Re:Ask HN: PhD, Startup, or Career? on Tuesday January 27, 2009 @07:18PM (#453039)

Considering you have a masters or at least an undergrad, you could probably ride the recession out inside a classroom.

A startup seems like a relatively quick return but its a gamble.

As for a career, both other options constitute as elements of one. If you mean striving to have some polished, dignified social timeline in your field, I say screw it, live for now.

My idea for a site is one based on design, and more specifically, the constant retooling of objects that we interact with on a daily basis. My goal would be to provide an environment, not a forum, for designers and ideamakers alike to interact on the idea of reinventing our natural and synthetic surroundings.

I want to learn a new code, and have heard lots about Ruby, Python, and Perl, but I want to be sure before I begin my endeavor. Familiar with HTML, XHTML, some Perl. Any ideas?
