The fact that snap's web3 team being cut is one of the listed examples is pretty comical IMHO.
Re:Ask HN: What's THE way to setup a OS X dev machine 2015? on Wednesday May 06, 2015 @04:40PM (#9501644)
Homebrew and pretty much anything else that lets the *NIX of OS X shine through.

Check out Github's tools as they seem to use OS X heavily.

Homebrew - http://brew.sh/

Also the ~/.osx dotfiles in this repo (https://github.com/mathiasbynens/dotfiles) are quite handy especially space order locking. That used to drive me mad.

Finally Amethyst (https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst) is still a lil buggy but so nice to have. If you want to go the 'more OS X route' check out BetterTouchTool instead.

defunkt (https://github.com/defunkt), feross (https://github.com/feross), holman (https://github.com/holman), samaaron (https://github.com/samaaron), & indirect (https://github.com/indirect) among others all doing cool stuff (and are cool people).
Re:Ask HN: Isn't networking usually a waste of time? on Monday April 06, 2015 @11:05AM (#9328404)
Networking definitely has real value. I see two main advantages. One, some of the people you meet can help you on the spot (i.e. they fill a need you presently had). Second, adding smart, talented people to your network raises the chance that when you next need someone to fill a role, or someone asks you if you do, you not only have someone, but you have someone good.

However, don't get carried away. The scene is huge and not every event is worth going to. In addition, going to events is only a compliment to the real work.

Re:Ask HN: Internships for a 13-year-old? on Friday April 03, 2015 @12:48PM (#9316909)
I would advise continuing to work on skills using the insane amount of online resources available. While also working to build up an open-source profile of side-projects. Side projects not only show that you truly do enjoy developing, but they also provide a great tangible means for exemplifying your skills. You have a great jump on learning these skills but because of your age you will need tangible proof that you have real skill. Because of this I think open-source side projects are a perfect fit. They're fun, hone your skills, and prove you can create (and maintain, document, etc.) a software system.

Oh and I can't agree enough with all the people saying savor the time. I can remember countless days where I was 'bored' stiff all day, while nowadays I find myself dreaming of being able to not have to sleep daily so I could fit in even more hours for projects, both personal and professional.

I firmly believe that as you age your perceived notion of time passing only accelerates.

Re:How Betty, Who Is 89, Gets Her News on Wednesday March 11, 2015 @08:14PM (#9188379)
There's a project called Saulify being worked on over at Assembly which re-formats articles for a cleaner, responsive design.

I'd be interested in forking it or a similar project to better adapt it to this use case.

On a related note a friend of mine is the co-founder of a company aiming to fix this very problem. Their approach is portal software that allows users to interact with common services through a more simplistic, and better age-targeted service. Check it out here[1].

I use the default 'spaces' along with Amethyst (https://github.com/ianyh/Amethyst). Works quite well.

Any chance on open-sourcing this?

Is this just 5s or does it work on a 5 as well?
Re:Ask HN: Encrypted Chat, on-the-fly? on Saturday March 29, 2014 @06:58PM (#7494338)
https://crypto.cat/ is a potential solution to this problem, add Tor and you can consider yourself fairly safe.
There are two plugins they currently offer. One blocks sites from tracking you, while the other allows you to search using your favorite search engine with added security (no ip logging, more anonymity, etc.).

For more information checkout the Github project page for each project below.
