Re:Ask HN: C/C++ developer wanting to learn efficient Python on Wednesday April 10, 2024 @11:52AM (#39992104)
Check out old Pycon schedules and search for 'efficient(cy)/improve/speed/performance'.

Every Pycon has at least one talk on it and they are usually filled with a variety of tips and insights.

Prioritise by keynote speeches, recent ones, country level ones and then city Pycon.

I am facing this issue in the recent versions of Android Firefox where if I switch apps and come back, or lock and unlock the phone instantly leads to the page refreshing and scrolling back to the point where I was reading. This is quite frustrating as I have to keep the Firefox app always open or wait a frustrating amount of time for the page to completely load and scroll down. Some pages with progressive loading will take a huge amount of time for the page to completely re-download and if you scroll even slightly, the auto-scroll to where you last left is lost.

I can replicate it with just a single tab and I have excluded Firefox from all my battery saving and memory saving features.

I know of https://autonews.io/ mentioned before. They look unrelated but would you know of any connection except for their similar domain?

Re:Hedonometer: Average Happiness of Twitter over Time on Thursday April 29, 2021 @06:04PM (#26987406)
Feels very US related. Twitter in India is all about COVID-19 second wave right now and that hasn't affected the graph even though the sheer mass of English speaking Indians should have had some effect. The only mention I can see is April 28, 2021 twentieth word 'oxygen'.
Re:Qutebrowser 2.0 on Thursday January 28, 2021 @09:55AM (#25942624)
Any reason my Antivirus considers it a problem? " C:\Program Files\qutebrowser\qutebrowser.exe is infected with Gen:Variant.Mikey.118185 " This is with Bitdefender.

I downloaded the prebuilt windows binary from https://github.com/qutebrowser/qutebrowser/releases

I don't get it. Can you explain?

Check out Dyscalculia.

I see it in the "Other WireGuard goodies" section.

Re:Traffic and Pollution Plummet as U.S. Cities Shut Down on Monday March 23, 2020 @02:57AM (#22661809)
Yup. ai2html seems to what I was looking for. Didn't spot that because of all the freebird comments.

As for freebird, my search led me to this. https://github.com/freebirdjs/freebird

Seems to be the NYT has an array of pollution sensor IOT across the cities and they are using Freebird to control them. Just my guess.

Re:Traffic and Pollution Plummet as U.S. Cities Shut Down on Sunday March 22, 2020 @01:26PM (#22656695)
Can someone please tell me what the name for the technology used to create the graphics is? The text for the place names over the image is highlightable.

I know you can handcraft these by having the text overlay over an exact X,Y on an image but that seems overblown for just these maps than having the text rastered into the image loaded.

So, is there some tool like an SVG creator that helps create these with the responsiveness and everything handled?

My search lead me to STUN and TURN server as this secret ingredient. I don't know what they mean though.

The Baby University series is pretty interesting.

The titles go like Bayesian Probability for Babies, Neural Networks for Babies and Rocket Science for Babies.

Re:Unicode Is Awesome on Tuesday December 03, 2019 @06:07AM (#21691433)
As a lay-developer, I know unicode is what you need for international character support. Oh, so what are the options: utf-8, utf-16, utf-32. I will choose utf-32 just because 32 > 16 or 8.

Also, it isn't difficult to imagine a future where people are criticized for correctly identifying deep fakes.
I didn't understand your scenario. Can you expand on that?

You have a reader for the web comic idea. Reply here when available.
For those curious about how this part looks, Boeing Pickle Fork graphic illustration:

https://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/625886-737ngs-have-crack...

Bugs:

Location: Achen, DE causes infinite loading.

Location: Anywhere in India gives Weather as passed and Wind speed as NaN km/hr.

Whoever developed Gizmodo frontend probably never read any article on it. That's some really bad image load animation. That solid 1 second delay hardcoded in CSS + network delay for lazy loading just leaves the whole article a white canvas while I scroll.

Why would you want to re-hide the image after I scroll out of it? Scrolling back up gives me that 1 second penalty to make the image visible. So frustrating.

Does anyone have any production experience for Yahoo Vespa? I've heard it competes with ES in opensource search.

Re:MITM on HTTPS traffic in Kazakhstan on Thursday July 18, 2019 @03:47PM (#20473296)
It was antivirus in my case. It has web scan feature that MITMs https sites locally. Disabling the feature made it "MITM unlikely".
