News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

They are USB on the machines we use. That said, that’s not a concern to me.

The machine also prints a paper tally that goes with it to verify. We used sealed bags so they can’t be messed with in transit. They tabulate the results and compare it to the total from the tape. Personally, I wish there was a hash of the results that would make it simple to say “yep, that’s the same” but practically that’s not necessary.

A second copy of the receipt goes back separately with the paper ballots. Same sealing and chain of custody handoffs.

I like the electronic ballot marking device. I can understand the argument that they’re not worth the cost, though.

This is great, congrats on shipping it!

I like the interface but for the life of me I think I should be able to go back a period (“last week”). I think a week starts on Monday?

The majority of DNC delegates are normal people and local elected officials, elected by local districts and state delegations.

This organization tries to rank online media political sources by their bias.

It’s not totally objective, but at least relatively can help you.

Plenty. Most recent was a volleyball rotation generator so I could hand out customized rotation sheets to every player. When I make a change, I can generate all new sheets by updating names & positions.
Re:Raspberry Pi 4 on Monday June 24, 2019 @10:36AM (#20263909)
We've used a RPi 3B+ for a couple years as a home desktop and it's been great for general browsing, email, youtube.

Velcro it to the back of a HD TV and it can sit anywhere.

From Olathe. Grew up here. Ate at that restaurant last week, even.

I don't find our level of racism any different than when I travel elsewhere in the US. There are bigoted people everywhere, but most people around here just want to raise a family and hang out with their neighbors, whatever color they are.

If you're in Kansas City, my company name is databasically and my first name is wes and I use a dot com. Shoot, if you're not in KC; email me and let me know how I can help.
Re:End Daylight Savings on Saturday January 12, 2013 @03:00AM (#5046923)
My method of killing DST would be to accept it year round. I would much rather have the extra time at the end of the day, after work.

I'm not sure if we can just unilaterally say "All our timezones are +1 now, forever" though.

Re:Why Your Company Should Sponsor Tech Conferences on Monday December 17, 2012 @02:52PM (#4933991)
Both of those "why become a sponsor" articles are a great read; right in line with this article.

The sponsor list down the side of the page is totally awesome, too. Congrats on some serious sponsor firepower.

Serious question: what would it take for a US citizen to move to Brazil and work there? I don't have any idea about the visa intricacies.
We have a lot of biotech & life science investment here, too.

Our Ruby talent pool lost some talent with the Google acquisition and subsequent moving of a local company, but we're back up to 40 at our Ruby group meetings twice a month. We have the Ruby Midwest conference and other developer conferences. Lots of opportunities to meet and hack with other developers.

I would totally offer up my basement, but I'm just outside of the first round of fiber rollouts.

Cool idea, be awesome to see how it goes.

Me too. I was expecting some physics of the curveball.

Swaddling is fantastic. I just used an oversized sheet after I got the hang of it.

Get a toy doll and practice. Took me a couple hours to get the hang of it.

Re:Set your heart on an MBA? Don't bother on Thursday February 03, 2011 @01:30AM (#2173894)
I read "I'm starting my own MBA reading club and you're not invited" [ http://www.kadavy.net/blog/posts/i-started-a-diy-mba-group-y...] and that's where I got the idea from. Do it locally, face-to-face discussion over a lunch every X weeks.

Invite local business owners to come and speak so you're building relationships between the group and the outside business community.

I hadn't considered a remote group, meet over Skype, or just via forum. If you're interested, shoot me an email and we'll go from there.

Re:Set your heart on an MBA? Don't bother on Wednesday February 02, 2011 @03:18PM (#2171925)
I've been dreaming about finding other business owners that want to do a Do-It-Yourself MBA ( http://personalmba.com/manifesto/) -like reading program and discussion group, but have yet to make the time to organize such a thing.

I've considered getting either my MBA or my CPA, but didn't find the return on investment to be worth it.

Re:The alternative game system for truly hands-on play on Wednesday January 05, 2011 @01:49PM (#2071960)
I've been waiting for these to come out since the TED video (http://www.ted.com/talks/david_merrill_demos_siftables_the_s...).

I put in my pre-order and can't wait for them. I've been trying to think about what I would do with a Siftables API, just for fun.

Two to my zip code, but we do have lots of Garmin employees here in town.
Re:Mirrored display face-to-face pair programming setup on Friday December 10, 2010 @12:16AM (#1990724)
Seems like the tables don't need to be so deep, which would help use less space. Maybe not, though,

I do something similar when I'm pairing, but we just sit on opposite sides of a conference room table. The offset is key so you're not constantly leaning over to see the other person.

Re:The Day I Bought $15,000 From the US Mint on Friday December 10, 2010 @12:05AM (#1990703)
I love the golden dollars and I'd be ok with getting rid of paper dollars entirely because coins last a LOT longer.

I'm not sure what certain uh, industries, that deal in single bills a lot would do, though.

You know, for a fresh design for my personal blog, or another take on something, $15 is great.

Would I use it for client work? Uh, no.

What's the worst that could happen? He gets too busy? He flames out after a couple weeks? Either way he got some experience and learned some stuff and built a portfolio and got paid to do it.

Way more upside than downside.

With the new multiple sign in, I use my gmail account as primary, then sign into my other two gApps accounts (personal, work). That way, all my analytics, web history, and such remain under my [primary] gmail account and I can still open multiple Gmails with different accounts in them.

I've found a little lag in gmail to apps features, but not long enough that I've worried about it.
