Re:Google Instant Search Released on Thursday September 09, 2010 @12:07AM (#1674381)
Anyone else find the constantly refreshing search results annoying? If so, do you know of any cognitive psychology literature to explain why? I personally find this instant search infuriating and just want my standard old Google search back, where things do NOT change unless I'm mentally prepared for them to change.
Re:Ask HN: How to handwrite faster? To get into Stanford. on Saturday September 04, 2010 @03:53PM (#1663278)
I'm missing something important. How does this relate to Stanford?

Ask HN: Morality Question: What kind of programmer are you?

I have been struggling with a modification of: Guy: “If I gave you a million dollars, would you sleep with me?” Girl: “A million dollars is a lot of money, and you don’t look that bad, so I guess I would consider it” Guy: “Ok, since I don’t have a million dollars, would you sleep with me for $100?” Girl: (outraged) “What kind of girl do you think I am?” Guy: “We’ve already...

Re:Ballmer: An iPad Killer is Job One on Saturday July 31, 2010 @05:46AM (#1563502)
Anyone else ironically hoping MS creates a better iPad just for the opportunity to install Linux on it?
Didn't Tesla claim to have developed wireless power a long time ago. Those more familiar with Tesla/Physics ... is this the same technology?
Re:Machine learning revolutionizes software development on Sunday July 04, 2010 @05:25PM (#1486410)
How is this better than JITting?

It seems like most recent performance gains come from runtime/dynamic optimizations, not static/compile time optimizations.

on second thought, my comment makes little sense,

if they wanted noisy sleep, it should be something like

sleep(func(rand()))

is sleep(1) noisy?

if so, it might be vs timing attacks

Re:3D pictures without glasses on Wednesday June 16, 2010 @05:00AM (#1435069)
This looks pretty cool.

However, if it's actually useful, why wasn't it invented layer as part of OpenGL / taught in standard graphics courses?

Given that OpenGL already has the 3D model, and has to redraw everything 30 or 60fps anyway, there's no performance hit to slightly change the camera angle.

What are the limitations / side effects of this technique that cause it to not be used in practice?

How to start a Y Combinator?

Subtitled: How to surround yourself with smart people outside of academia? To me, the greatest advantage of being a CS professor, is being surrounded by lots of smart, motivated colleagues & students. The greatest disadvantage -- is that much of research appears to be about doing "new" rather than "useful" things, and funding is governed by NSF/DARPA rather than market demands.YCombinator...

Yeah ... but what type of real world data is sparse?
Re:Compressive Imaging: A New Single-Pixel Camera on Thursday March 18, 2010 @11:53PM (#1203331)
Besides MRI research, has any useful applications come out of this?
Why is 48 laws of power BS? There are rules in the book that contradict each other, but it provides a framework for recognizing patterns of human behavior and analyzing it.

Ask HN: Books on human nature that changed your interactions

After reading 48 Laws of Power, I started seeing interactions between 1) others & myself, 2) others & others in a completely different light. There were these mental "hooks" I could analyze human interactions through.Neil Strauss's "Rules of the Game" did something similar.I'm currently reading Robin Baker's "Sperm Wars" and it's again showing me human interactions through a new...

GPUS: nVidia/ATI have amazing toolchains, especially CUDA.

FPGAS: we have amazingly bad toolchains

Ask HN: Anonymously register a C Corporation?

I want to register a C corporation. However, I don't want it to link directly back to me (this is not for tax dodging; I will happily pay my taxes). I just want my involvement with the startup to remain anonymous until I succeed [no need to broadcast my failures to the world.]Is there anyway to setup this up?
