Yes, for these microcontroller-type chips, ahead-of-time compilation would be definitely more suitable. WAMR probably supports it, but you can also to it via WASM2C, easily. I prefer not depending on WAMR, it is very bloated

Correct. I didn't create the tagline, sorry

Yes, Wasm3 also targets Cortex-M4 and even Cortex-M0 :)

Wasm3 happily runs on ESP32, it provides a fully dynamic wasm runtime. But it's much slower than AOT compiled native code, obviously.

This is exactly what wasm2mpy does for MicroPython: Dynamically loaded, AOT-compiled WASM modules

Yes, we're talking about Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040) here.
Not the Linux-based SBCs (Single Board Computers)

For esp32 I'd recommend https://github.com/wasm3/embedded-wasm-apps
It obviously depends on your needs/goals.
P.S. I'm also the author of wasm3

I don't think .pyc files can contain native code, but .mpy can! And that's exactly what I'm using here:
- compile any language to wasm
- translate wasm to C99
- use the native target toolchain to compile C99 to .mpy
- run that on the device

Thanks for the feedback.
I'll improve the README based on your inputs. I was focused on the actual research.
Overall, this allows writing code in statically compiled languages and running it (fast) on embedded systems with MicroPython.
MicroPython itself is comparatively slow, and this provides tools to deliver more demanding software (AI, signal processing, etc).

With this approach, wasm is compiled to native code. Translating that to Python is in theory possible, but very impractical.

Looks like the migration to CodeMirror 6 is complete!
Check out the new look and feel: https://viper-ide.org/
Needs more polishing though...

LMK if anything doesn't work or can be improved.
File uploading / downloading is planned further down the road.

Yes, 100%. Besides, the feature analysis was not entirely correct.
Re:Show HN: ViperIDE – An Innovative MicroPython IDE for Web and Mobile

You don't need to build it, it's hosted on https://viper-ide.org
Also, this is Vanilla JS, so just opening the HTML file locally also works :)
P.S. I just realized I'm using the older CodeMirror 5 component for the editor. Migrating to CM6 will require the use of bundler.
The good news on the othe hand, the editor will get much better.

Yes this is my side-project. The core of the UI was created by ChatGPT and then polished :)
Which basic features are missing from the editor?

You're comparing "both sides" as equal, however please consider that this is an unprovoked agression against Ukraine. Russians invaded the foreign territory and are killing and torturing civilians.
On day 2, they sent dozens of mobile crematoriums towards my city. Yes, they were prepared to burn "non-conformist" civilians.
Ukrainians, on the other hand, just don't want to be wiped out.
Re:Wasm3 entering a minimal maintenance phase

I see it similarly. It's not easy, both for refugees and those who are still here in Ukraine. However, everyone has a unique story and reasons to see it in a specific light.
I know a LOT of people who are hiding, and at the same are doing everything they can, donate and develop high-tech stuff for UAF.
The world isn't black/white, however, we know for sure that we MUST do everything so that the russia is stopped and this happens "never again".
Re:Wasm3 entering a minimal maintenance phase
on Tuesday December 19, 2023 @03:21AM (#38693156)
Hard to tell. It's a full (and dynamic) range. In general the life is mostly the same. Except we need to hide from missiles and drones, help UAF. Some of us have an additional burden of killіng the russkies ;)
Oh, we also need to know the location of the closest nuclear shelter.

Undoubtedly. The building itself needs to be deconstructed (as we found out later)

I admire what you're doing! Ukraine still stands because of you and people like you.
Be sure, that despite having a destroyed house and maintaining Wasm3 I'm still resourceful enough to:
- donate money
- donate skills
- coordinate multiple mil-tech research groups
- run own business
- raise 2 kids
- ...
Cheers!

At the moment we're in a safe place, for quite some time already.
