Bringing white-collar criminal cases may be easier in Iceland because courts don’t use juries. Rather, they employ neutral experts to help judges understand the intricacies of finance.

I believe Iceland is in the minority among developed nations that don't use juries, but I think this is a major strength in their court system.

Out of curiosity, what is everyone's preferred login mechanism?

Facebook? Twitter? Google?

MindCipher is a side project I've been working on with a couple friends. We're a bunch of geeks and love solving puzzles, so we built MindCipher to aggregate some of the world's greatest mental challenges.

We currently have over 200 users and we're actively iterating based on their suggestions.

Feedback is welcome!

Ask HN: Working at Google - is better to live nearby or in SF?

I'll be starting at Google in a few months and I'm debating between living in SF or nearby in Mountain View/Palo Alto/Sunnyvale.I do like living in the city, but worry that commuting back and forth may get tiring on a daily basis. If I live in the cities around Google, I'll have to get a car, whereas living in SF I probably won't need one. What are everyone's thoughts?Where does everyone in the...

Re:Show HN: My side project – Do I need a visa for...? on Sunday March 24, 2013 @11:11PM (#5435169)
Serves the same purpose as http://www.visahq.com/, but it would nice to see a better presentation.

J-1 Visa immediately followed by a TN Visa?

I'm a Canadian citizen and I'll be graduating and working full-time in May. Is it possible to do an internship on a J-1 Visa, and then start a full-time position with a different company on a TN Visa immediately after?I'm thinking of doing a 3 month internship before starting full-time at another company.

Extremely useful! I'm getting tired of opening Sublime, TextMate, or even worse, Notes.app or Stickies.app.

Maybe not in terms of absolute impact on the world, but they're both comparable in sheer audacity as entrepreneurs.

It's amazing just how real Elon Musk is -- he doesn't sugar coat answers and isn't furtive when describing Tesla's many weaknesses, unlike most other automaker CEOs.
This is like the DARPA Mind's Eye project, except the DARPA project does this computationally. http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/01/beyond-surveillance-...
The Win8 Store isn't even open to all submissions at this point. Microsoft has only issued a handful of keys to selected developers, which allows them to submit apps. Without this key, you can't even make a developer account.

If you don't have a key, you can still develop Metro apps with VS 2011 Beta and test them using the Windows app certification utility that's included to see if the app would hypothetically pass.

I suppose this limits the growth of the Win8 Store at first, but I'm still surprised that there are only 99 apps given how many keys were issued. Also, I believe Microsoft is funding the development of apps by some popular app developers for iOS and Android.

Show HN: Weekend project - Pushroad Tagger

http://pushroad.com

I thought it would be nice to create a simple tagging utility that lets people tag photos (outside of the confines of Facebook or Flickr) and share them. In particular, I geared this site toward auto enthusiasts, but it can really be used for any pictures.Check it out and tell me what you think! I know there's definitely a lot of bugs and work that needs to be done, but it would be nice to get...

Re:Ask HN: How to start-up when you are not technical? on Monday March 07, 2011 @03:55AM (#2296548)
Since you are a group of girls in the startup scene, for whatever project you take on, I would suggest that you put a lot of focus on being in the public eye for your brand (I mean this in the least creepy way possible). In an industry that's clouded with males, a startup with a group of female founders is quite refreshing, and would likely get some good media attention.

Ask HN: Freelance work for a "semi-skilled" designer/coder.

I'm interested in doing some freelance work for a few extra bucks, but I'm not really sure what my "skill" level is in terms of freelancing. I have 2-3 years experience with PHP (and CakePHP), CSS, Javascript, jQuery, and I'm pretty good with Photoshop. I'm also pretty good with C++ and Java, but I don't think that would be of much use for freelance-sized projects. For the most part, if I'm...

Re: Review my startup, Lettur on Sunday February 27, 2011 @09:29PM (#2269796)
I think the term 'startup' is being thrown around too much these days. Don't get me wrong, I do see potential in your idea but it's probably a bit soon to be considered a startup.
Re:Ask HN: Best way to send out large-scale emailers? on Sunday February 13, 2011 @02:35PM (#2213601)
I think a big factor that's hurting the process is the emails that bounce or must wait to be received by the server on the receiving end. The server keeps retrying sending emails to those addresses, and eventually it just accumulates.

Ask HN: Best way to send out large-scale emailers?

A friend of mine has been running a fairly successful e-commerce operation for the last 3 years, and he's been having trouble with sending emails to a mailing list of between 700 and 800k email addresses. Basically, the volume of emails is starting to bog down his servers and T1 lines. Does anyone have suggestions for 1) balancing he load when sending the emailers out to minimize the impedance...

Ask HN: How are taxes/deductions in the Valley?

I'm going to be moving to the Palo Alto/Mountain View area in May to start an internship. I'll be making close to $15/hour and I'm wondering how much of that will be deducted for taxes or other reasons? Also, in Canada (I'm from Toronto) there are TD1 tax forms that students who are still in school and paying tuition can fill out to lessen their tax deductions. Is there anything similar in...
