Whew, so not Ice-nine

Re:Effects of Corporal Punishment on Children on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @10:35PM (#49355916)
You could wonder that, but if you're a proper skeptic you also have to wonder the opposite.

Vaccines and autism isn't a "moral" question, so it's not really comparable IMO.

Re:Effects of Corporal Punishment on Children on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @10:07PM (#49355666)
I wonder if you could publish the opposite result without your career being corporally punished.

> These findings stopped me in my tracks because those two jobs rely on the same thing as my own work: maps.

Those jobs rely on navigation, not maps. Reading maps and navigating the real world are very, very different things.

The later point about zip codes with higher complexity is the same - these residents have to _navigate_ in more complex situations. How the author seems to be conflating that their personal job of staring at maps therefore protects them from Alheimers is very wishful thinking IMO.

Based on this data, I wouldn't be surprised if Google Maps has lead to a rise of Alzheimers.

Well, Mars has 1/3 of earth gravity so that helps.

So for spinning the capsule, you only need say 1/5 earth gravity to be reasonably capable of walking on Mars.

Does that help?

Lua is a very small language though and sandboxing it to specific global functions is trivial

Author here, what question do you have? I'll eventually be writing my own Lua interpreter but the whole stack is designed to (and currently does) bootstrap from standard Lua 5.4 (or 5.5)

Hey, author here - thanks for posting!

Re:Making ASCII Art in Vim on Monday July 20, 2026 @07:32PM (#48986248)
Awesome! I added your blog to the docs for an ascii art color syntax I wrote for my vim-like editor, I'd love if you checked it out

https://civboot.github.io/lua/asciigame.html

Note: right now the editor crashes if you mis-type any of the syntax... it's not really fully launched, going to fix that soon hopefully but you can see a [screenshot](https://civboot.github.io/img/asciigame.png) of what it looks like

Also, if you know any other good references for getting into asciiart I'd love to reference them as well.

Note: the Ele editor isn't _quite_ ready for all the asciiart features in your blog post, notably virtualedit and macros are not implemented yet - but I just added basic visual mode so it's getting close!

Maybe Cyc was a success and Lenat lives on as it's consciousness?

How can you know what you want if the hedonic treadmill prevents one from appreciating what they already have?
Re:Lua, a Misunderstood Language on Monday March 24, 2025 @08:09PM (#43466770)
Indeed. I'm writing a full tech stack at https://lua.civboot.org -- the language is incredible to work with.
It's amazing when laws make complete and consistent sense, +100 to this great answer
Some confusion in this thread. I think it would help folks to know that in addition to conservation of energy, our universe has conservation of angular momentum, aka mass spin.

Hope that helps!

Have you tried it? It takes only a minute or so, what's the worst that could happen?
There are like 6 core activities that bind humans together: shared creation of food, myth and music; co habitation, protection, child rearing.

We've done these things ourselves for hundreds of thousands of years. As we are increasingly convinced to buy them for convenience we loose the very things that make us know our connectedness.

So ya, there are real problems caused by the convenience of technology

I was replying to this bit

> difference between C++ and C is that the former is a large multi-paradigm language, while the latter is a minimalist language. These are completely different axes. > There is no corresponding popular replacement for C that's more minimalist than Rust and memory safe.

Edit: oh, I never read the last bit "and memory safe" -- well ya, that's kind of rust's major advantage.

Re:Roc rewrites the compiler in Zig on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @10:37PM (#42943398)
It's not just the lang but the std lib too

From what I understand that language is Zig, no?

Also, there's FORTH!

This is the regulations I'm talking about.

No thanks, I bet the regulatory burden is absurd

Re:It's not a crime if we do it with an app on Sunday January 26, 2025 @12:18PM (#42831713)
Why are there not local competitors to checks notes cook, bag and freeze potatoes at a 10x markup?

Might it be an overly large regulatory burden on starting said competitor?

Re:Principles of Educational Programming Language Design on Tuesday December 17, 2024 @09:21AM (#42441522)
Computers should be controlled (primarily) via a programming language (aka the shell). That way you are "learning" every time you want to do anything on your computer, and anything you do can be programmed.

I prefer Lua for this purpose (and am extending it to be more suitable), but almost any "simple" language will do. Sh/bash are the original and IMO we should try to move away from them (pipes are still cool though)

Re:Always go to the funeral (2005) on Tuesday December 17, 2024 @09:03AM (#42441392)
Funerals are an "odd custom"? What an entirely odd thing to say, I cannot imagine what you mean. Why is meditating on the passing of a friend, remembering their life and being present with the grief of their family "odd"??
