On the other hand every single time everyone is glazing over the unregulated gambling market created by Valve which is available to everyone regardless of their age and location. The whole empire is running on the Steamweb API and Valve could shut it down any single day if they want but they don't because... we know the answer.

Re:Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @04:56AM (#50324066)
As the joke says:

Japan in 1980 was 2000

Japan in 2000 was 2000

Japan in 2020 is 2000

Checked her Twitter account yesterday (managed by her husband)

She is MAGA. That's enought to know about the topic.

The media and seemingly random persons like this stanning her is extremely weird.

tbh maybe it's good and changes something quicker and on the long term that rich people experience it firsthand before the Maldives or Bangladesh

(probably nothing just me being optimistic but the rich always have a get out of jail card, like X more properties)

> Apted acknowledged flaws with the show, saying it was a "horrible error" to have only four women in a cast of 14 when making the original selection

I am more surprised they could only found 14 white kids even in 1964!

A show like this would be very different today.

Re:We built our house for LAN parties on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @09:13AM (#49609912)
I will never understand rich people. You won life, you live better than billions but somehow that’s not enough you have to boast about it. Even seemingly good folks like Gabe Newell is doing the same with his 360ft superyacht. As if they seek the validation because otherwise they know it’s all meaningless and empty.
That's the caveat of Proton. Running games on unsupported platforms they are not meant for. And if it doesn't work who's fault that? Valve? The dev? No one because it's open source so fix your own?

Honestly Valve should have a stricter warning if a game is Windows only

Re:GIMP Development Update on Monday August 17, 2026 @04:40AM (#49327945)
I’m going to take the bait:

I know a lot of people don't like that but sometimes I feel that FOSS projects are intentionally sabotaging themselves by ignoring industry standard options/conventions and instead they are following open source ideas just to be different. GIMP is the perfect example of that and generally speaking UI/UX is the main symptom.

Blender was able to move forward by not listening to the FOSS crowd but to the industry. And see where are they now compared to GIMP.

So McDonald's has a monopoly on the Big Mac? Because you can go to Burger King (Xbox) or KFC (Switch) or Sonic (PC) as well but this group is arguing they want to have a Big Mac but not from McDonald's? Or actually McDonald's doesn't have a monopoly because you can technically buy a Big Mac from Uber Eats or Doordash?
Re:Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition on Friday July 03, 2026 @07:39AM (#48773828)
Only Americans care about this. Most of us in the rest of world never even saw a real gun, let alone holding one in hand, and know intricate details like this.

>I feel like there has been a lot of unnecessary pushback about 'Thing in Japan' articles on the internet. Guess what, there are cool things everywhere; including Japan.

That's the point of the whole meme. People think it's interesting because of Japan not because of the content itself is interesting.

Did you know there are 12,000 Zabka stores in Poland and they are almost as ubiquitous as konbinis? Guess what, no gives a fuck because it's not Japan but an eastern European country https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BBabka_(convenience_store)

I wish they had a plan between free and 120€/year. I don't need 2TB storage but the free plan's 2GB is also nothing
My SO bought an Ioniq 6 mostly because of the buttons and the seperate control surface for AC and such but they test drived a BYD as well which was the same as a Tesla, just one huge tablet and endless menus
Re:I built Timeframe, our family e-paper dashboard on Sunday February 22, 2026 @04:25PM (#47114863)
It's a hobby but not for everyone. I mean if I could just throw away 3,000€ on random projects that might work or not I'd do it in a heartbeat. No different than buying a run down Porsche for 5,000€ and spending 40,000€ on restoration to original. Every hobby is like that but with different entry price points. There is a reason knitting is more popular than something like this (and even that has price tiers from 3€ for an acrylic yarn to upwards 100€ for luxury merino wool yarn)
Re:Office app has changed to copilot and now I can't open files on Saturday January 17, 2026 @05:00AM (#46656779)
Posting here is rage bait knowing the audience.

I’m not blaming the user but it’s single post from 15 days ago where one single user having problems opening their files. You _know why_ it is posted here

Re:Office app has changed to copilot and now I can't open files on Saturday January 17, 2026 @04:53AM (#46656749)
Peak rage bait for HN. [0] It has already more karma than the reddit post itself.

Not that I’m saying what’s happening is good but one single user having problems opening their files not sure warrant a post here unless your goal is the rage bait.

0, And just one more proof that HN is not that different from most social media sites.

Now all we need is a quick vibe coded web GUI front end
I'm sorry but why C#? Isn't the big tech (Microsoft) in this case is a very big downside?

Why not LÖVE (Lua) for example? https://love2d.org/

There is also libGDX (Java) but not sure Oracle is any better than Microsoft. https://libgdx.com/

First of all this the ground 0 for everything piracy (and more, generally free stuff) https://fmhy.net/

Here are the recommended film sites https://fmhy.net/video#torrent-sites

I generally download from https://rutracker.org/ (need an account to search not for downloading). They have pretty much everything that you can imagine (not just films) and in proper quality too (BD Remuxes etc). There will be no scene releases here because they add russian/ukrainian dubs and subs to almost all films but that's a small problem.

The other one is Heartive which lists torrents from the DHT network with Magnet links https://heartiveloves.pages.dev/ You just click on the torrent icon in the middle top of the selected film and all the available releases will be listed in plain text. The only downside that you need to be familiar with the release tags

Last but not least https://nyaa.si/ if you have a slight interest in anything japanese from manga to anime to much more

If you know how to use a CLI tool then you could also know how to download proper high quality releases without much effort. No private tracker and interview shenanigans. YTS is a bottom of the barrel quality. I actually don't even see who is the target audience of this unless you just made as an exercise to build an app on top of an API.

So more lootboxes and illegal underage gambling everywhere? Cool bring it on!

Also I'd imagine a Valve like Apple would only release a new phone or laptop every 5 years or so lol

Re:Valve is about to win the console generation on Thursday November 13, 2025 @04:10AM (#45912603)
If they want to capture the console audience its better be priced like one too and not prevent me from playing multiplayer games due to Linux and anti cheat software not playing nice

Anything above $600 is DOA and that's with accepting the fact that the most popular games will be not available on the platform

If you are american you'll probably never notice how off-putting is the american niceness. And it's not natural if you ever traveled and seen the world a little bit.

I'm curious what does it do that Libre Office can't do?

I always have this strong preconception about proprietary Mac apps. When a screenshot tool costs for example $30
