Re:Bugs I've Filed on Browsers on Monday March 04, 2024 @04:33AM (#39588553)
For what it's worth I do the exact same thing (although not on Mac so I haven't encountered this bug), so not too niche I suppose!

Bemoaning people maximizing terminals - what a weird hill to die on.

Nobody ever talked about beginnings. The question is, even if the universe always was, why does it exist? It wouldn't be impossible for there to be nothing and never have been anything.

Why does this only talk about lyrics?

Well that's probably because Indian accents are not present as a category and everyone is forced into the US/UK/AU categories?

Fun fact: the unusual way of saying eighty in French ("four twenties") actually came about through the local contact with Celtic languages! I'm linguistic terms this is called "substratum influence"

Not men, businesses. And businesses can and should be coerced to serve the people.
You do in some countries

If getting access to your email is all it takes for someone to empty your bank account, you need to find a different bank.

I can tell you that in my passport, my name appears in two different places and it's spelled differently been them.

Also, a lot of people in the world don't have passports.

What does time horizon mean?

Your description had me curious, the picture had me laughing out loud
I especially liked the section about notifications in this article:

> In their article The Psychology of Notifications, Ximena Vengochea and Nir Eyal call notifications “the Pavlovian bell of the 21st century.” For app designers and users alike, this is a double-edged sword. While notifications are exciting and a way to engage users repeatedly, they’re also numbing. When half of your notifications aren’t relevant and you’re waiting for an important reply, it can be like getting phone calls from everyone but the pizza delivery guy. > [...] > A research paper published by Florida State University tested students’ reactions to a simple game against a group that played the same game but had audible notifications distracting them as they went. Even though the participants never acted on the notifications, the test indicated that the notification sounds or vibrations distracted them noticeably, and just as much as a phone call would.

Stuff like this is the reason that I've had notifications turned off on my phone for years now. I still see them when I check my phone "manually" (which I do more often than necessary anyway, sign of the times), but they don't make a sound or make the screen turn on. I think it's definitely helped me.

WhatsApp and Chrome is apples and oranges - not using WhatsApp comes at a social cost (especially in countries like Germany and India where almost everyone uses it) because you can no longer communicate with other WhatsApp users or participate in group chats.

Not using Chrome comes with zero cost - you can use the same websites everyone else is using, just use Firefox.

This particular attack is actually not a concern if you're using fish (or zsh for that matter I think), as it will not execute pasted content without an additional pressing of the enter key.

Even just removing it from that country's app store would mean 99% of people who might have used it otherwise won't use it. It doesn't need to be Impossible for the policy to be successful.

Re:When Work Didn’t Follow You Home on Thursday July 13, 2023 @12:41PM (#36712082)
Counterpoint, I work in an international company where teams in Europe often need to liaise with teams in the US. The policy is: if it needs to wait, it waits. If it can't wait, you need to reorganize your teams' responsibilities so that those who are reliant on each other are timezone-aligned.
I second that. The time it took me from when I started to learn programming to getting paid for a project was just a little over year, and three years to steady pay (i.e. employment).

In contrast, I've been making music for over ten years of my life and have gotten paid a handful of times.

This is just "capitalism breeds innovation" with extra steps, and the answer remains No.

What if you're on the go and only have a phone available? I reckon this is intended for quick experiments, not in depth debugging.
Re:The Case Against Travel on Saturday June 24, 2023 @07:44AM (#36457843)
Except people rarely ever do get a real insight into other people's lives and culture from just travelling, do they? You're not sharing your life with the locals, you're not friends, you're just walking around the city centre looking at sights and eating in restaurants. You're not going to work, commuting, having coffee with friends, going to house parties, etc
