Re:Rust's Sneaky Deadlock With `if let` Blocks on Tuesday November 12, 2024 @08:38PM (#42122040)
Would be much more expensive to implement. RwLocks are basically Atomics wrapping a pointer and have no knowledge of who has acquired the lock
Re:Ractor – a Rust Actor Framework on Sunday November 03, 2024 @03:30PM (#42035893)
I personally find actors in rust to be too much of a head ache. You might as well use Erlang (or elixir) and do your heaving lifting in rust with somethign like https://github.com/rusterlium/rustler
Re:Apple's macOS Sequoia lets you snap windows into position on Monday October 21, 2024 @12:05PM (#41905573)
Try putting one window on the left half and one on the right half. There will be a pixel gap between them in the center and one on the top between the window and the top bar. 1 does not equal 0

Even with the setting to turn them off, they are too large

It’s better. But not great. The margins are far too large, and resizing is pretty poor.

Guess what? It’s still boring
Okay, but maybe they deserve it? Hard for me to tell since I’m not an octopus

Wow… this sucks
Re:Gnome Files: A detailed UI examination on Saturday September 07, 2024 @10:43PM (#41477842)
I have actually had more problems with the Mac OS finder then I have the gnome one, and all of my problems stem from answering the question “how do I go up a directory from where I am?” Never bothered to figure out the actual right way. Might be easy. But hard to figure out
Re:Make sports betting taboo again on Thursday August 22, 2024 @11:42AM (#41321529)
I didn’t say that we should do nothing. What I said is we should do things within a framework that allows people who engage in activities in non harmful ways to continue to do those activities, and to have those people fund helping people who can’t.

That funding can include sweeping out illegal gambling operations that prey on vulnerable people. No one would mind taking them out of there are legal options available to them.

Re:Make sports betting taboo again on Thursday August 22, 2024 @10:46AM (#41320882)
A human can become addicted to literally any behavior. The solution isn’t to make illegal the behaviors that can be harmful when done in excess, it is to provide addiction counseling resources at no cost funded by the people who can control themselves. And higher amounts of control, like allowing users to ban themselves, or indicators that flag users as problem gamblers.

Making the behaviors illegal doesn’t actually help people you mention, it just drives them to less safe avenues and jail. Hardly help if you ask me.

People also have a right to discover for themselves that something is dangerous to them personally. It sucks, but not everyone is going to know off the bat that they have alcoholic tendencies.

I’m not sure why you’re bringing up Steam, but they do sell software on it
You need money to do that
Re:Proton launches its own version of Google Docs on Wednesday July 03, 2024 @09:19AM (#40865703)
The connection is encryption, and having all of these services paid for and therefore have better support. I really like protonpass so I was happy to see that I already pay for it
This article finally got me to purchase an Apple TV, because it reminded of the terrible banner ads they added to the fire tv
The OP article claims increased lifespan and aging populations is the explanation
Re:Perpetual Stew on Tuesday March 26, 2024 @09:15PM (#39834725)
The shocking thing to me about this is that the picture for the article was apparently taken a less than a block away from my apartment
I think this might be the tipping point for me to start looking for alternatives in the search engine space
Re:Introducing GNOME 46, "Kathmandu" on Wednesday March 20, 2024 @02:20PM (#39770203)
Gnome has a built in extension called “Applications Menu” that is just that.

I don’t really use it that much. I find opening search and typing what I want much faster. Or I use the dock

Can you provide some sources on the Paris city’s budget and debt? I couldn’t find anything on it. France’s debt looks roughly linear, which I imagine would support Paris a lot

You put up your sell order in 100 milliseconds. The market then reacts as long as it takes to react. Stocks don't instantly settle
So? That doesn't make this insider trading
And if that information that is unknown drives the stock price down, _then_ he is insider trading
How is it insider trading? He sold the stock after the material became public knowledge. He didn't have any insider information
