This is great. Wish list: expand this or make separate website to track prices for Chipotle, Chick-Fil-A, In-N-Outs, McDonalds and other fast food chains.

Chipotle Tacos are much better IMO. You can get 2 Tacos for about $8-$9 on West Coast.

Re:Software Engineers Say the Job Market Is Getting Much Worse
on Wednesday January 10, 2024 @11:03PM (#38947419)
Having been laid off myself in engineering leadership position towards end of 2022 so I can totally correlate this. I had FAANG offer but it was pulled back due to budget cuts towards end of 2022. I continued to interview. Got another offer in April 2023 but that was pulled back too because of indecision by leadership for more than a month. I then found a IC contracting role in the middle of 2023. The job market is even more tough for leadership positions. Also there are lot of people being silently laid off from smaller companies every month which doesn’t show up at trackers at layoffs.fyi.

Re:More Americans Are Ending Up Homeless–At a Record Rate
on Monday August 14, 2023 @03:47PM (#37125906)
That is one instrument to deincentivizing accumulation of more than 1 property. Increasing supply is definitely another one but as I mentioned that earlier most of those rental units get acquired by richer landlords. One can also make those investment property mortgages much higher.
Re:More Americans Are Ending Up Homeless–At a Record Rate
on Monday August 14, 2023 @02:46PM (#37124986)
I think one of the cause is we don’t tax the landlords higher for the investment property. That’s why lot of upper middle class and HNIs have lot of investment properties around the country. It’s so easy to buy and rent out properties without even seeing them ever. One of my friend who works at Microsoft in Seattle, owns 4 properties around US(3 in WA and 1 in TX). It was so easy to get cheap mortgages between 2017-21 if you had 100-200k lying around.
Re:Run Every Day
on Tuesday August 01, 2023 @02:29PM (#36960275)
This article doesn’t explain why running is so good for you. Running can be good and provides some benefits to your heart, lung and joint health. Good for your mind if you are doing it in moderation. My heart readings improved significantly year over year based on lab results. But if you do too much running it can affect your mental and physical health adversely too.

Re:Writing an Engineering Strategy
on Sunday February 19, 2023 @03:04PM (#34861267)
I like Will Larson’s most of the articles but this one seems all over the place. Shouldn’t engineering strategy be defined by
1. Customer’s needs first and then
2. Internal stakeholders like developers, marketing, product, analytics etc. needs
3. Company values and principles could be the next guiding principle.
I think if you work backwards engineering strategy should become more clear. That’s the part I found strongly missing in that article.

Re:Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
on Thursday February 09, 2023 @12:51PM (#34728105)
I’m based in SF Bay Area and I was laid off from my Engineering Management position in October. I had MAANG offer at the time which took about 2-3 months when the process started in July. But as they started reviewing budgets it was cancelled even though Recruiter verbally agreed on the number. Then I interviewed with several companies in Oct-Dec. One startup was willing to proceed with VP/Director level offer but the President said he needs to wait until January to get it approved from the board. But they never got back to me. The interviews dried up since mid-Dec and I am still looking. I’m also on H1B so that makes it more challenging.

Sometime back one of mentors mentioned about https://theenergyproject.com/. I haven't gone through the program myself but the way he summarized is, important aspect of managing your work is also managing your energy levels through the day/week/year. Identify the work which requires more energy(mental/physical) and get that done first. Later on identify the things which give you more motivation or joy which in turn provide more energy. These could include going out for a walk or having 1:1 or having conversation with someone. Again this will vary depending on if you are introvert or extrovert.

Twitter still being unprofitable cannot afford to loose Trump from it's network so whatever he says on twitter is basically gonna get a pass from them. This is really sad. I think twitter should just scrap it's arbitrary posting guidelines and allow all the content. In few years Twitter is gonna degenerate into network of trash talkers and will loose many of it's sane users.
Re:New Research on How Ride-Hailing Impacts Travel Behavior

The study claims that "After using ride-hailing, the average net change in transit use is a 6% reduction among
Americans in major cities." Where is the supporting data or facts to back those claims? Being located in Bay Area I know for a fact that BART ridership is down this year due to variety of reasons. May be Ride-sharing companies is one of the reason. But I don't see specific data from different cities mentioned in the study.

I think it's also quite likely that the psychiatrist's patients are searching for her profile just to checkout how's her personal life on FB which might give FB some clue as these people might know each other hence a friend suggestion. I do that sometimes to see some of my not-so-close friends.
