Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:39AM (#50352561)
In order to lighten the administrative burden that occurs when society/state has a legitimate case to prevent offensive naming, society is likely to create an approve list.

Denmark did use to have "These and only these names" and they were written into the law (yes, there are pages and pages of Danish legislation that are just names), but now any non-offensive name is okay, and for administrative purposes, an "approved"-list is kept for easy reference to things that have already been, well, approved.

Absolutely not. Any company that moves from API to self hosting (Hello Revolut on the frontage) will publicize the savings, e.g, the actual cost vs API pricing. You might even do that if you start out self hosting.

Yes of course you can't name your child Shit Head. Is that a thing your government will print on a birth certificate?

Did you notice the words "funding phase"?
Re:Domain hacks with unusual Unicode characters (2018) on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:12AM (#50325890)
This has given me a lot of trouble with emails.

I have a domain that contains Nordic characters and it is a crapshoot if the email client will accept and send.

Meanwhile I have not encountered problems with http access.

Just clicked a random model on the site and it is licensed as beerware. If you like it and meet the author, you should buy them a beer.

Sounds like Roblox should open a open3dlab bar!

Re:The new iPad mini on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:24AM (#50256481)
Unlike the rest of the comments I actually do think this is the biggest upgrade to the iPad mini lineup.

Everything looks really good and way better than I’d expected.

Yes, the price increase sucks. I feel it is kinda warranted given the feature increase and current market. But only kinda.

Yes, 120hz would have been nice, but we all now Apple is gating that for their pro lineup. So no surprise.

Yes, the camera bump is stupid. An iPad that doesn’t lay flat is silly. But all the other I-devices has a big bump so again, no surprise.

I’ve been in the market for a mini and I am glad I hesitated.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I love that they are advertising minimum NITS and not just max!

I hadn’t heard that they are officially selling in the UAE.

But I did hear that parallel imported cyber trucks to UAE was a substantial part of US sales.

Yeah, the context is really vague. For the past few days log4j has been decompiling a Samsung TV and reporting on twitter the various spyware that is running

Non-native speaker here, but generally considered fluent:

I would write your example sentence. If pushed (like now) I would change it to “the form is submitted”

Re:How Block Blast harvests its players for ad money on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:23PM (#50224827)
Explain how the user makes the decision. It's not like they click "watch expensive add and gain 2 coins, or watch normal add for 1 coin" The user doesn't know what ad they are about to be shown and has no choice in getting and ad that can revive their play.
Re:How Block Blast harvests its players for ad money on Saturday October 24, 2026 @06:14AM (#50219797)
While lots of parts of the article isn’t written well, the subject and what is uncovered is very interesting.

That is why it is posted.

Re:How Block Blast harvests its players for ad money on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:41AM (#50219327)
I guess there’s just a lot I don’t know about this ad market. Is the high value ad only available to show for a limited time?
Re:How Block Blast harvests its players for ad money on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:29AM (#50219271)
I’m a bit unsure why they want to change gameplay based on the value of the ad.

It’s not like I get sucked into the game and decides to watch more expensive ads (which is the mechanic of golden berries or whatever)

As far as I understand the rule, high value players are more likely to die - but why?

> the kick and bass do not line up exactly. You never hear that in a contemporary pop mix anymore. That is not because musicians lost the ability to play together.

Why would losing the ability to play together cause the kick and bass to line up? This is the most forced claudism I've seen in a long time.

I’m on Tahoe and there are some menus in Apple applications without icons. I don’t know they have slowly been removing icons or it was always like that

Isn’t that an American thing? Like the Volks Wagons and Skoda seems like really good cars than many people in Europe drive, not to mention the storm of Chinese brands.

Re:The reverts will continue until morale improves on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:43PM (#50158483)
I’m not sure I like the headline.

A bunch of features that made it to beta turned out not to be in a state that could be made satisfactory for release time and so was reverted.

That seems to me to be the right thing to do. Unfortunate, but the right thing to do.

“[something] will continue until morale improves” is usually a sacastic dig at tone deaf and incompetent leadership (e.g, “firing will continue until morale improves”)

I don’t think that is fair to say here.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Sunday October 18, 2026 @06:11AM (#50139644)
Shareholders?

Who wouldn’t want to invest in a company that can achieve zero interest, risk free loans that might not even need to be paid back in full?

Why are people putting down these gigantic deposits for what is obviously vapor ware?

Re:The game industry is broken – can we fix it? on Sunday October 18, 2026 @02:42AM (#50138498)
Yeah, I agree with that take. It’s the fashion industry of computers. People will bend over backwards just to be a part of it.
I thought there was a big need for turbine reactors to keep the pace of AC.

Put at the same time it just seems solar is growing and growing and I’m wondering if there is a technical innovation that makes this less important now a days?

I’d say you can do a pretty good job with conditional random fields.

Re:Monte-Carlo Simulations on Saturday October 17, 2026 @04:18AM (#50129035)
One of my favourite stats / data science talks ever.

A few years after watching it for the first time I rewatched it and paused after every problem statement and tried implementing a “simple loops and basic operations” solution and failed almost every single time.

So be warned: he does make it look easy :)

Another poster here said the first thirty hours were great, but after 40 it started feeling repetitive.

If you change your perspective from “I’m not gonna spend 500 hours on this” to “30 hours of great gameplay for 30 bucks” maybe it isn’t so bad.

Is my understanding correct that they maintain a time called UT1, which is basically UTC if it continued to have leap seconds?
