This is something I wish everyone would read and learn from.

You can do so much good if you focus on what you can actually influence.

That has been a fun one to play a small role in. Great work by Marco and the team.
Whoa, I work at Crunchy Data. We focus on Postgres, but this K and KX family is wild. Reading about how it is used for Formula 1 data analytics
I wonder how much people who still write these languages are paid? I feel like it is one extreme or the other. You are rolling in it or you just don't know any better.

What is the craziest thing you've used a JSON column for?

What do you think of when you think of honest service?

Could not agree more! This is very well articulated and a point I think I'm going to add into the article.

Ouch, just starting to write more after only writing mostly code. Guess that makes me lean a little robotic lol
Re:Opinionated products breed passionate customers on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @08:13AM (#33968379)
Thanks for the feedback! I thing that section could definitely use a re-focus on what they specifically do to differentiate.
Re:Opinionated products breed passionate customers on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @08:11AM (#33968361)
Oooo good counter point. That is definitely the case. It makes for a fun challenge to take that on. If you're not funded though that can be a risk that is too dangerous.
Re:Opinionated products breed passionate customers on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @07:49AM (#33968181)
Fair points! For the second one, the point was actually they didn't have strong enough opinions so they are going to try strengthening them.

That being said you make a good argument. Will try and add in more detail to each example!

Re:Opinionated products breed passionate customers on Monday December 12, 2022 @10:28PM (#33964390)
Eh maybe cynical, but I would say you're right. There is a lot more nuance and detail to positioning yourself as a competitor to a company that already has huge market share. Sometimes having a small but important opinion is all you need, but sometimes you really have make a bet like your reference and really differentiate.
Re:Opinionated products breed passionate customers on Monday December 12, 2022 @10:13PM (#33964275)
I heard someone phrase it as "Your user wants to be the hero of the story" and if the opinions you have chosen align that is a good shortcut to getting there.

Thanks for those other references. Going to go check them out.

Re:Database Performance Optimization and Scaling in Rails on Friday December 09, 2022 @08:53AM (#33921206)
What kind of services do you like to manage all of these "optimizations"? Most developers would get into more trouble trying to setup something like is talked about here, so I assume most people's database provider helps?

Just saw this through Wes Bod recommend on Twitter. Great stuff!
Should be fixed now! We hit a rate limit a lot sooner than expected haha :)
Both? So for the tutorials they use a SQL initialization file stored in a GIST (our solution, but can be stored at any public storage url) and it loads that data and any other SQL setup commands in that file on startup to the database that exists in your local browser session only.
