Re:Uncomfortable Truths in Software Engineering on Wednesday December 15, 2021 @09:28AM (#29566362)
I'm in my 40's and my graduating comp sci class was the biggest in history at that time because of the money people were making in the first dot com boom.
Wow, a study with a bit of work on mice and a small non-blinded study done on undergraduates at a university? What are the odds of this actually being an actual real effect? <1%?
LOL, this is literally covered in the article! Sharp was the source for this story! He was lying to try and cover his tracks! Krebs should probably take this story down.
Re:Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return on Thursday October 07, 2021 @10:47AM (#28786985)
This has always been pretty clear. But, also effective. Lots of congresspeople and MPs still read the NY Times, Guardian, etc.. Facebook also has no political 'country', being a big company (left wing hate) based in San Francisco with liberal views amongst its workers and ownerss. (right wing hate)
Re:Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite on Tuesday September 21, 2021 @03:11PM (#28608669)
Thanks for this, I like my Kindle but want to get library e-books onto there.
The Canadian Prairies are getting warmer and forecasted to have a longer/more productive growing seasons although a bad drought this year isn't encouraging.
Yeah, holy crap, if your alarm bells aren't ringing from the moment you start reading a paper like this by now I don't know what to tell you.
This is a point that's understated. Problems in the stock market hurt the real economy, problems in the crypto market hit an insular community of people who are trying to scam each other, much less of a societal issue.
Not true, Canada doesn't cover medications by default, you rely on employer-provided private plans for that.
This is also why I've become a bit more skeptical about Nuclear. Renewables + batteries are pretty mediocre right now but if I'm to bet on something for the next twenty years, it's that.
Reading this yesterday I was impressed a grocery chain managed to get a pure propo piece into the NY Times. Well done, H Mart PR.
The Ringers 'The Watch' podcast did a Lonesome Dove podcast read along last year if you are interested in having a virtual group to read along with.
Canada just added an explicit recognition of grazing land into our carbon tax program for just this reason. Not only are pastures incredibly better for native plant/animal conservation (in North America) than crop fields but native grasslands are also incredible carbon sinks:

https://www.canadiancattlemen.ca/news/forage-program-aims-to...

This is the reality of carbon taxes as implemented in some Western European countries and Canada. A generic tax that applies to a limited set of activities then a sector-by-sector specific plan for most large industries depending on a lot of factors.
Re:A man who stole a hotel on Tuesday April 27, 2021 @08:36AM (#26955032)
British Columbia has long been the scam capital of North America (well, maybe tied with Miami). It brings a tear to my eye to see it all grown up from the days of ripping off seniors for junior mining company shares on the old VSE to its current status as international money laundering hub for the entire Pacific Rim.
Re:Larry Page's Comeback (2014) on Saturday April 10, 2021 @07:34PM (#26766295)
That's what made it kind of an interesting read. All of the 'nicer Larry' projects in the article flopped, from Google+ to wearables to unsupervised learning being useful commercially.
Ottawa, Canada wasn't purpose-built but was an insignificant city meant to be a neutral choice of capital between Anglo and Francophone Canada. This has also worked fine.
Re:GameStop missed out on capitalizing on the Reddit rally on Thursday February 11, 2021 @11:24AM (#26103413)
Matt Levine at Bloomberg has been covering this issue extensively. His newsletter is a must-read.
Re:Canada to apply GST/HST to short-term rentals booked online on Wednesday December 02, 2020 @09:45AM (#25276742)
The bigger news from this budget update is that Netflix/Prime avoided a 'Cancon tax', where they would be forced to make more Canadian content for the services, funded by an added levy on consumers in the country. We dodged a bullet there, I certainly don't mind these changes.
Re:New variety of apple discovered by Wiltshire runner on Monday November 30, 2020 @01:51PM (#25257399)
This is also true for a huge number of apple species. Also,'cider apple' generally refers to apples that aren't that great for fresh eating but processing into pies/cider/juices. This is a pretty goofy story to make international news.
If you pre-destory the environment you are trying to save I'm not sure what you've accomplished. If climate change is envirionmental problem 1a) then habitat destruction is certainly 1b) and low-density renewable energy sources are a huge problem here as are riparian-destorying damns.
Yes, hydro is certainly a zero-carbon energy source but not without great environmental cost.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laTIbNVDQN8 is a good documentary about dam removals in the American west.

I signed up for Red a few weeks ago and cancelled my Spotify account. Ad-free videos, offline vides and a reasonable music service. I think it's a great deal.
Re:Airbnb S-1 on Tuesday November 17, 2020 @10:28AM (#25124838)
AirBnb is great, we've had almost nothing from great experiences if we are just trading anecdotes here.

They also did $3B+ in revenue last year so they are clearly very successful.

Re:The Black Hole Information Paradox Comes to an End on Sunday November 01, 2020 @06:33AM (#24958779)
Sean Carrol's Mindscape podcast does a pretty good job explaining things to where an average Hacker News reader would understand things. Highest recommendation. He had someone on recently talking about this paradox, the CFT-ADST correspondance and holographic theory and it was reasonably understandable.
