The countries that have "developed" have increased pressures on less developed nations, and caused or exacerbated problemsin the areas they have exploited in order to develop.

This Is It, by Alan Watts also describes some of the same feelings. I picked it up recently and am still trying to digest the concepts he describes.
Thank you for this. I've been dealing with these issues more than usual lately and this was helpful to read.
You can bring food into a movie theater without too much trouble in my experience.
Re:Chicxulub Google Search Easter Egg on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @09:00AM (#34595050)
It would be cool to learn if there are other easter eggs like this in Google search. Is there a list somewhere?

[edit] Yes! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_Easter_eggs

I noticed the "only one on sale" thing too. I suspect the author meant it was the only one for sale at the store, period, not that it was the only one with a sale/discounted price.
Re:Why Mathematicians Study Knots on Monday October 31, 2022 @06:54PM (#33414459)
I saw "The Ashley Book of Knots" mentioned on another post, and it has some interesting history of knots. Especially that the introduction of books led to sailors spending more time not knotting.
I wonder if there's some link to rate of footsteps? The step rate of an approaching/retreating human or animal would have been relevant to survival.
> Today at another McDonald's I observed the entire bootstrap process and can confirm that the kiosk indeed is responsible for installing “custom firmware” on the card reader

If this part is correct, it seems like an attacker could compromise the reader itself.

It's also supported in Azure Devops wikis
Re:Why are some egg yolks so orange? on Sunday April 17, 2022 @09:38AM (#31060715)
We just started smelling/tasting some fishy flavor with eggs from one of our hens. We suspected flaxseed in the feed we were giving, and switching feeds seems to have fixed it.

Brown egg layers are apparently more prone to this issue

If Musk fails, are there likely to be any lasting effects to Twitter or more generally to the market?
Re:Ask HN: Who has given up looking for work? on Thursday April 14, 2022 @11:36AM (#31028337)
Failing to answer Leetcode questions doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. Many will be difficult without spending a lot of time practicing similar problems.

If they were "easy"-ish Leetcode questions, it might not be a bad idea to practice some basics.

Many interviewers are looking at your thought process and ability to transfer your ideas into, not just whether or not you solved the problem.

OT, but this era of WP website was quite nice looking and readable. Refreshing!
Your username also tells me you have gotten over the "holy shit WTF is Kubernetes" part.

I think I'm headed somewhere similar shortly. Hopefully I have the same success as you!

I'm not sure what 'all consuming' would mean exactly. But excess complexity might also indicate fragility, in which case breaking an entire system/subsystem might come fairly easily
Re:Full Throttle on Saturday July 17, 2021 @08:43AM (#27865376)
Never got around to playing it, but I probably spent 10+ hours trying to get the demo to run on the family PC. Unsuccessfully.
The picture at the top of the article has the caption "Setting Windows 11 to one of its dark themes also darkens the background of the Settings app—but not the background of most traditional apps, like Resource Monitor".

This doesn't seem like news.. Dark theme has been in Win 10 for a while and didn't apply to old style apps. Did they specifically promise to do this?

That's my number one gripe. Searching message history is absolutely terrible.
Re:Sublime Text on Friday June 25, 2021 @01:11PM (#27633575)
This was oddly fun.. It inspired me to keep writing a stream of thought that I normally wouldn't do anything like:

hello, my name is sublime text, and I don't know what I'm doing. I have to keep typing to listen to this song I'm not sure I actually like.. But I have to at least get to the chorus, I guess. Paused for a few seconds there.. Guess I'll keep going. Still going. Well, this isn't so bad since I don't listen the radio anymore and hear this twice a day. Matter of fact I was thinking of going back and listening to some Sublime albums just a few days ago. Hope this doesn't send me on a full-day exploration of 90s music. Ok chorus has started, almost there, then I'll stop, I think. Ok, yep thats it done now :)

Re:Burnout Is Real on Friday June 25, 2021 @11:11AM (#27631773)
Former smoker here, and I miss the time to relax/reset, plus the social aspect. Lately I've been taking small breaks to just sit outside, and this has some of the same benefits for me.
This was very helpful. Thank you

Hell is exactly how I would describe this.

Well-made, cool video though!

Great! Legacy underground mazes full of decomposing human heads are such a pain.
Re:A walk in nature is better than microdosing on Tuesday June 08, 2021 @03:11PM (#27439499)
This reads like one of those cookie cutter mass produced "Article about a Thing" you find when searching for almost anything these days
Re:Replacing grass lawns with native plants on Friday June 04, 2021 @11:44AM (#27394783)
Imagining a backyard infested with turtles made my day :)

But I totally agree with you.

F1 definitely does NOT keep things balanced. Though they do try, but they have to balanced engagement from fans, well-funded teams, and teams with less financial backing.
I disagree. Nerfing classes/weapons in games still gives everyone the same toolset to work with, and more skilled players can still excel with the different toolset.

To use another games analogy, this is more like "rubber-banding" in racing games, where the pack is artificially caught up to the leader.
