Isn't Facebook's MO that they do basically whatever they want and when called out for shady stuff they issue some sincere apology and try again?

He's about right but it's not really a ground breaking observation.

The author was lucky to have a half decent experience on the train given the appalling state and cost of our rail network.

I think I might be Finnish
Re:Why I’m Using a Flip Phone on Friday July 27, 2018 @08:15AM (#17625372)
All this seems needlessly complicated just to avoid having even a simple phone.
Re:How Amazon Can Blow Up Asset Management on Wednesday March 07, 2018 @05:21AM (#16535450)
They all pretty much start with the disclaimer "I was given this for free but that didn't influence my 5* amazing review that follows"
Re:Make Medium Readable Again on Monday March 05, 2018 @07:59AM (#16520709)
I'm pretty sure Medium at one point was a decent low level solution to the problem they set out to solve - it just doesn't scale to the multi million/billion dollar solution the founders wanted.
Re:Spotify Form F-1 on Thursday March 01, 2018 @04:20AM (#16490646)
I've found more recently that the discovery playlist that I also loved is churning up more and more of the same stuff now. Not even a good mix of songs from artists I definitely like - just a very small set of songs from them.

I do love it though, generally speaking although being a heavy daily user I'm not sure the discovery part is actually as good as it initially appears.

Re:Google AMP Is a Threat to the Open Web on Wednesday February 21, 2018 @04:13AM (#16428047)
I think there's an element of them forcing an entirely new Google standard (then favouring it in their results) on to something they could just as easily punish (slow sites) directly.

Slow sites can be sped up quite often with small optimisations and improvements and those improvements can be guided by Google tools but instead they're forcing their own new format in the name of speed.

Re:WhatTheFont – Shazam for Fonts on Wednesday November 01, 2017 @09:36AM (#15600986)
I just tried a couple of photos of websites from my monitor and it's really nowhere near close to identifying. One of them was roboto from the play store which I'd have hoped would be an easy one.

Does it struggle with photos of screens in particular?

Re:How Booking.com manipulates users on Thursday September 21, 2017 @05:33AM (#15301833)
Showed me the same results (price wise, order was different) in Chrome Incognito on Win 10 desktop and Android.

Re:Google to add 'news feed' to website and app on Thursday July 20, 2017 @02:21AM (#14810399)
I can't wait for them to add a stories UI so I can see what my friends are searching for while I'm searching.
Re:Material Design Color Tool on Tuesday April 11, 2017 @08:57AM (#14087217)
They still use their mighty data to show me ads for things I've literally just bought, I do sometimes wonder if all data is even.
While I commend the drive to switch to career it is a little scary that it's apparently so easy to become a $100k engineer in 5 months in SF.

Reading HN from the other side of the pond in UK sometimes I get the feeling that there's more money than sense flying around the startup world and that this sort of switch to work in this startup ecosystem is why there are so many dreadfully poor app ideas that should never see the light of day being funded with millions of dollars of VC cash.

I may just have a slightly distorted view of startup world but is it really that easy to score a highly paid job with so little experience because they're so desperate for bodies who can write some code or is OP someone very talented who's just rolled with it and got very lucky?

I only read the first slide.
Re:Show HN: The Hacker News Button on Wednesday May 29, 2013 @11:42AM (#5786881)
It makes it practical though since so many people seem to think linking off to HN instead of having comments is a decent way of handling discussion.

Me too, really looking forward to meeting some of the other speakers and attendees.
Re:Calling bullshit on 'mobile strategy' on Thursday January 17, 2013 @09:25AM (#5072772)
Read the article, thought it was a bit wooly and vague. Agreed with this comment which points out the obvious nicely.

All nicely wrapped up.
