Re:In Memoriam: Noah Gibbs on Friday January 03, 2025 @06:18PM (#42590541)
I'm not in the Ruby community at all but the name seemed so familiar so I went digging. Noah worked with Skotos/DGD in the MUD community!

I remember reading his articles and seeing his name in the DGD community.

I tell myself the only reason they grow into these monstrosities is because they were successful projects but I know this is just a coping mechanism.
This has predominantly been my experience over the years. A great a PM is worth their weight in gold though!
The first complaint is about not being able to reach each other and being async. Async is not a requirement of remote work.

Have working hours. Have calendar invites. It's required to make use of in person collaboration so do the same.

This is pretty fun and a clever way to collect wild prompts and analytics about how well their AI safety suite is doing :)
I'd love to run a small music venue that doubles as an art/event space during the day.
What stand do you use?
Re:We updated our RSA SSH host key on Friday March 24, 2023 @04:28AM (#35286472)
I think it's bizarre they just casually use jq in their "automatic" fix commands. Is it really that ubiquitous?
Re:The age of cargo cult Agile must end on Tuesday February 21, 2023 @09:22PM (#34890751)
Instead of just bitching and moaning somebody senior on the team needs to aggressively push back with productive feedback and compromise. You can't just say stop all of the process. You are invalidating the Scrum Master/TPM's existent and will just meet fierce resistance.

Ask them to let you run the the standup the way you want to run it one day as an experiment. Ask them what metrics and reports are being shared so you understand why this is a hill they will die on. Ask them to participate as peers during the ceremonies so they understand where you're coming from.

Ask why and explain why.

Re:Slack is the opposite of organizational memory (2018) on Thursday January 26, 2023 @11:03PM (#34542304)
I've been pushing my org to open channel discussions using the thread feature and periodically will hear somebody say they found what they needed in an previous discussion. This is the way.
Re:What “Work” Looks Like on Tuesday October 25, 2022 @12:05PM (#33332444)
I empathize deeply with you. I have been dealing with a system of "infinite configurability" for the last couple years and it's playing out the same way. The best I've been able to do is slowly codify the most problematic corners and put guard rails as many places as possible.

Sometimes I want to put my hands up in defeat and leave but there is also a satisfaction and growth from simplifying the Rube Goldberg machine.

It still sucks though.

Re:Does AWS Lambda Oregon region having issues? on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @01:24PM (#32582701)
We started noticing issues around 10:03AM PT and are seeing a red "Internal server error" banner at the top of API Gateway dashboard. This is causing our API Gateway integrations to fail.
Adventure games are thriving. They may not be Twitch and YouTube headliners but there's still a huge audience.

A friend of mine is making a point & click adventure with Unity and has a playable demo on steam[1]. Unity and Steam (and their competitors) have truly made it possible for individuals and small teams to chase an idea to completion.

It sounds like you know this kind of business? What should the takeaway be for the rest of us that are not in the know?
Re:On anti-crypto toxicity on Wednesday April 20, 2022 @05:54AM (#31094627)
It's hard to have a charitable take on a huge majority of the cryptocurrency space when the web is drowning in all of the greedy bad actors that use the ideologies listed in this article as cover to push the grifts that inevitability harm my less technical friends and family.

I'd challenge you to square your statement that "it's not hard" with the fact that 65%+ of the US population is overweight.
Re:Files – Single-file photo gallery and file manager on Sunday February 06, 2022 @11:57AM (#30234282)
It doesn't mean they do all development in a single file.
This is my favorite low effort note taking. I've been doing this with email for a long time and for work I message myself in Slack.
We were in the middle of a large release and started seeing errors left and right. Totally appropriate :)
Re:What to expect after the eviction moratorium on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @03:47PM (#28133342)
This is reductive and the reality is the system typically fights hard against socialistic policy so we end up with half solutions like a moratorium instead of the government paying the rents on behalf of the tenants. Now you claim "Socialism. Bad." because of it.
> They almost never reflect on the time they’ve wasted or how they don’t really understand the goals or users for the software they are responsible for.

I think the quoted statement tends to be a systematic issue on struggling projects that describes the decision makers, regardless of role.

I'm not sure how anybody can expect other outcomes than a few lucky successes and a lot of failures when understanding why you are building something seems to be undervalued by management, technical or other.

Re:The rise of never-ending job interviews on Sunday August 01, 2021 @10:47PM (#28032381)
I had the same experience earlier in the year and ended up bailing out/declining offers because the process was giving me bad feelings about the work cultures at said companies.

I did actually tell one that the schedule of phone interviews (2) and video call rounds (4) was too much commitment without more details about the role and salary range. They responded with "if that's too much commitment the position is too".

Dodged that bullshit!

Re:Popular Elitism In Programming on Friday June 04, 2021 @11:31AM (#27394593)
It's a bit more specific but the Godot game engine is like this and it's a wonderful first time experience.

You download a single binary and end up with the scene graph editor, a gdscript editor, and all the other bells and whistles you need to immediately start.

Re:America’s Dead Souls on Thursday May 20, 2021 @02:21PM (#27225030)
Real life can be very dramatic and it doesn't make it less true to the people involved. Many people don't know to question the debtors, get overwhelmed, get bullied, and don't have the energy or resources to fight the onslaught of aggressive communications and serious looking mail they receive from these predators.
