Thank you for all the details and suggestions!

Can you describe your setup please? I've been thinking about moving the family members off Gmail a lot lately.
Re:New Map Scale Is More Readable by People Who Are Color Blind on Wednesday August 15, 2018 @10:15AM (#17766147)
Yes, Viridis is quantifiably better than Parula, as the talk shows, but Parula comes with the standard Matlab, and the jump from Jet to Parula was of such a tremendous magnitude that I kind of fell in love with the Parula color scheme right away. Jump from Parula to Viridis would be less noticeable, I guess. The talk opened my eyes to the fact that there are much better ways to use color for information presentation. (Sorry for the late reply)
I am not colorblind, but work with data visualization in Matlab a lot. This hilarious SciPy2015 talk[1] convinced me to switch to the Parula color scheme. There's no way I'm going back to Jet.

How many languages do you speak more or less fluently?
Re:The Valve Employee Handbook (2012) [pdf] on Monday March 23, 2015 @10:25AM (#9251048)
All right, since everybody seems to have read the handbook, here's something fresh: Gabe Newell's email [0], taken from today's r/Steam, where he shares his thoughts behind the flat company structure which Valve is so famous for.

Nice try, but you still got an 'e' in your username )
Re:An Author Confronts Her Number One Online Critic on Saturday October 18, 2014 @05:48PM (#8476440)
This reminds me of another story by Leo Traynor about troll's victim tracking down and finally meeting the troll: http://www.traynorseye.com/2012/09/meeting-troll.html The massive amount of damage that can be imposed by all kinds of online manipulators to their victims' mental health and career is even more depressing than the complete absence of a solution to the problem. At least I'm glad to hear that breaking the 'Do not engage' rule brought some relief to Kathleen.

Re:Emacs and Vim on Friday July 25, 2014 @09:07AM (#8084958)
Just key 'j' followed by 'k'. I have this in my vimrc for quickly jumping out of insert mode: inoremap jk <ESC>
Re:Emacs and Vim on Friday July 25, 2014 @08:32AM (#8084826)
If you remap Esc to jk you don't even have to lift your fingers.
Yay teen pregnancy!

What? Not everyone needs, wants or can afford (hi EU!) Apple devices, which are loosing more and more ground to competitors every quarter.

Re:A Haskell Programmer Tries to Learn Racket on Wednesday April 16, 2014 @07:22AM (#7597095)
Wow, thank you very much for your suggestions and the .els! I guess now I'm really out of excuses not to start with SICP.
Re:A Haskell Programmer Tries to Learn Racket on Wednesday April 16, 2014 @04:17AM (#7596652)
Could you please outline your final setup besides using Geiser? I also come from Vim-land, have almost zero experience with Emacs and already understood that, to learn SICP, setting up and learning Emacs is going to be easier than setting up Vim for the task.
Re:Amazon EC2 Pricing Changes Effective April 1, 2014 on Wednesday March 26, 2014 @05:19PM (#7476750)
Well, I bought a 3-year reserved heavy utilization plan just a couple of hours before these news went live. My pain is about 2 orders of magnitude less than yours, though. I wonder if you can contact someone at Amazon and ask for some kind of discount.

Anyway, what a massive drop in price and what a swift reaction from Amazon. Competition can really do wonders. I just hope we won't be seeing drops in the level of service.

Well, this link is also on Reddit's front page now.

Re:What is really happening in Ukraine on Monday January 27, 2014 @11:34AM (#7131227)
> this is still just a few thousands of extremists being destructive... Most adult people want this to stop and get back to work.

I'm not even going to ask you how exactly do you know this, because this is completely untrue. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Ukrainians who already actively expressed their support to current shift in Ukrainian political landscape and their distrust to corrupt politicians currently in charge of the country, call it a war or a revolution. Arguing that and calling them "few thousands of extremists" is laughable - just have a look at any of the livestreams. Also, most adult people are at work. Ukraine is a big country.

From your comments I conclude that they have some agenda behind them. You are either trolling, deliberately trying to misinform HN community, or doing both of those things.

Re:Revolution in Kiev on Sunday January 26, 2014 @07:27AM (#7124885)
Two things that especially amaze about the actual 'street part' of Ukrainian revolution are complete absence of plundering or looting of local shops and that no firearms have been used by protesters.
That happened yesterday, and at least two major Ukrainian mobile operators stated [1,2] that they have nothing to do with these SMS broadcasts and that pirate base stations were probably used in the area of the disturbance.

Sometimes malice tries to hide behind stupidity's back.

What you are suggesting (or quite in the spirit of that) is currently being implemented in Russia [1] as a so called Unified Register of Forbidden Websites. It is perceived by a lot of people in Russia as a dumbest initiative by government in the whole IT-regulation field and continues to produce suspicious, erroneous, as well as erratic and simply idiotic bans.

Re:The first Bitcoin post on HN on Tuesday November 19, 2013 @11:45AM (#6762376)
Well, yeah, but more like 97,89%, from what I gather. From time to time I fancy this idea of toying with some NLP package to calculate percentage of the HN comments that go like "Yes, but no", "Cool, but meh" or "Sure, but no way".

Oh wait, what did I just do?

Re:JetBrains releases open-source Python IDE on Tuesday September 24, 2013 @03:56PM (#6440313)
If you are a Vim fan, try using IdeaVim plugin with PyCharm. Plugins can be installed directly from the in-IDE plugin library.
Re:Fucking Sue Me (2011) on Wednesday September 11, 2013 @10:53AM (#6367523)
Do you also like to deliberately explain (at least to yourself) your upvotes and all the cases when you didn't make your mind or mindfully decided not to upvote or downvote? Not trolling you, I just have really hard time trying to give my vote either way, and usually just move on to next comment or submission.
Re:"Let's ban tiny phones" - UK Government on Thursday August 22, 2013 @09:04AM (#6256822)
My thoughts exactly (except for the part of making it an underground startup): in these days of drones and copters boom, I wonder how much time will pass before we hear about phones, guns, tobacco or whatever being smuggled into prisons by swarms of elusive quadrocopters.
