ETHICAL short sellers. Reddit is after naked short sellers. Big difference.
Re:Why we should end the data economy on Friday June 04, 2021 @02:54PM (#27397553)
Someone previously illustrated sceneries where the algorithm hiccupped on your data and erroneously labeled you as a pedophile and/or terrorist (at the same time!).

If you think about it, bad ML (or your words: "...ML isn't magic.") is just as bad, if not worse, than infallible ML.

"I still despise it..." - you seriously did not understand that statement? And you took it to mean his own INTERNALIZED struggle?
In addition to all you said, you mentioned your car...do they also pay you for your commute time? Of course not.

Say you have a 1hr each way...2 hours/day, 5 days/week, 48 weeks/year, $100/hr: $100 * 2 * 5 * 48 = $48,000. WFH literally just saved you $48k of billable time.

Buying a 4k monitor (that you can also use for non-work activities) on your own dime is probably reasonable.

I do this too! It's especially great when I'm starting to doze but don't want a full nap...I can hop up and do a set of whatever. After that, I'm good to go!
There is an excellent lecture on this topic:

"Jonathan Haidt: The Coddling of the American Mind" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b3Ob4CK4Xs (a little over an hour)

The lecture includes multiple studies and actual science. Basically scientifically illustrating what many people feel intuitively - that somehow society has become obtusely frail.

Can you take your Bitcoin out of Robinhood? Of course not.

You do not actually own any Bitcoin at Robinhood.

There's the "middleman" in your scenario without a middleman...just a different kind of middleman.

Re:Overkill objects for everyday life on Sunday May 30, 2021 @04:31PM (#27336460)
That sounds...really wasteful.

Perhaps a happy medium? Maybe not $1500 Damascus knife, but maybe a nice Wüsthof so you're not throwing so much out, and damaging the environment.

The actual "smoking gun" is three levels deep:

1) https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2021/6/252840-collusion-rings... then 2) https://medium.com/@tnvijayk/potential-organized-fraud-in-ac... then 3) https://huixiangvoice.medium.com/evidence-put-doubts-on-the-...

Not to try and dissuade this internet mob...but instead of doing the whole internet-mob-get-eyeballs-to-my-blog-by-rehashing-someone-elses-blog thing, get to basics and be precise like a scientist would be. Examples. Forensics. Details.

That's a curious take.

Re:Twitter confirms Twitter Blue on Friday May 28, 2021 @11:57AM (#27316964)
If all they are doing is allowing color changes and slight UI tweaks (and the undo button), why not take a page from online gaming's playbook and just sell cosmetics?

There is pretty much no limit to what could be sold as a cosmetic...add "flair" to the twitter bird (googly eyes, hats, etc) ($5.99 - $25.99)...make circle logo on your profile an octagon ($1.99), a triangle ($1.25)...with a blue border for an extra $.99....etc

I bet they'd make gobs more than a $2.99/mo.

But that is the whole point of the parent. Who is to say it is a "propaganda effort"? FB/TW/YT? Why? How would they know (unless they were part of that effort, ironically)?

"Whenever someone like me gets called a "white supremacist" for defending someone's right to post a job opportunity without being subject to attack, it devalues a term whose meaning is indispensable to retain so that genuine instances of racism can be identified and rightfully addressed."

Wow, this is basically what all us "crazy alt-right" people have been worried was going to happen since day 1.

Second and third order consequences are not always that hard to foresee.

I find it fascinating that Hollywood is doubling down on this type of writing after it's been shown to drive away audiences.
I'm just trying to wrap my head around how skewed a poll taken by "a diversity consultancy" would conclude that: "... two-thirds of adults in America want to be able to discuss racial-justice issues at work."
But isn't that the grandparent's whole point?

If you can't take being called "soft" or a "wussy", you ARE...and need to toughen up...ignore trite insults, and be able to withstand the torrents of potential backlash/hardships (from customers, competitors, whatever externalities...or even from internal sources, eg: partners - you WILL fight).

Re:Introverts can make great leaders (2018) on Sunday May 16, 2021 @09:33AM (#27173594)
Perhaps...but then you've mis-categorized the person as an introvert when they are actually socially awkward or, as you say, they have: "...poor social skills and lack of impact."

There are both introverts and extroverts who have "poor social skills and lack of impact".

Noisy extroverts who don't know when to stop talking is one example off the top of my head.

No one, other than the city of NY, will have the full node.

So in this use-case there is no distributed network in the first place. And never will be.

Re:Why do we buy into the 'cult' of overwork? on Sunday May 09, 2021 @07:18PM (#27100793)
Sarcasm or not, this is how life is.

Hang with people who are one trait and you tend to become that trait. Hang with people who are not, and you'll tend not to be either.

If you want to "chill", hang with those people. If you want to "work hard", hang with those people.

I'm not judging, I'm just saying. Choose your circle of friends wisely.

Wow I was about to gush about how much I LOVE my NP compared to my old crappy, braindead MDs. I could share stories of how bad MDs are...and the horrors of insurance.

She is sharp as a whip. Smarter and more motivated than ANY MD I've EVER had. Anything she doesn't know about, she researches (on her own time/dime). She prescribes everything - dirt cheap. Lets me text/call/email ANY time. Refers me to a specialist for anything beyond her expertise (just like any MD would!) DIRT CHEAP (eg: MRI for $300, scheduled within a day or two down the street). A single, cheap, monthly fee ($65/mo!) lets me see her any time day and night, ask anything, discuss as long as I like...and I do all these things! No MD going through standard insurance would allow anything even remotely similar.

...I could go on...

imo the NP model is FAR superior than the traditional insurance+MD crap model we have right now. It's one of those things "they" don't want people learning about since it'll crush the traditional way of doing things once people realize how amazing that model is.

Yes I have basic insurance since it's required. And, just in case - she obviously doesn't have an emergency room.

Re:Crazy New Ideas on Thursday May 06, 2021 @09:00AM (#27062530)
"They are betting that PC/Laptop/Mobile hardware will stagnate from this point on."

Me playing the devils advocate...

Perhaps not //forever//, but perhaps for the next few years (enough for them to make some good money).

Why? Chip shortage, GPU shortage.

Anecdotally, I just bought a computer for $7500, that, two years ago would have cost about $2500 (granted, it is the new tech, but even so, new tech of this tier two years ago would have been approx. $2500). On top of that, have to wait two months for it to be assembled. (ouch)

I agree with you that speed will probably not stop increasing, but if prices continue to go up, or even just level off, few people will be able to afford the new tech.

That being said, would I invest in Mighty? No since I agree with you in general....and agree with you about the zero privacy issue...very regressive position for someone like PG imo.
