Hello Hacker News community,

Recently, I missed a domain expiration. As you may know, when a domain is in the redemption period, it costs about x5 the renewal price to recover.

I'm curious to know how you prevent such situations. Do you have any strategies or tools for tracking domain expiration dates and preventing accidental lapses?

I've created a tool that helps monitor domain expiration dates and sends notifications about upcoming expirations. I'd love to hear about other solutions or practices that community members use to prevent downtime.

I would appreciate your advice!

Thanks for the snippet. I wish it would work for all TLDs.

Re:Show HN: Kit DOMAINS – domain health monitoring tool on Tuesday June 11, 2024 @03:49AM (#40643669)
First of all, thank you.

The difference is in simplicity. You just need to add a domain and nothing else. Healthcheck works right out of the box.

As a software engineer, I like many settings in domain-monitor.

But as a regular customer (SEO specialist, busy founder/domain owner) who just wants to add a domain name, unfortunately, I can't do it without manually adding a notification channel, domain, and monitoring settings.

Another difference is that with the free plan, you can do more (compared to domain-monitor.io, for example). You can be notified about SSL expiration, add more domains, etc.

Behind kit.domains, there are just two people (me – a software developer, and my wife – a marketing specialist).

Indie product -> less bureaucracy -> quicker features.

A few cool features like domain cost optimization and monitoring Domain Authority are coming soon.

I like apps with lifetime deals (as do many people, I think). Unfortunately, some of them are not really 'lifetime'.

So, I want to build a tool that validates products according to certain criteria.

Currently, my tool is in beta.

The criteria are as follows:

- Domain age and expiration date: The domain age must be more than 3 months, and the expiration date must be more than 2 years away.

- Check for downloadable content: If the product is downloadable, there is a greater chance for it to be a lifetime deal.

- Checking social pages: Social pages must contain the latest posts (currently it only checks the link on social pages).

- I'm thinking about adding another criterion such as 'posts on social accounts', 'existence of a refund policy', and 'fair price'.

If anyone has some experience or ideas on how to ensure that a lifetime deal is truly lifetime (or at least for 1-2 years), please share.

Thanks in advance.
