It's likely they're referring to the effect outdoor cats have on bird populations. They're credited with the the extinction of 63 species: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5056110/
Oh I did this too a few years ago. Except I used gifs instead of jpegs, and then wrote a Ruby wrapper for backing up files to Flickr. Blog post about it here: https://namwen.svbtle.com/hoardr
Re:Dumber phone on Tuesday April 24, 2018 @11:23AM (#16913341)
I adhere to a lot of these rules myself and have recently noticed peers doing the same.

Another I'd add that really makes the phone boring is putting it in grayscale mode. On iOS: Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Color Filters > Grayscale. Then you can set the Accessibility Shortcut to Color Filters, and when you triple click the home button your phone goes grayscale.

I don't have it on 24/7, but do enable it any time I feel myself getting sucked in too frequently.

That could have been the original intent, and they may still use that argument, but if so it needs to be squared up with the fact that they relentlessly try and entice drivers to keep driving longer and farther. See: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/04/02/technology/ub...

Find My iPhone has a feature called Activation Lock which matches up with what you're describing: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201365

The phone won't do anything until the person who turned on the lock turns it off again.
