Re:Dropbox Secures $600M Credit Line Ahead of Expected IPO on Thursday March 30, 2017 @02:32PM (#13997759)
I love that they do one thing really, really well. Further:

"Dropbox is the fastest SaaS company to reach $1 billion in revenue run rate" - given that, I don't care if they are profitable or not. They got to $1B faster than Salesforce, as long as they keep this up they'll be just fine.

Rule when I was at Yahoo! "not on company time, not on company equipment" but you also may want to check that inventions agreement you signed when you started employment. Those tend to be pretty all-encompassing.
Re:The web sucks if you have a slow connection on Wednesday February 08, 2017 @03:59PM (#13602037)
Regardless of connection speed it also sucks if you try using LinkedIN's new website. Nothin' but progress bars.

Re:How an icebox saves our startup on Monday January 09, 2017 @07:26PM (#13361381)
Requires a bit of discipline to monthly "review the whole icebox and choose a month’s worth of activities from the best items in there" but is really the right way to go.

Similarly, in Agile if you're backlog is ranked going into planning then you'll always be pulling from the "best" or "most productive" stories and ideas, not just the new tickets.

Re:Ask HN: What are your personal top 2017 stock pics? on Sunday January 08, 2017 @06:11PM (#13352671)
I think the market will go up and to the right, just not in a straight line.

Not exactly a stock, but consider placing some of your portfolio in a bet on volatility. https://sixfigureinvesting.com/2010/01/how-to-go-long-on-the...

He's a creepy guy, and a total business jerk but I'm not sure what he did wrong in this case."How is this allowed @jack." ??? Do you mean, how can someone be allowed to create a collage and post them to social media? There are apps for that. And if you're a public figure you should expect this to happen to you, too.

Would she have complained if Channing Tatum or Aziz Ansari did it? And would twitter and Dorsey have cared?

A device for this exists already. Is he going to invest all that money in Durex or Trojan?
Re:Product Managers, What Is It You Do Again? on Wednesday August 24, 2016 @12:12PM (#12353061)
I figured HN was as good of a place as any to start this discussion and seed topics. What is it you think Product Managers do? What have you observed that you hate/love/try to ignore?
"on a Saturday IIRC, she responded to someone on d-r. This sent shockwaves throughout the upper echelons, and soon senior management were clamoring to get on d-r."

So, basically Marissa ruined devel-random, too? Nice. Is there anything Marissa can't do?

Fountain https://www.fountain.com/ is one of the more compelling uses of WebRTC I've seen. You can get help from experts on a variety of topics with audio, video, etc. https://www.fountain.com/experts this should give you plenty of ideas.

Thanks jerf, I have no idea why this made the front page. Clearly I have a lot to learn.
I apologize for being dense, but what data exactly is the OP crunching here?
Re:Show HN: Beautiful real-time dashboards with FnordMetric on Tuesday February 12, 2013 @04:47PM (#5209800)
Very pretty. I like how you can host it/hack it. I will definitely give it a try. We have a 70" I try and display real-time metrics on, and praise from customers, winning A/B tests, etc.

For a hosted alternative, I've been using https://www.leftronic.com/ for a project at work and have been really impressed with their built-in widgets and their support is A+. When I had trouble uploading spreadsheets of data they fixed me right up.

"This is a limited time offer, we're not Color or anything. But hopefully it'll whip Hacker News into a frenzy."

I see what you did there.

Re:Carol Bartz Out at Yahoo; CFO Interim CEO on Tuesday September 06, 2011 @09:00PM (#2967912)
Speaking from experience there, Yahoo! will do better without that kind of "leadership" up top. Let's break Yahoo! up into its valuable components, sell it and shed the rest.

I'll be buying Yahoo! stock in the morning.

Re:What you can buy with $8 billion on Tuesday February 08, 2011 @07:16PM (#2195561)
Hmmm, let me guess. For $8 Billion you can buy enough coke to keep Sean Parker from being portrayed in any major motion pictures for the rest of the century?

Re:BankSimple Launches Preview Site on Tuesday November 30, 2010 @11:47PM (#1956854)
Can you cite your source please? or a source? thanks.

For reference, the average American uses 16 different financial products, with about 2 products per bank. A good bank like Wells Fargo boasts a ratio of 5.5-6 products per customer. Your typical bank earns its money on an 80/20 split, where 80% comes from the interest spread (borrow at 3%, lend at 6%, net 3%) and 20% comes from fees (overdraft, interchange, fees for other products).

Re:Yahoo considering bid for Groupon for up to $2 billion on Sunday October 10, 2010 @11:42PM (#1778717)
If Groupon can really make $400 Million in sales this year at 50%+ margins on the deal then they could be worth quite a bit on the surface. However, with recent acquisitions and other costs, I would expect their expenses to be through the roof.

Problems:

-500 Employees is a lot of overhead. -Acquisitions are spendy, too, and add more overhead. -When businesses wise-up they are either going to have only Gap deals left or have to significantly lower their margins in order to drive real value to the merchant. Not every mom & pop business is going to fall for this "we sell it for $10 and give you nothing sales pitch."

I'm impressed with what Groupon has built, but the valuation seems inflated for a company that has so many vowels in its spelling.
