What? You say that software with tests is more reliable, and then give an example of reliable software without tests.

Classic game theory: it's (supposedly) a net benefit for everyone to watch TV, but for any given person it's a net loss.

I wonder what a language with a three character Fibonacci sequence would be like. You'd probably need Unicode, if the language wasn't specifically designed for the Fibonacci sequence.

I don't care which language is popular, I want to know what makes a language popular. I try to choose languages orthogonally to popularity.

I like Lisp too, but there's nothing especially accurate about it's arithmetic that you can't get in other civilized languages.

Smalltalk would be trivial to model with s-exps: (object message args)
Re:Ask HN: Could a Lisp be Blub?

I think you need laziness to be a little more prevalent than that before it makes a difference. Haskell's super-concise Fibonacci sequence illustrates that:
let fib = 1 : 1 : zipWith (+) fib (tail fib)
Re:Ask HN: Could a Lisp be Blub?
on Sunday August 23, 2009 @11:05PM (#781425)
This question would be the length of a book if I had to define those words. Any hostility you detected was imagined. I was only pondering if a language in a certain style could be overly restrictive.
Ask HN: Could a Lisp be Blub?
Could a language with S-expressions, macros, first-class functions, and a REPL cater to average programmers and be despised by hackers? How could you cripple these things?

Just about the same thing for Python. It would probably be trivial to write another one like _why's with Rails, though

Re:Learn Icon
on Saturday August 22, 2009 @11:59PM (#780161)
Some of the biggest reasons to learn a new language are the features that you can take back to more domestic ones; almost nothing that makes Icon special (backtracking, generators, string scanning) can be used in other languages
