Re:They See Your Photos on Monday April 13, 2026 @10:58AM (#47752975)
By mistake I uploaded the same picture twice, and while all vague, the descriptions and ”data” were wildly different.

E.g. first time I was an extrovert, second time introvert… About the only thing that stayed the same was ”heterosexual”, but that’s a statistically safe guess.

So the waymo driver is dreaming, testing out different scenarios, basically…

Which you also do… if we’re really being honest about it.
Re:ICC ditches Microsoft 365 for openDesk on Thursday November 06, 2025 @03:21PM (#45839913)
So, reading the documentation in the [repo](https://gitlab.opencode.de/bmi/opendesk/deployment/opendesk/...) it’s immediately made clear that you should use the Enterprise Edition for production use. (Since the German state is behind this, why not focus on totally free software for production use?)

But what really surprised me are statements like this in the README:

” Nextcloud Enterprise: openDesk uses the Nextcloud Enterprise to the build Nextcloud container image for oD EE. The Nextcloud EE codebase might contain EE exclusive (longterm support) security patches, plus the Guard app, that is not publicly available, while it is AGPL-3.0 licensed.

And

COOL Controller container image and Helm chart: Source code and chart are using Mozilla Public License Version 2.0, but the source code is not public. It is provided to customers upon request. ”

This, according with other paragraphs describing percentages of free and non-free code in certain components really makes me wonder…

After seeing this example, I think this is the elevator pitch: ”We take your personal highlights and make them as generic and impersonal as possible.”
Like this? https://www.schweizerbauer.ch/markt-preise/marktmeldungen/la...

(Sorry, article is in german, it’s about laser-engraved fruits and vegetables. I’ve seen a few in the stores around here… (Switzerland))

It’s like when you think of something that will never exist, because it is just too absurd. However, this guy not only has an even more absurd idea, he also brings it into existence and shows why it’s a great idea to build a sustainable future!

Re:Mschf Plays Venmo on Tuesday June 25, 2024 @03:58PM (#40792886)
The art(?) collective MSCHF has come up with an interesting voting game, apparently based on an Athenian custom.

From the announcement:

——

In ancient Athenian ostracism, citizens would come together once a year and vote to banish one person from the city, on pain of death, for the next 10 years.

In MSCHF Plays Venmo, the sole winner of the "popular vote" wins the prize pool.

Those who receive the "ostracism vote" get banned from the game for life.

——

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2024) on Tuesday June 04, 2024 @09:37AM (#40574504)
Sounds really interesting! Just one question, do you hire non-us remote workers? (EU time zone)
> And try to not let my groin fall asleep.

I was "forced" into biking a few years ago (had an injury that prevented running) and had the same problem with the groin. I thought it was a natural thing with biking, but it can actually be quite bad for you in the long run, and it's very fixable! Sitting position and saddle makes a huge difference. Ofc position is the cheaper thing to fix, but saddle is easier.

Go to a bike shop and explain the problem and they'll help you find a saddle that fits you, don't go on with getting your groin numbed.

I can't get it to work via remote debugging on iOS. Neither on Safari on the Mac, I notice. Are there any feature flags I have to enable?

You know, shooting demons, solving mysteries, jumping over koopas, that kind of thing…
To me it seems that the author didn’t really understand Hinton’s argument. Nothing he’s arguing goes against it.
Re:Advent of Code 2023's new AI/LLM Policy on Monday October 16, 2023 @01:11PM (#37902967)
I’m sure you feel like you’re getting better by working with an AI, but make sure to test your skills without any AI help.

The ”illusion of competence” effect can be really strong, and it sneaks up on you without you noticing it.

Yay!

I’m just about to set up a couple of new domains, and was procrastinating because email. This looks perfect, something new to play with and get email set-up done at the same time :)

I wonder if it has 10gbe though, probably not. I want all my new computers/peripherals to support 10gbe, but it’s surprisingly hard (and expensive) to find.
Re:What AMD Learned from Its Big Chiplet Push on Wednesday June 28, 2023 @07:18AM (#36504867)
For me, the linked article from IBM research was a good read for some background on chiplets: https://research.ibm.com/blog/what-are-computer-chiplets
How about doing this _instead_ of paying out to the creators? When you sign up, you choose which charity should get the payouts for your created content? Maybe start with a searchable list of well-known charities, let users propose new as the site grows.

I think that might stem a lot of the potential abuse of the system to earn money, and it gives users a good feeling.

Re:Bing thinks Hitler was in Radiohead on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @01:27PM (#35978532)
Aha! So that’s where it comes from… So, if wikidata is where bing gets it’s facts about the world, that opens the door to lots of pranks. And edit wars :)
Re:Bing thinks Hitler was in Radiohead on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @01:19PM (#35978409)
It also doesn’t seem to matter how you ask the question, so it’s not just a small glitch. Deep down Bing really believes that Hitler is a member of radiohead. Is someone gaslighting bing to conclude this, or how could it start believing this? I’m sure there are very, very few web pages or other written material claiming that Hitler is a member of radiohead…
Re:The State of Serverless GPUs on Saturday April 29, 2023 @12:28PM (#35754405)
The ”Executive summary” isn’t, it’s an abstract.

There is zero actionable information there, it’s just describing the article. I was hoping to get a recommendation for which provider to use for which kinds of workloads. I guess I have to read it all then :/

> I am going to have to force her to consider the air bc the old 13 is a security risk without OS updates.

Have a look at Open Core Legacy Patcher (https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/), it’s great! My wife is using my old 2011 17” MBP as a desktop laptop, it works flawlessly on Ventura 13.3 :)

Congratulations! Soo good (even on an old iPhone)
Re:A Pixel Is Not a Little Square (1995) [pdf] on Thursday March 09, 2023 @02:12AM (#35078958)
If you want to read much, much, much more about this, read his book "A biographpy of the pixel".

Good, but very dense history of the development of computer graphics. And pixels.

Re:How much can you get out of a $4 VPS? on Monday February 06, 2023 @07:11AM (#34676235)
The article does not really answer the question in any meaningful way, just tests a CRUD blogging server written in go, using a mongodb database (both dockerized…)

If you expect any comprehensive benchmarks or testing, save the time.

Practice talking to strangers! It’s quite awkward at first, but it gets much easier with time. Just strike up a conversation with anyone you meet in the street. Ask questions, you’d be surprised how easy it is to get people to talk about themselves and through that get a conversation going.

Don’t know how much this plays into the long-term aspect, but I figure the easier it is for you to meet people, the easier it will be to meet someone who matches you.

Wow. For me the difference is night and day. On my phone, google gives me first two screenfuls of ads, then about the same amount of homepages of companies apparently selling mems sensors, and then some kind of wiki that seems to answer the question, maybe… Bing, otoh, has an explanation of what a mems sensor is and how it works as the first thing on the page. I guess I’ll try switching default search engine now. (For me, google results have definitely been getting way, way worse for a couple of years. At the moment, google search plainly _does not work_ for me probably 5-10% of the time, i.e. I _only_ get ads and unrelated results.)
