My feeling is that only 30% of the outrage against Copilot is honest.

50% is anti-big-tech and 20% is our fear of being made redundant.

access management, and scalability: can better do simultaneous writes, and use several copies horizontally

BUT: you probably need 1k+ or 10k+ requests per second to start getting advantages

There is no way on earth there are enough remote positions for all those who want to work remote.

Yes, many new remote positions will be created, and it is a trend which will grow. But most will (have to) stay right where they are.

Re:How to Work Hard on Tuesday June 29, 2021 @05:08PM (#27681751)
The question you address is much more difficult to answer, if not impossible.

I read the article with the preface: Lets suppose workimg hard is desirable. How to do this?

This is the correct reading for me

Correct.

Thats why it may be a good idea to test higher risk populations or people with health issues.

It could make the ratio of absolute true positives to false positives 10x better

As I replied to a sibling comment, I never thought about firing Bob. I think we can assign responsibilities without being mean or denegrate someone.

I am critizing myself all the time for stuff. No hurt feelings there.

Re:Fastly Outage on Tuesday June 08, 2021 @05:47PM (#27441343)
I see: When I said we need to hold people accountable, you may have heard that we need to fire people. That was honestly never on my mind.

Maybe its a cultural thing. I hear a lot of firing at the US. I am from Europe.

Re:Fastly Outage on Tuesday June 08, 2021 @06:52AM (#27433317)
I disagree. People implemented those systems, so if you are correct that it is the systems fault, then it is also a persons fault.

People must be held accountable to have good incentives to reduce such outtages in the future.

I do agree though that we should always be compassionate and realistic with other humans.

YC never claimed to have a perfect selection process. I wouldn’t hold them accountable for the teams they pick based on a business plan and a 10 min discussion. Its just a good guess.

If they doubled down on the team after demo day, then I am with you.

Compare this with hiring. I have heard successful people say they do get 1 in 5 hires wrong, even after a process which is 10x more thorough.

also U-net is great at this stuff, and a bit easier to implement for my taste. there are many ready implementations over the internet
Theoretically you are right. I wouldnt give Fig access.

But the world moved on without us.

Lets be honest: For 99.9% of users, no misuse ever happens which they care about.

A good Macallan Whiskey, eg 18y for 350 usd.

I dont need more than 50 ml per session. I will have one per week, which means I have 15 weeks of pleasure with that one.

Re:Poor in Tech on Wednesday May 19, 2021 @07:34AM (#27207169)
i found that one weird

in my experience, there is no difference in how poor or rich people behave towards low-level staff.

in general, my feeling is the rich are more friendly, but it may be less genuine

Congrats on your work!
I think those daily numbers are very helpful, because they show the relative change in infections.

And thats a helpful (if not the only one) indicator on whether there will be enough ICU beds one month from now. If not, we should consider lockdowning.

Re:Writing books is not really a good idea on Monday May 10, 2021 @04:16PM (#27110373)
imho, for most, the biggest advantage of writing a book is to upsell consulting after that.

together with that, it is a great learning opportunity for the author.

all in all: not for me

Maybe they say this to incentivize subscribers to continue paying

Meanwhile, it will work always anyway. Thats how I would build it

thank you!

Ask HN: Why Amazon EC2 Instead of AWS EC2?

I often wonder what the thought is behind branding AWS services with Amazon instead of AWS.Does anyone have an explanation? In my mind, there is no additional perceived value for customers, in both directions. Eg I dont think I love EC2 more if it is prepended with Amazon…

omg, brace for BS marketers start putting fake cost numbers on their products to boost sales..
imho this post is pretty much going for what you want! :)
I dont understand the OP and others who feel it is soul crushing to do stupid tasks.

For one, whats the big deal? I can put in the difficult hours and continue. Secondly, often, what is considered inefficient and stupid is not, or just cant be done better because organizations are not perfect.

Having said that, OP, I have lots of respect for your strength to go for what you want.

Re:Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job? on Friday April 16, 2021 @06:15AM (#26831959)
One optimisation: dont write into your resume that you had many jobs and stopped. Similar for college. Eg only mention IBM and fill the rest with “freelancer” or “educational projects”.

The details depend on your specific resume and dates, though.

Re:A top-grossing scam on the App Store on Tuesday April 13, 2021 @05:26PM (#26799543)
When I was doing iOS apps around 2016, there was a simple way to request a refund if you purchased sth by mistake. I think it was a web form using your Apple id. The amount was autocredited back to you immediately.

Not sure if this was the norm back then, and if it is now.

Many comments say it cant be done, but this is disingenious. As if we were bureaucrats with no imagination:

Eg just have 2 caps: First cap triggers a red alarm prohibiting provisioning, or storing, of new data. The second one (when you are like 50% above the first cap) is dark red, closing down everything except storage.

Sure, decisions have to be made for every single service, but you don’t need a perfect solution if it is optional.

Eg, you could start ONLY with EC2 and will have fixed 50% of the problem.

I guess the feedback to switch roles is accompanied with reasons. Would be very weird to say the former and then hang up
Re:Ask HN: Cheapest/easiest way to host a static site? on Saturday March 27, 2021 @07:24AM (#26601511)
strikingly.com is also nice for simple websites which you build with their editor; however not flexible to do custom things or uploads

Hetzner Cloud gives you a full VM for 3 USD/month. I have hosted a game there with thousands of daily users.
To add one more critic: A couple minutes into the text, I still didnt read something of substance/consequence.

Lots of hand waiving and describing the usual phenomena in other terms.

I will follow this thread hoping someone points out that good stuff is coming later in the text, but I doubt it.
