Ask HN: Thoughts on a Patreon-Style Crowdfunded Dating App?

Hi HN community,I recently launched a unique dating app that's gaining traction, especially in Africa. My app features video-based profiles and an AI chatbot assistant for user onboarding, enhancing the user experience right from the start. One idea I was considering is incorporating a Patreon-style crowdfunding model. This could allow users to support the app's development and access premium...

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely use that from now on, great work.

One thing I noticed after creating a simple button component was that it does not export the font family of the text within but that might be a Figma limitation.

A plugin for React Native would be nice!

I’m thinking it’s not possible for TikTok to take 70% of the proceeds if there’s App Store fees and sales taxes / VAT involved.

But please show me the math if I’m wrong.

Re:TikTok profits from livestreams of families begging on Thursday October 13, 2022 @12:44PM (#33193470)
I think their system works like this:

You buy two coins for $0.02 and they give one diamond or $0.01 to the recipient. This looks like a 50% cut but after App Store fees and taxes it's more like 25%.

Still bad but not 70% as implied in the article.

Re:TikTok profits from livestreams of families begging on Thursday October 13, 2022 @10:44AM (#33191702)
TikTok gifts are not charitable donations. They are in-app purchases. For every gift you buy, streamers earn "diamonds" which can be withdrawn for cash.

You cannot built this kind of functionality without giving Google/Apple a 30% cut, plus they collect sales tax and VAT on your behalf.

I'll give you an example. If I sell an in-app purchase for a price of £1 in the UK, £0.17 go to the government, and £0.25 to Apple/Google. I'm left with £0.58!

It's funny how these journalists spend all this time researching these stories but miss a very important point - Google and Apple take a 30% cut off in-app purchases. Governments take sales taxes/VAT as well - up to 25% in some European countries.

It's not TikTok pocketing 70%.

The App Review Guidelines at 4.3) Spam states: the App Store has enough ... dating apps. We will reject these apps unless they provide a unique, high-quality experience.

Does the App Store accept any new dating apps at all? How high is the bar set for the definition of unique high-quality experience? I'd hate to invest time and money into creating an iOS app just to have it rejected.

I'll try to ask this question on October 17th in the App Store Slack channel they've created but I'm just wondering what you all think here.

I'm trying to clone a repo at a whopping 6KB/s from Kenya.

EDIT: Seems to be a routing issue. I've enabled a UK VPN and it's working fine now.

Sidekick is an app which cuts down on food waste by creating weekly meal plans which use up all the ingredients that you buy.

They also run an awesome YouTube channel that is worth checking out:

Not related to semiconductors but I've recently bought a ring with a lab made silicon carbide moissanite crystal.

They're incredibly beautiful and I think a good alternative to diamonds:

That sounds incredible! Do you have a YouTube channel?

How do you drive traffic to your page if publishing the service on HN & PH fails? I built https://moderationsystem.com for businesses that need content moderators and I'm currently trying to figure out the best method to acquire new users.
Re:Ask HN: Did HN's font change recently? on Friday October 08, 2021 @02:43AM (#28796401)
Did you recently update your OS? I had to disable font smoothing on my Mac to avoid blurry text.

https://colinstodd.com/posts/tech/fix-macos-catalina-fonts-a...

I'd try to make an appointment at the "Genius Bar" and talking to someone about it. If it's a common issue, they might replace it for free if you're lucky.

They generally have a tiered repair pricing model and I think minor issues like the flex cable would cost around the cheaper price you've been quoted for and replacing the whole display would be the higher price.

https://logi.wiki/index.php/Apple_MacBook_Flat_Rate_Repair_P...

I should clarify that on the home page. Thanks for the feedback! We are planning to review images and flag them for objectionable content e.g. explicit, violent, etc.

Here's the full list of types:

I'm building a human content moderation service as an API for developers. It's not fully ready yet (expected next week) but people can sign up and start exploring the docs. I'd love to hear your feedback and any features you might want to see:

Some places started offering remote work visas:

https://expertvagabond.com/digital-nomad-work-visas/

Appreciate the suggestion, thanks! I got the domains view.dev and view.page, what do you think of those?

View.com was taken. They're selling windows, I mean actual glass not the OS.

I love using Firebase Auth: https://firebase.google.com/docs/auth
Thanks for the feedback! How long did it take you to implement this and are you also encoding videos for adaptive streaming?
Yeah, I guess you're right. Do you have experience with SEO? What would be the best way to improve search ranking?

I suppose running a blog with good content might be helpful so that someone might find the service using a search term like "video streaming api" or similar.

> Can you give some examples?

Someone woke up one day with a $8,000 bill while encoding videos:

https://github.com/awslabs/video-on-demand-on-aws/issues/48

There's also this pretty architecture overview in the repo:

https://github.com/awslabs/video-on-demand-on-aws/blob/maste...

In my opinion, it's too complex and I'd prefer a more simple solution to get to market faster.

Imagine adding just a few lines of code to get started instead of setting up all these things on AWS, where you might end up paying up to $0.12/GB for outgoing bandwidth as well.
