More than two
Poor people eat more cheap carbs, hence fat. high fructose corn syrup and the way we make our bread also makes people fat
A new laptop isn't 3.5x more expensive, so I guess you just mean a memory upgrade?
Maybe it was EA from my shenanigans :) https://dirtforever.net
It always amazes me they don't hit a fist sized rock at that speed that just destroys it.

I wonder if switching to openbsd for my servers soon might be a good idea...

It's a vibe interview :)
Good time to start.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:51PM (#50307609)
Yeah a good portion of the population is PWM sensitive and OLED displays hurt their eyes. Macs are a bit better with the like 10khz modulation, but after a few days they still make my eyes feel like they're burning :/

Ask HN: Are you putting off hardware upgrades because of AI coding tools?

... or has it encouraged you to upgrade?I'm still using an 8th gen i7 (w/ linux) for most of my dev work. I was going to upgrade, but now I just run like 10 terminal tabs instead of IDEs. Concurrent builds even w/ Rust and Java usually aren't a big issue. I have several backup machines so if it dies, not a big deal. If I need to, I can just tell Claude "do all builds on and iterate via CI"The...

The best is when it's just two devs blindly sharing output from Claude back and forth during a major outage instead of USING THEIR BRAINS

I love my touchscreen thinkpad. For some things it's faster than the mouse. Scrolling is also nicer.

Will be fun to see how bad the PWM is on this display.

Haven't been able to use any newer macs :/

Re:Four Months of Zig on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @05:35PM (#50281230)
What do you mean wrong allocator? What if you want to use a different one (will it work?)
Re:Four Months of Zig on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:50AM (#50270387)
That's because in Zig that would be seen as a surprise side effect - the allocator is expected when the action is performed, not when it's "prepared", this way you know append() allocates. Otherwise it wouldn't be explicit which Array methods allocated.

The Odin way is useful, too. Depends on what you're building.

Re:I trained a 360M model to pretend to be a terminal on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:33PM (#50248688)
I'm aware. I've vibe coded some of the electron based tools I used into C++ apps, GB of memory to 50mb...

This! I was using this in like middle school in 2006 or so to run my sites. Cool to see it still works.
Re:I trained a 360M model to pretend to be a terminal on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:45AM (#50192023)
even my ten year old laptop browses the web fine ^_^

If I had to complain about any site/app it'd be datadog... each tab uses like 1gb in firefox.

Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:52AM (#50082525)
I have to admit, I don't recall this issue in any of Google's products. So they at least do that right.
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:51AM (#50082521)
That's the perfect amount of layout shifts.

Lol I have the same thoughts for ChatGPT. How much code are they writing, but the main chat UI moves around like 3 times during load so you constantly click the wrong buttons. How does this not infuriate anyone that works there? I've actually switched to claude's mobile site for more queries now.
Not sure if related but you can adjust how WSL releases virtual memory back to windows which will lower your memory usage
Re:How Fast is Python 3.15? on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:49AM (#50007315)
not everyone is writing simple web servers :) and if you are, then the rust is easy to read as it's simple. I also use django in some large projects, and don't see a future of my use of django really anymore. If I'm not feeling like rust is a great fit, I usually reach for Java with javalin.
Re:How Fast is Python 3.15? on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @10:20PM (#49987225)
Rust is nice to read because you can see from a function signature what it mutates

If you write slow rust, it's very easy to read, and still plenty fast.

Re:Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase on Sunday October 04, 2026 @11:21PM (#49960343)
Some projects exist just for our enjoyment of coding, so yeah I read the code on those.
Re:Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family on Sunday October 04, 2026 @11:20PM (#49960338)
I didn't either until I used all Samsung displays for a couple years and now I can't look at any of them for more than like 5mins without eye pain. I can only use IPS displays now. But it could be some kind of genetic issue or something.
Re:What is going on with ceiling fans on Sunday October 04, 2026 @11:19PM (#49960334)
My biggest issue is that a lot of them have cheap power supplies with terrible PWM, so they hurt my eyes. So my nightmare is basically finding a nice place to rent and realizing they put all these cheap fixtures in and then I can't spend more than like an hour in the house without feeling like someone is stabbing my retinas.
