I'm not sure you would find censorship of terms like "Uighur are not in camps" on Twitter and Facebook. Because as per US foreign policy, "denying" those claims is not allowed

You can use Privacy.com to generate a one-time use credit card number that lets you use any fake address you want. It will charge properly and you can set limit

This is why I always enter a fake address in CA :)
Re:In India, smartphones and cheap data are giving women a voice on Wednesday January 06, 2021 @11:35AM (#25659248)
If you’ve visited India, you wouldn’t be surprised. Most women do stay home and take care of kids

And it’s really hard work btw, cooking and looking after the house and kids. They’re definitely not just “sitting home and drinking tea.”

Re:Jack Ma Is Missing on Wednesday January 06, 2021 @11:31AM (#25659196)
So you talked to Jack Ma? Lol you read a bunch random speculation about how he’s missing when there’s no proof. The. Try to construct a narrative from it
Re:In India, smartphones and cheap data are giving women a voice on Wednesday January 06, 2021 @11:30AM (#25659184)
You’re wrong. Every country would have 99% labor participation rate if you count those. It’s not meaningful

The fact is only 20% of women are not getting paid for their labor. It’s a sign of huge lack of development progress

Re:In India, smartphones and cheap data are giving women a voice on Wednesday January 06, 2021 @11:29AM (#25659169)
Labor participation would be 99% in all countries. What’s your point?

The 20% to 60% is meant to demonstrate female inequality in India, because most of them are working at home for zero pay and low social status. Whereas in more developed countries, women get paid to work in industries.

USSR is a failed civilization because they couldn’t steer good government policies. China is way different. Don’t equate the two just because they’re both “communists”

That’s like equating the US and India

But you seemed so sure that you were right

Re:Jack Ma Is Missing on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:39PM (#25640967)
How do you know he’s even in trouble? Because a bunch of western journalists haven’t seen him personally for a few weeks?
Re:Jack Ma Is Missing on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:38PM (#25640952)
So did Martin Skrehli. Your point? Publicly fighting with regulators is a bad idea, I’m anywhere in the world, o matter how rich you are
Re:Jack Ma has not been seen in public for two months on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:35PM (#25640924)
Because you’ve been looking at China your entire life reading western media and unable to comprehend there may be a different and better ideology

Therefore you reduce this situation to “he said bad thing, therefore he got jailed, therefore whoever jailed him is a bad thing”

Repeat, amplify, and you got yourself a brainwash

Re:Jack Ma Is Missing on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:32PM (#25640886)
That is completely false, and I bet from someone who has never worked professional nor lived in China

Corruption is one of the thing that will end your career, even your life. Things like smuggling drugs, creating fake products that endanger lives, will get you executed.

Jack didn’t even go against the CCP. He criticized the financial regulators for not allowing innovation.

Weird that people desperately want this to be “China Bad Government” vs the Good Billionare Jack. But it’s more akin to an FCC vs Musk battle

Re:Jack Ma Is Missing on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:26PM (#25640825)
That’s good, everyone should play by the same rule. The rich billionaires should know they can be squashed at any time if they bend the rules
Re:Jack Ma Is Missing on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:25PM (#25640811)
Strange that people are making a huge deal out of this. How’s he missing? To whom? He’s not the CEO of Alibaba anymore and doesn’t have to appear in any events

He’s a billionaire, who’s in trouble with regulators for public ally flouting their regulations. Maybe it’s a good idea to stfu for a few months until it’s settled.

The sentiments from some people on HN are so weird about this. Everyone wants to screw the big bad tech companies for having so much monopolies on what we do, until China does it then it’s “oh no big bad government takes down billionaire.”

Unbelievable

Re:Ask HN: Earning 100k EUR in Berlin? on Sunday December 20, 2020 @11:23AM (#25487309)
That's wild... As much as I love to complain about the bay area, being able to go upwards of $500k for an individual contributor keeps me here. Even taking into account of increased medical costs and crappy public transport, still very much worth it. Don't think there's any place it on Earth that pays this much
This is a topic as old as time. I never get why people “complain” about what other people pay for things at a price they themself seem silly. It doesn’t impact you. It’s their money. If they feel they can have an advantage in the long term investing in companies at a high valuation, then sure

Everything thinks what they’re building is worth a lot of money but get jealous when they see high valuations from others :)

Not really. India really has very little clout in today’s digital economy. There’s a ton of users, but very little money to be made there since it’s a relatively poor country
The interesting thing is that these platforms come and go. One year it’s Vine, another year it’s Snap, now it’s TikTok. ByteDance bought musically for $1B in 2017 and turned it into Tok.

3 years later, it’s grown like crazy because it’s the latest fad and would be smart for them to cash out before the next new thing hits

The whole divestment thing is probably a godsend for ByteDance, “forcing” them to liquidate their stake, but in reality let’s them cash out on an overhyped app that’s easy to copy

Must be laughing all the way to the bank

ByteDance bought Musically for $1B in 2017 and turned it into TikTok. Three years later they are “forced” to divest it for $50B. They’re laughing their asses off to the bank
Sorry I think you've drank the koolaid. There's no judicial oversight when it comes to national security. They'll always be able to find judges that are sympathetic to the FBI/CIA's cause

Just curious, how does it compare to H1N1 currently? Think it will be more or less contained?

It's also painfully obvious to anyone who lived in large urban centers in US that certain races steal statistically more than other races.

Do you make a comment about that? No, because you have no context and you'll likely be shunned in polite society. You have a James Damore syndrome and probably will not help you in your career

Re:Chinese Thesis Ghostwriting Scandal Reveals Huge Gray Market on Saturday September 22, 2018 @08:01PM (#18048658)
It's interesting blatant stereotypes about Asian and Asian Americans are thrown around like it's acceptable. Would you ever make statements like "it's cultural acceptable for black community to condone thefts and petty crimes, and politicians won't do anythign because it's inconvenient?"

Just because statistics reveal a uptick for one group, does not make it acceptable for you to generalize. It's a racist remark, just so you understand the unconscious bias

Barcelona
Lol so the bar is asking for independence? Native Americans no longer advocate independence because they've been suppressed for for several generations, they're culture are effectively dead. Same thing will probably happen in China in 50-100 years
Why do you view those as occupied nations? What about Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, and Puerto Rico?
