I'll find a problem that annoys me and if I can't find an existing solution for it I'll just build it as a side project. For example, I recently built https://rockyai.me/ because I was annoyed with having to copy paste stuff into chat gpt all the time from my browser.

True I get that. I think even for full time founders if you’re seeing crazy adoption by unpaid customers, then there’s something there. Once you have a bunch of free users it’s easy to expand into something that users are willing to pay for then to do that from scratch.

You don’t wanna be in a place where you’re seeing low signups overall and low usage even by free customers. It’s nice to be cautious of that but again all of these metrics are relative to what stage your company is at.

I love them! Free users are still validation that there is a demand for what you’re building. Ofc it might still be the case that most people aren’t willing to pay for your product, but you’re only going to find that out once you keep building.

It’s easy to build something and get started if you don’t shoot for the moon right away and try to only build something if you think it’ll be a unicorn. If I want a product for myself badly enough, there’s a good chance that others around me want it to. It might not be a unicorn but I’ll still be happy about the 10 customers that love the product!

Workout, play some sports, eat all day, get buff

The extension reports some minimal metrics around where the extension was used (just the hostname of the url) and by which user. Other than that the content of the webpage is proxied to OpenAI's apis.

I have plans to in future 1) make the metrics tracking optional and 2) let folks use their own OpenAI API key if they want.

I built https://rockyai.me/ (chrome extension to chat with any webpage) for my personal use tbh but ended up putting it on the store for others to use as well. One of my friends sent it to his data who is retired and consumes a lot of news articles online. I see his dad using the extension a few times every few hours now to summarize things / get more background on stories.

Yea it's very similar rn. You basically get that feature in chrome with this. However, I plan to add a bunch more features to it (saving history, saved prompt templates to use per domain, etc) soon

Not right now but I do plan to add that as a feature in future. I'm gonna let people use their OpenAI key or their custom OAI compatible endpoint with the extension
