Adderall raises one's blood pressure to a dangerous level. It is smarter to avoid such drugs and at most rely on caffeine. Work smartly, not like a maniac.
Re:Peter Thiel on what works at work (2014) on Saturday May 02, 2015 @12:11PM (#9477531)
"You try to hire people you could become friends with" is a profoundly stupid maxim.

People who come from conservative and religious societies will always be pressured by friends to not make new friends who are of different ethnicities.

Thiel is basically ensuring each company Will become a little Island of segregation and this is what I have seen in the bay area: companies that are 90% Indian, 90% Chinese, or 90% white guys.

Re:Stanford – The Get Rich University (2012) on Saturday May 02, 2015 @11:52AM (#9477474)
In my experience talking with Stanford alums and just walking around the Stanford campus most people there appear to be already rich. It is not Berkeley, where regular people go.
Re:Death to C on Saturday May 02, 2015 @11:00AM (#9477300)
You're missing a key point. What makes Linux usable is that it has numerous drivers written for it... written in C. An OS's core is not supremely difficult to write. But the drivers are... Much specialized knowledge is required.
Re:Death to C on Saturday May 02, 2015 @10:48AM (#9477258)
Someone to come up with a list of 10 reforms for C, nail it to Kernighan's or Ritchie's front door, and start a new language sect.
Re:Death to C on Saturday May 02, 2015 @10:39AM (#9477222)
And are people expected to download the compiler executable from Google's website?

Given that the CIA recently bragged that they were able to put spyware in iOS apps because they have somehow exploited Xcode on developers' machines, one has to think about the implications of downloading executables from companies that are complicit in spying.

Just because I do something safe e.g. I compiled the compiler myself, it is the larger implication of everyone else not doing it right that is the concern.

If it's owned by a corporation that participates in the PRISM program I would not trust them.
Re:Death to C on Saturday May 02, 2015 @10:32AM (#9477192)
That's Jon Evans' specialty FYI
Re:Death to C on Saturday May 02, 2015 @10:28AM (#9477182)
MISRA is a bloated mess from the accounts I've seen, no doubt to encourage paying for it. If u remove all the filler and padding the substantial part may be 40 rules.

There should be a new C that obviates the substantial parts of MISRA.

Re:Death to C on Saturday May 02, 2015 @10:24AM (#9477163)
Jon Evans, master complainer. C could be improved, but the amount of important C code out there (Linux...) militates against adopting a new C. Is someone going to pay to switch over the code base?

Ultimately if a newer, tighter, safer C is going to arise it must come fron the GCC or LLVM people.

Go: owned by google so it's a no-go.

Try putting your phone in a metal box like this: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10031018&N=&Ntt...
Re:The Problem with Mobile Phones on Friday May 01, 2015 @01:26AM (#9469653)
Some phones have baseband processors that can remain powered up even when the phone is officially off. No malware is required.
Re:Tesla Motors Livestream on Friday May 01, 2015 @12:38AM (#9469474)
I've watched maybe 7 videos about him. Musk is too eager to throw employees under the bus.

It is this reason alone why I'd never buy a tesla.

These outsourcing companies and the organizations that hire them practice a kind of diversity that benefits only the 1%, which they accomplish by throwing American workers under the bus.

Who still uses Facebook?
Bill Gates could quite possibly be a moron. World government would only concentrate corruption in one place, out of the reach of common people like us. Such a government would be by the corporations for the corporations-- even more than Washington DC is today.
Re:The Engineer’s Lament on Tuesday April 28, 2015 @12:06AM (#9450489)
It's a little annoying to see the author retell the story of Toyota's prius acceleration problem as if it were a defect with the peddle.

We know now that it was a problem with spaghetti code firmware, lack of testing, & poor system design.

See here http://www.edn.com/design/automotive/4423428/Toyota-s-killer...

I bought the 13 and I added a 24 inch ultra wide LG 2560x1080 monitor and this setup is nearly perfect.

The only disciplines that are supposed to be called sciences are those that use the scientific method.
Re:Six works of Computer Science-Fiction on Monday April 27, 2015 @04:53PM (#9449008)
No
Re:Six works of Computer Science-Fiction on Monday April 27, 2015 @04:52PM (#9449002)
In other words, the science part is bogus. It should be called Computing Studies. That way they could keep the acronym CS which everyone seems to like.

Computer science is about as useful a term as polymorphism (borrowed from biology). It serves to put lipstick on a pig.

Re:Six works of Computer Science-Fiction on Monday April 27, 2015 @02:42PM (#9448316)
Computing Studies
Google should be thinking in terms of switching android away from Java toward either Objective-C, which is very popular, or C++. This would be a very large and costly change but the longer they wait the higher the costs rise. Furthermore the fact that Google is not using Objective-C means that two teams are always needed for mobile development in most companies... Whereas if they use Objective-C one team could code for both android and iOS.

Alas like most people who work in tech Googlers have trouble questioning assumptions.

Re:Six works of Computer Science-Fiction on Monday April 27, 2015 @01:19PM (#9447712)
Is computer science really a science? Is there any part of the computer science community (academia or otherwise) that is using the scientific method and experimentation?
To me the key question is whether these checks are anonymous. If not -- if Firefox or a plug-in is sending a unique ID, than any advertiser or government agency could pay for that tracking information and then your privacy would be toast, at least until you can reset that ID.
Re:What If Students Could Fire Their Professors? on Monday April 27, 2015 @12:29PM (#9447321)
I can see it now, it will be like Lord of the Flies... Or perhaps profs will feel obliged to give out A's to keep their jobs.

Starwho?
