Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Sunday November 01, 2026 @03:39PM (#50329605)
Not just leaders, but government in general. Unelected bureaucracies can be just as dangerous.

And they are not our leaders, they are our representatives. Regarding them as leaders allows them to act as our betters. And another reason for term limits on Congress.

The Brewers are built for long term, success.

Hopefully the impending lockout doesn't last long.

Re:8 in 10 Americans oppose live-streaming execution on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:15PM (#50154230)
What President Trump did was make us think past the sale. He made everyone agree to executing the POS by turning the argument into whether it should be televised.

Will Chrome go the way of Internet Explorer 6?

Microsoft killed off all competition. Then the only improvements were Microsoft proprietary.

Re:US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call? on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:20PM (#49392711)
The way to fix it is Congress critters can't run for reelection if the budget has a deficit.

balance budget amendment that also mandates a clean budget every year term limits push services off to the states. Not everything is a federal responsibility.

Re:US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call? on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:15PM (#49392643)
Military spending is #3 on the list.

Entitlements are far and away the largest expenditure.

The President doesn't have a line item veto, unfortunately.
Re:ICE to Pay Thomson Reuters $125M to Find Voter Fraud on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @12:44PM (#48994787)
ICE will say their mandate in this context is to ensure that non-US citizens are not on state voter rolls.

ICE knows illegals are less inclined to register to vote knowing that ICE monitors voter rolls.

Will they decertify previously certified PQC-free products?
Please read the comments in the Reason article. Autumn Billings has a track record of distorting the facts.

"Last Independence Day, several protesters were arrested following a demonstration that turned violent outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Prairieland Detention Center."

This was not a spontaneous act. The Antifa folks set up a deadly ambush of federal officials.

The US taxpayer is a not a slush fund for global healthcare.

We are already $39T+ in debt. Where does it end?

Re:ADT says customer data stolen in cyber intrusion on Thursday May 07, 2026 @09:25AM (#48049161)
"An investigation into the incident found the stolen information ranged from names, phone numbers, addresses and dates of birth to the last four digits of Social Security numbers and tax IDs."

Why should any company have your SSN or tax ID unless explicitly required by law? A credit check is one thing, but afterward they must delete the entire SSN and the credit report โ€” as if they never possessed it.

Businesses required to keep it for tax/financial reporting (e.g., banks) should be banned from using it for any verification or identification purposes.

Can you keep an eye on government planes that would be airborned if the SHTF?

E-4Bs, E-6s, VC-25As, C-32A, etc plus mass helo flights exiting DC.

Topic reminds me of the movie Miracle Mile.

Re:America will come to regret its war on taxes on Monday April 20, 2026 @10:16PM (#47843739)
The income tax needs to be replaced with a consumption tax. The income tax is a terrible system for an internet based economy.

To ensure that the consumption tax doesn't hit the poor too hard the govt can determine how much someone at the poverty line would pay, on average, in monthly taxes ie$200. The govt then deposits $200 monthly in to every US citizen's USG debit card.

Recent Florida case prohibits cash-register justice tickets like this, ticketing vehicle owner and not the driver.

Murphy is the typical ignorant politician. Iran has been chanting Death to America since 1979 and was on the verge of getting a nuke.

9/11 happened because we failed to act when we had the chance to take out UBL in the 90's. Trump is not waiting for us to get nuked. His actions are simple self-defense by putting the Persians back in charge in Iran. So oil prices go up for a month, big deal.

The world will be FAR safer when that terrorist regime is gone.

Not enough opportunity to grift off the taxpayers. Private enterprise will focus on faster, cheaper, better while the government and its contractors focus on keeping the gravy training running.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VinCGmdj-jQ He's a lawyer and describes it in excellent detail.

One side issues the judge brought up is that no points go on the driver's record with a red light camera offense. The entire point of the points system is to get bad drivers off the road. But people can have numerous red light infractions and still keep their license.

I would bet big bucks that the people not on SNAP are healthier than those on it.

SNAP is supposed to be about nutrition.

The law's definition of harm is massively subjective. It will have judges who think words are violence or make the process the punishment.

This is a law that will be used to censor.

Like a prior SCOTUS did with Brown v Board of Education, which was a very good overturning of precedent?

SCOTUS has been liberal since the FDR days. The pendulum has now swung in the opposite direction.

The current SCOTUS is reducing the power of the administrative state and the unelected bureaucrats.

Re:I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla on Friday November 14, 2025 @11:42AM (#45928622)
I want a browser to prioritize speed, standards, stability and security.

All other features should come via add-ons.

Plus, if I want an AI in my browser I don't want it locked to Mozilla's AI.

Apple and F1 reach 5-year media deal, bringing all races to Apple TV streaming in the U.S. Starting in 2026 all F1 events will be exclusively on Apple TV.
Re:MAGA declares war on the property tax on Monday September 01, 2025 @08:45PM (#45097969)
Property taxes have no place in a free society. That kind of tax is also known as rent payments. If you stop paying the tax the REAL owner of the property evicts you from the property.

The solution is to replace the property tax with a sales tax.

To ensure that the sales tax doesn't hit the poor too hard the state can determine how much someone at the poverty line pays on average in sales taxes every month ie $200. The state then sends a check for $200 to every state resident every month.
