Check out Total Spaces (https://totalspaces.binaryage.com/) for Mac. I use this with dual monitors and love that each monitor can have its own virtual desktop.

I have my left monitor as a communications hub. It has only one virtual screen. I also keep my browser there.

I have a 3x3 grid on the right hand monitor.

Re:The Benefits of VoIP When Working from Home on Sunday April 11, 2021 @02:01AM (#26767810)
I agree that VoIP is tailor-made for working from home, but I’m not sure about using VoIP over wifi. VoIP is very sensitive to internet issues and wifi connections can be quite unstable. Furthermore, the issues caused by the wifi connection would be intermittent so they’d be extra hard to diagnose.
Re:Show HN: VoIP Spear on Friday March 26, 2021 @12:56PM (#26594313)
VoIP Spear is a service that monitors your internet connection and uses network performance data (e.g., latency, packet loss, jitter) to estimate what your voice quality is at any given time.

VoIP Spear is useful because most network issues are intermittent, meaning that the issue has resolved itself by the time you contact support. VoIP Spear can give you information about problems that occurred in the past.

These days, latency is very low for most calls in North America. In fact, when we calculate MOS (which is a score for your call quality), we don’t even use latency if it’s under 100ms.

These days, I find more call quality issues are a result of issues on the LAN rather than the Internet. More specifically, I see voice quality degradation caused by routers/firewalls that are not quite able to deal with the volume of traffic being pushed through them.

I write software as both a career and also a hobby. I’ve been doing this for many years and I still love it.

My advice to you is to go for it.

About your RSI — I have suffered with this for many years. I found that switching my keyboard to a new one would bring instant relief. The only problem is that the new keyboards were lasting me shorter and shorter times. I remember I was getting down to switching my keyboard every 11-13 days!

And then I found a permanent solution. I now go for a massage every 3-4 weeks with the focus being on my arms, neck, hands. Since I started this, I haven’t replaced my keyboard in 2 years!

There are three targets for VoIP Spear.

1. Personal: Home users use VoIP Spear to monitor their VoIP service to provide information to their service providers about the problems they are experiencing.

2. SME: Businesses that have VoIP use VoIP Spear in the same way as the home users.

3. Service providers: Service providers use VoIP Spear because it is an inexpensive and cheap way to get data about the issues their customers are experiencing. Most VoIP service providers are typically unable to get any data about the quality of phone calls their customers experience.

It's frustrating for people who experience voice quality issues because the problems are usually intermittent. This means that, by the time they contact their service providers, the problem is not occurring and they just get a lame 'have you tried rebooting your modem/router' response.

VoIP Spear monitors 24x7x365 so customers can provide historical data to their service providers to show the issue occurred.

Also, service providers use VoIP Spear because they want help troubleshooting. They are also frustrated that the issue is no longer occurring by the time the customer calls for support.

We’re not monitoring phone calls. We’re monitoring the network conditions. This means we can provide an estimate of call quality even when there’s no calls on the network.

I run VoIP Spear (voipspear.com) by myself. We're doing about $5k/month.

VoIP Spear is a service for people who use VoIP. It monitors your Internet connection and alerts when you have a call quality issue.

voipspear.com - we monitor your VoIP quality and alert you when you have a problem.

VoIP Spear: https://voipspear.com

VoIP Spear monitors your Internet connection 24x7 for voic quality issues affecting your phone calls. I have about 850 active users though not all are paying users.

I created the site because I work in the VoIP industry and its crazy expensive to do continuous VoIP monitoring. There was no low cost, easy to use option so I decided to do it myself.

I created voipspear.com about 8 years ago and have been running it ever since.
