Re:How to design a good native-looking WordPress Admin icon on Wednesday July 25, 2012 @12:43PM (#4291740)
Decent enough article, some good points made, but what the heck does it have to do with Inception and dream states?
Re:The Singularity is Near movie now available on Monday July 23, 2012 @07:31PM (#4283559)
Interested in any reviews HN users might have. I'm sitting on the fence with this one.
There's a Jerry Springer quality to the comments, which isn't all bad. Sometimes I'll go to read them for a laugh.

In the photo, there's an arm growing right out of the guys head. Wondering if this is this a Silicon Valley thing, or if he should see a doctor.
Love the design of the blog. It's brilliant. So swish. The problem is they all look the same, and it kills the branding aspect of it.

Still, there is a very clever plan unfolding and it's pretty cool. Look forward to seeing more.

NEWS FLASH: Being bitter, apathetic and contrarian does not make you sound smart. This is undeniably an awesome idea. Stop searching for flaws and help.
I guess I'm in the minority to side with Microsoft on this one. Look, the guy uploaded nudes, maybe it was even porn. He violated the rules. This isn't censorship, it's not creepy, it's the rules.
Re:I supported App.net with $50/year, here’s why on Wednesday July 18, 2012 @10:10PM (#4264071)
$50? With all the cake he's making? Maybe there really is a depression out there.
Re:Who Are The 5 People You Spend Time With? on Wednesday July 18, 2012 @10:00PM (#4264042)
One of my best friends is an elderly woman who lives alone and cannot walk. She slurs her speech because of a bad head injury a few years back. She has a terrible short term memory.

She is pretty cool.

I visit her about three times a week and we will talk for hours. I wonder why we get along so darn well - I'm a 40 year old single guy with practically zero in common with her - but I always leave her house feeling happy. She will wave goodbye to me from the screen door until I am out of view.

I like watching out for her wellbeing and brightening her day, yet I still feel I'm the one who is benefiting.

Ok, now that I used this app I'm totally impressed. It even continues blocking after rebooting. Ha! Awesome.

I banged off almost 1000 words yesterday and had to shut down because of an oncoming storm. This morning I boot up and my connection is still locked up. My browser is saying I need to type another 1000 words if I want to get Internet. Nice.

I think your app will do well!

Re:Ask HN: How do you get to be good at this? on Tuesday July 17, 2012 @11:26PM (#4259220)
Sounds like you're suffering depression. I suggest looking into some remedies, be it meds, an exercise regime or better diet. But really, look into it.

I'd also suggest looking somewhere completely different. Go get inspired. Do you know how? That's important. Refresh your spirit. Meditate. Pray. Befriend someone who is lonely. Get your mind blown by learning something completely new.

The world may be radically different when your done doing that, a new world of possibilities.

Judging by his web page, Cliff is a doer anyway. He ships. In the end, I don't think he'll need Arrington's help. He will be successful because of who he is.
Awesome app. I'll check it out. But I wish it wasn't a browser plugin. Too many browser plugins are bogging up my browsing experience.
Re:Dear Marissa Mayer...please make Flickr awesome again on Tuesday July 17, 2012 @06:50PM (#4258342)
First, PROTECT Flickr and ensure it's part of Yahoo's core, and then improve it.

But Flickr is pretty awesome as is. I use it almost daily. It's almost as valuable as Wikipedia IMO.

Any email I can't unsubscribe from with one click, I flag as spam. Even stuff I initially signed up to.

If I have to log in to change my preferences or reply with REMOVE, it's spam. Easy peasy.

I'm wondering if there's something about computer related tech fields that tends to promote unkind, amoral, and short-sighted outlooks on the world.

Don't forget drama.

I despise cars too (which definitely makes me an oddball since I'm Canadian and live in a mid-sized city), so I sympathize with you. North America is obsessed with cars, and has caused a lot of pollution and havoc on the landscape.

But I digress. I just wanted to let you know there are others that feel the same way.

Re:Micro-apartments next for S.F.? on Sunday July 15, 2012 @03:06PM (#4247728)
My comment was to bring attention to the humane treatment of animals.

I'm an apartment renter and I've lived near many dog owners. I make it a point to introduce myself and offer to walk their dog(s). Without fail, the dogs are beside themselves with excitement when I get them.

Dogs especially need lots of space and exercise. What a pet owner may think is a big enough apartment may not be.

I'm not sure what your qualifications are to reply as you did, but I doubt it's on par with Arthur Berman, a petroleum geologist and editorial board member of The Oil Drum. His views are quite different than yours.

Here's an interview he did on the Kunstlercast: http://kunstlercast.com/shows/kunstlercast-192-arthur-e-berm...

Re:Micro-apartments next for S.F.? on Sunday July 15, 2012 @11:04AM (#4247064)
Sure, although it's common for single people to have a pet.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada I think it's illegal for renters to discriminate against pet owners. Many still do however.

Re:Micro-apartments next for S.F.? on Sunday July 15, 2012 @10:46AM (#4247038)
I'm concerned about house pets (like dogs and cats) in such a small apartment. Are these micro apartments fit for dwelling in for long periods of time? I don't think so. Cats and dogs need space too, and they don't have the freedom to come and go whenever they please.
