Mesen has texture packs. Don't know about sound, you'd have to reverse each game's sound driver first. https://vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Famicom/NES_Sound_Dri...

Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:33PM (#50253655)
Tried it. If I open it with a disc in, it shows the "No CDROM devices found" message. If I open it without a disc in, it shows the menu, then when I put in a disc in Windows shows a weird error: https://files.catbox.moe/6y3qpy.png

It acts generally weird (buy a £10 dvd drive from ebay and try it yourself if you want any more detail, useful thing to have anyway) and obviously I can't get it to play anything.

The RTM version gets a bit further, doesn't show that weird Explorer error, but I still can't get it to play anything and opening the playlist crashes it vs on the Beta version where it actually listed the tracks.

I suspect the cd player is trying to take control of the drive and fighting with Windows trying to be helpful, don't know if there's a way to turn it off.

Is it? Go look at ai written pull requests on any open source project, even using the fancy models. The code works but they write needlessly verbose comments above everything, don't follow the existing code style, and reinvent the wheel instead of checking if the source already has implementations for things.

What a shame, I feel like this is a curse most of the Chinese labs have. Every other model is pretty good and stands out, then the next one is just a clone of Claude that does better on benchmarks and can oneshot Minecraft 2 or whatever but is just worse to use.
Re:Show HN: PS2 games statically recompiled to WebAssembly on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:57PM (#50060211)
There are two types of generic PS2 to usb adapters, the one designed for pc (usually has two ports) and the one designed for PS3. The PS2 to PS3 controller adapters work perfectly with the right drivers (DSHidMini on Windows).

This is certainly not true. Where did you read this?

Project maintainers know what level of AI use is acceptable for themselves, and quantifying it and enforcing it for random contributors is very difficult.

There are also two SC-88Pro emulators coming v. soon. There is a MAME driver that will be in the next release https://github.com/mamedev/mame/pull/16080 (you can build it right now of course but I have no idea where you would find the roms) and also this: https://synthanatomy.com/2026/09/the-usual-suspects-88emu-a-...
Couldn't agree more. To add on I think you can learn so much by doing something incredibly stupid you're really not supposed to in an intentionally constrained environment (in a good way, like the grandparent comment). The sort of absurd things that get posted here occasionally and get a few commenters genuinely annoyed that they're doing that with their time instead of curing cancer. Plus it tends to be easier than it looks.

(I think some people have caught on to this and found out that Claude is pretty good at it.. not sure what the point of that is but whatever)

As long as AI is only able to create crap that people are embarrassed to admit they watch (which I think is likely IMO just given how it works) I think we'll be mostly fine. Trash TV didn't ruin the television industry and mobile shovelware didn't ruin the gaming industry.
Re:The safest job from AI may be writing on Monday August 31, 2026 @03:41PM (#49514033)
A lot of the replies are insisting AI will get better at writing with more development but I don't see it. Even if you have a mathematically perfect writing AI you still run into the same problems you would have if you handed off your writing task to someone on fiverr or something. It can't magically know what you want to say, it only has the information you gave it. A prompt complex enough where it won't get any wrong ideas has to contain as much information as the output would have.. so just write it.
Re:Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B on Thursday August 27, 2026 @03:22AM (#49461117)
Torrents aren't that scary. If you have the patience for local AI you can figure out qBitTorrent in less than an hour.
Re:Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B on Thursday August 27, 2026 @03:15AM (#49461039)
You are not the first or 100th person to come up with this idea. I don't really get it either but there must be a reason it hasn't really happened.
Does "don't write comments" not work?

If you have 90 minutes with nothing else to do I highly recommend giving the launch event with Jay Leno a watch.. it's really something unique. https://youtu.be/_JzfROUDsK0
Windows sucks but Linux is not a very good operating system either. Everything is a bodge to cover up the assumption that it thinks its a multi-user PDP11 system from the 70s, nobody can agree on which set of bodges to use for the same thing, and it's a miracle it even works at all. But it's better than the alternatives and nobody wants to try again so we got used to it. (That also applies to why Windows is used in corporate environments too)
I don't think I have enough money or room to buy all the books I think are worth saving, and my list no doubt has some overlap with someone else's. If I did buy them, what if someone else wants to read them? If I lose it or it gets destroyed in some way, the chance it will be gone forever increases (assuming there are multiple copies). Entrusting the availability of knowledge to individuals like that sounds like a bad idea. There could be some kind of publicly funded organisation that can take care of a big collection of books, afford to keep them safe, and make them accessible to anyone.
Whose job is it to dictate what is and isn't worth saving?

That's a separate issue from the wobbling
