's the WordPress equivalent in Python?
After procrastinating for quite some time, I finally picked up Python and fortunately got a web scraping assignment. Once I did the job, I thought to share the process online so that others may benefit from it. [0] and [1]

As I deep diver into the wonderful world of Python, I plan to document my Pythonic journey, noting that things of interest, the obstacles I come across and how I try to push my way through them.

Re:Ask HN: How to overcome fear? on Tuesday May 29, 2018 @02:23AM (#17176900)
I present you, the litany against fear..

"I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

---

from Frank Herbert's Dune series.

After working from home for a decade (own projects + freelancing), I have now taken on a full time role mainly because I wanted to change the scenario a bit.

My routine was very haphazard while I was working from home. Being an introvert and with a very small circle of friends, I was lagging on social activity - in general a pretty miserable situation.

Now, 15 days in the new routine and I already feel way disciplined as I have to sleep early to get early for the office. Also, staying away from home for 10 hours makes me feel eager to return back to family, and they seem more welcoming too :)

I may not continue this job (office politics, incompetent management) but I will try to find another day job or some sort of activity where I can spend at least 8-10 hours out of home.

Re:30 years later, QBasic is still the best on Saturday May 26, 2018 @08:42PM (#17164914)
I started my coding journey with GW-BASIC. My teacher used to make whole class do coding on paper, "dry running" the code before we go to the lab and sit in front of an actual computer. The process seemed to be an overkill initially but as I got better with it, I started to take interest in reviewing other people's codes and understanding code written in books without actually typing it in.
