Not to mention even by that standard, owning your house outright and having 10x its value in wealth is not "financial anxiety"

Re:The original sources of MS-DOS 1.25 and 2.0 on Saturday September 29, 2018 @10:00AM (#18100359)
Am I misremembering it as progman.ini or are those different files?
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018) on Monday September 03, 2018 @01:08PM (#17903682)
Typically people just upvote listings with salaries and they work their way to the top.
Re:The Quest for the Next Billion-Dollar Color on Thursday April 19, 2018 @10:56AM (#16876417)
This is always misreported. It's true that we can't distinguish between two adjacent rgb values (in most cases, on most displays...), which is where this comes from. But as you say, displays only cover a portion of the space.

The easiest example I usually give is with blacks-- computer monitors just can't reproduce the absence of light well.

Re:Tesla's $2.6B Musk Award Too Costly, Glass Lewis Says on Monday March 05, 2018 @10:37PM (#16526688)
But the cost to his ego for not meeting a milestone which receives even more publicity because of the big price tag is a big motivator (or at least one could argue)

So even if the utility of the funds isn't consequential, a package like this might be one if the few ways to further incentivize a CEO like Musk.

Re:Dow plunges 1000 points on Monday February 05, 2018 @04:43PM (#16312502)
But shifts in the market aren't independent random events. You can definitely find examples of dramatic, real shifts in valuation but in the vast majority of cases business value is created over time. That rate of growth might be slightly faster or slightly slower, but you can be certain it's within reasonable bounds. So when speculation or scare drives the price higher or lower, you can be sure it will find its way back.
Don't know about the knock-offs. But Ecovacs makes a line of roomba competitors that match up as well or better and cost 75% as much.
Probably not as expensive, but still much more expensive than it need be.

We've got a bunch of perverse incentives where it's cheaper for the patient to choose the option that's more expensive for the payer. Straightening those out would be a small first step, but complexities of the system and incumbent powers have made it pretty difficult.

Hey Arjun,

Congrats on your launch. You might want to disclose your interest in the product here, though.

Not all Americans agree, but your laws only apply to your country.

Spoilers: he doesn't actually use the output of the machine to power his site. Not that he couldn't...

This pops up on HN or reddit every 3 or 4 years. I want to say he made it in early 2000s? I was in the cube next to him at the time... my only brush with greatness.

Re:24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse on Monday July 10, 2017 @01:51PM (#14738162)
Heh, good to hear Google feels this pain, too. I work on the chromium codebase, and a 1 hour clean compile on a macbook pro seems optimistic.

Luckily ninja and ccache do a good job of meaning you only ever do that once (and rsync solved that problem for us). Not that a 20-second compile for a one line change is something I should be content with, but it's certainly workable.

You have examples? Every startup I've been with has been many years to profitability and the common names follow that pattern as well.

Some get traction, or maybe growth early on, but actual startups don't seem to "make money in a short amount of time"

Is Uber making profits in the US market?
Yeah, this argument really undermines his credibility. I do think we need a rational justification for the vote, as there has been some hysteria. If this direct response wasn't that, I don't think we'll get one
Re:Don't Fly During Ramadan (2013) on Saturday March 18, 2017 @11:55AM (#13901814)
I'm in the same position. And use the same day bag for train travel as my carry-on, meaning I've brought packs of razor blades on planes by accident more than once. (And a hunting knife once after a camping trip). The theater around keeping us safe is really about protecting us from non-whites
Re:Uber Driver Tip-Hustling Schemes on Thursday March 16, 2017 @02:34AM (#13883012)
Gender may play a role here. I (male), too, have never been solicited. My girlfriend uses uber much less frequently, but has had it happen a few times.
Re:Uber Driver Tip-Hustling Schemes on Thursday March 16, 2017 @02:29AM (#13882983)
I moved coasts and city sizes, riding uberX a lot in both. East coast big city was strictly back seat. Continued the practice west coast smaller town and had a couple drivers mention it was unusual when I asked.
Re:WhatsApp backdoor allows snooping on encrypted messages on Friday January 13, 2017 @07:31AM (#13390302)
I thought that was the whole point of end-to-end. That you don't need trust in the server because the messages are opaque. If this is an exploit that can be performed by a compromised server, it's very much relevant
Re:Harassment at Apple: A personal perspective on Friday December 16, 2016 @05:51PM (#13197634)
Actually, it's gal. Point blank. Not used as often, because the diminutive term passes for an alternative among many.
Re:To Know If the Election Was Hacked, Look at the Ballots on Wednesday November 23, 2016 @10:39AM (#13023316)
Can't touch screens give you a "receipt"? Particularly if it's validated by the voter, this removes the machine-failure hole where the optical scan fails for non-compromised reasons.
Re:Congratulations You’ve Been Fired on Saturday April 09, 2016 @11:56PM (#11464810)
Ed, I like that you've kept that perspective without having to had experience it. TBF I don't think it's been like that forever, but it's definitely taken on the role of the primary Good Engineer Burnout machine in Boston.

As an engineer and former Hubspotter, I think Lyons is pretty accurate, if filtered through a Main Street lens and embarrassingly self serving.
Re:Accidentally Quadratic on Thursday March 12, 2015 @08:37PM (#9195008)
Having given a lot of complexity interviews, I value a candidate who says, "This is O(n^2) and it seems like there's a faster way, but I can't see it" over one who stumbles on the right solution.

If they had to tell you your solution was slow, and a linear solution exists it might not be your inability to find it that made you mess up the interview. Get good at recognizing inefficient computation first, then worry about making it more efficient. On the job you can always consult a coworker/google, but if you don't know to do that you're going to ship some slow code.

Re:Skiplagged sued by United and Orbitz on Tuesday December 30, 2014 @12:50AM (#8813503)
Many companies trying to enter a market with a big markup (like travel) will do things like this. Find a differentiator, build a user base, and in the end become another comparison booking site that just passes people off to an agency for a big cut.

If you look back in the history of the big and small comparison sites, most started with (if the don't still operate) a gimmick but really are making their margins by being a step in the user's path to buying an airline ticket-- or better, a hotel reservation.

Re:Google Reports Better-Than-Seen Revenue Growth on Friday July 18, 2014 @08:38AM (#8052662)
As an advertiser, ads when you're the first result aren't a rip off. At that point you're not paying for the ad, you're paying so someone else doesn't get the ad over your results.
