Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @04:08PM (#50235558)
That's super cool. Not quite the same, but I created my own version of Remote Buddy, but with only the features I need, plus some extras like low battery alert and fixing a looooong standing bug with Remote Buddy where I'd need to restart there app every other day or so.

It's pure vibes, so buyer beware https://github.com/adriel/siri-remote-control This is "my" first Mac app, before this I'd only built PHP or web based apps. Pretty surprising how quick Claude could make it. I always thought Mac apps were really hard to build.

I see it more like the gold rush. OpenAI etc are selling the pickaxes.

Yes you can get make it big using LLMs, but it's still high risk, like starting any new company. It's lower risk to just sell the tools.

Re:AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:48PM (#50090733)
I recently decompiled Oregon Trail II, it's a pretty interesting experience, you get to learn a tonne about the game you used to play, and how it works under the hood. Came across a few bugs and unused assets too, which was cool to see.

I ended up coding coding up a fully interactive version stream on twitch. Unfortunately the Twitch extension I made to make it interactive is still pending review by Twitch, but I can manually add anything keen enough to the allow list. https://www.twitch.tv/medic_911/ (edit, I've switched the stream to use the existing twitch interactive ext, GreenHeat, so you can play the game now, it's just not optimised for this game like my ext is)

I also converted one of the existing decodes of Simtower out there into a native macOS app, which is pretty cool.

I find it (AI) really exciting, but also scary how this will shape the future. People still need to make money somehow to be able to spend it.

I do agree with this, but also, being an entrepreneur is a high risk venture, and most people fail at it. You only hear about the success stories.
Re:How to Build Wealth as a Career Person on Sunday October 11, 2026 @03:46PM (#50047082)
A fairly easy method is, when you get a pay-rise, setup an automatic payment that pulls out the extra money you now get, and auto invest it.

Otherwise you end up with what's called lifestyle creep, if you leave it into your bank account you will always find something to spend it on.

It does depend a bit on how much money you were making, but I'd guess it applies to most here.

That's so sad, first they ruin notepad, now Minesweeper too :(
Re:Triple-A Minesweeper on Saturday October 10, 2026 @05:43PM (#50037487)
They really hyped it up with all the name drops.

Sweep those mines!
Re:Claude Haiku 5.5 on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @07:27PM (#50000153)
Haha yeah, I saw that post when I looked into reverse engineering SimTower, that guy saved me so much time decompiling. Didn't get so lucky with Oregon Trail II, there are some very old github repo's with attempts, but none got very far.
Re:Claude Haiku 5.5 on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @06:50PM (#49999839)
I've done the same with some old games I used to play, SimTower and Oregon Trail II, both fully decompiled and now running natively on modern macOS.

I'm going to try create an interactive twitch stream where viewers can play the game through the stream and other non-player viewers can trigger events in the game via points.

Crazy time we live in.

Edit, you come to really understand the game in the process, and why things happen and how to better play the game. And occasionally come across bugs, dev assets, assets never used, or assets all coded up, but code never triggered.

Yeah, please have knobs. I don't mind a bit of screen, but all the frequent stuff I want in knobs.
Turns out, there was a hole in the bag.
Re:Will There Be a 7G? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @10:08AM (#49684181)
At least in NZ around when they closed 2G the govt created a group of some kind which went around and put up a bunch of 4G towers in more remote areas, the key thing was the towers went owned on xyz company, so everyone who visits the area regardless of the telco they use get the same great signal. *having said that, it's still sad 2G was closed, it had truly impressive coverage, with few cell towered required.

Is how it should be country wide in my opinion. Way too many towers up everywhere just so xyz company can get coverage there. Leaving no 1 company to have the "best" coverage.

Re:Will There Be a 7G? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @10:00AM (#49684105)
Same in NZ. I don't need the extra speed of 5G if it's even available and would rather have the extra battery life.
Same same. I love Mac, and macOS, but as a server, macOS is terrible, and bloated, and a pain to run docker/podman.
Me too. I've got an M3 Mac Mini running as a linux server with parallels, but it has a weird NIC bug that crashes the mini every few weeks, keen to get of macOS and it's buggy NIC driver. (really don't want to send it into an Apple repair shop, there are non local here, it's a whole thing)

Can't wait to get Linux running on it native.

Were you a Mac/Windows or Linux user? Personally I was an early adopter of Firefox and it worked great on Windows, but on Mac for a long stretch of time it was significantly slower than other Mac first browsers. Firefox also has this weird non-standard (for Mac) scrolling for the longest time, and the UI was dated.

Most of these things were not true on the Windows side. At least not to the same degree.

Same. I found Firefox was fast on Windows at the time, but on Mac it was so slow (compared to Chrome), and had weird non-native scrolling for the longest time. As a Mac user it felt like they developed for Windows, and occasionally do some work on the Mac app too.
Re:Creepy Crawlies on Sunday August 30, 2026 @04:38PM (#49502521)
I think he means, get cloudflare to cache your content, so the traffic never reaches your servers to begin with. Assuming your sites content is cacheable by cloudflare. I agree it's a sad state of affairs if you have to rely on a 3rd party..

Maybe I'm not understanding how many requests at a time bots are sending to kernel.org (or how larger kernel is), but couldn't they have a local cache system too, where all it has to do it serve up dumb .html pages, needing next to no compute cycles.

Re:Should you stop cracking your knuckles? on Sunday August 09, 2026 @04:50PM (#49235724)
Same things for me, but I was already "normal" weight, but fixed my lower back pain was... exercising. Back exercises, not just walking. Go to a gym and get a plan made out.

You don't need to become the next hulk. If you sit all day, as you get older you can get away with less and less, at some point you need to start exercising (and not just 1 type, a range), your bones don't just hole up your body on their own, building muscle around them fixes a surprising amount of Aches and pains you get as you age.

Maybe it's just me but I always saw gym people are the crazy bodybuilder people, but in this modern day in age most people need some level of gym (a lot of it you can do at home too with minimal gear).

*Talking to people sedentary lower back pain people.

Re:Hollywood Stopped Making Movies in Hollywood on Monday August 03, 2026 @05:50PM (#49161934)
Most of the Stargate series were filmed in Canada too. If you pay attention you'll realise the planets they visit all look like Canadian forest, or an old quarry filming location.
The rate goes up and down with inflation, high inflation, high interest - low inflation, low interest.

But even then, yes some banks still offer no or 0.5% accounts.. because they can, and many people can't be bothered to figure out a better option, or "trust" there bank and don't want to move. (or the bank has high interest account, but make it complicated to use)

Re:Writing by hand is good for your brain on Thursday July 23, 2026 @06:45PM (#49029086)
I think like many things, it's not universally true. At least for me I'm a really slow writer (and poor spelling), that if I were to hand write notes in a lecture, I'd focus on writing and miss half of what is said, and fall behind to the point that something I was copying from the board gets wiped off.

Maybe typing isn't ideal, but it's the better of the 2 options for me.

Re:Writing by hand is good for your brain on Thursday July 23, 2026 @06:36PM (#49028984)
Me too! Those library card were more interesting than the book sometimes.
Re:Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @06:55PM (#49014576)
Finally! We need more of this. It did happen sometimes in the past, but not nearly as often as it should.
I feel like this is the right way to do it. Especially if you're using your own credits. Unless it's obnoxiously long task.

So often it'll cut off just as it's about to finish.

I wish Apple would update there built in TTS model (on Mac). In this day and age, it's quality is terrible.

Usualy doesn't work. Needs a specific type of dog, and the right device. Most of the ones sold online are scams.
